FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Thank you to the many families who came along and celebrated the Mass together last Saturday evening at our Children’s Mass. It was great to see so many students join in with the parishioners in a wonderful start to the term.

This Monday, 25th April marks our ANZAC Day celebrations; a day when we remember the men and women who, bravely, fought and died to protect our nation. As a tribute, the students and staff of St. Joseph’s always march proudly during the Rockhampton ANZAC Day March. The march will commence at promptly at 9.57am and as such any students who will be participating as part of the school group are required to meet in Alma St at 9.15am. Due to riverfront works, this route this year has been altered and I would encourage you to review the material already sent home this week. We would love to have as many of our students as possible come along and participate.

Students are to be dressed in full school uniform, including hat.

This Friday at 11.40am, we will be holding an ANZAC liturgy in the Multi-Purpose area. This will be led by Year 6Br and all community members are welcome to come along to the ceremony. As usual, we are privileged to be joined by the 227 Squadron Air Force cadets who will provide a guard of honour.

As we reflect on the meaning and symbolism surrounding the ANZACs, the significance of John’s gospel comes to light:

“Greater love has no one than this,
that one lay down his life for his friends.”

John 15:13

As I mentioned last week, I will be on leave this term in Weeks 3, 4 & 5. During this time our APRE, Bernard Fitzgerald, will be Acting Principal in my place. Please feel free to address any concerns you may have with Bernard.

Don’t Forget….

  • Wed 20/4 - School Board Meeting;
  • Mon 25/4 - ANZAC Day March;
  • Thu 28/4 - Visit by Diocesan Directors;
    - Rockhampton Cross Country.

Have a great week.
Alan

APRE REFLECTION

A CHILD’S ANZAC DAY PRAYER

Today I pray for all soldiers, sailors, air pilots,
doctors, nurses, and ambulance drivers
who have died in wars.
In a special way,
I pray for the souls of the brave men and women
from Australia and New Zealand,
who died at Gallipoli many years ago.
I pray for all men and women
who travelled far from their country,
so that the world could be a more peaceful place.
Please, God, give their souls rest.
Reward them for their bravery and sacrifice.
Give them eternal peace.

Amen

LEST WE FORGET.

I hope to see you at next Monday’s ANZAC March.

Have a great week.

Regards
Bernard Fitzgerald

We will be having a Anzac Day Prayer Assembly this Friday (22nd of April) at 11:40am in the Multi-Purpose Area. All are very welcome.

Children’s Mass

Thanks to all staff, students and parents who came and celebrated mass last Saturday evening. As Fr. Frank mentioned during the homily, with the story of the Good Shepherd as the Gospel, God loves each of us and it was terrific to see the little lambs of his flock in attendance. A special thank-you to all the students who read on the night as they did a wonderful job.

Our next Children’s mass will be held on Saturday the 21st of May for those wanting to save the date in their calendar.

Bernard Fitzgerald

DANIEL MORCOMBE CHILD SAFETY CURRICULUM

Week 2

Prep – Year 2

Students will:

  • Understand the meaning of persistence
  • Understand the need for persistence
  • Identify a group of safety helpers they can report to

Years 3 – 6

Students will:

  • Identify that planning ahead can help them stay safe
  • Plan avoidance or exit strategies that can be used to keep themselves safe

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of Accuracy.

Strategy – Using beginning and ending sounds

Spelling:

When reading a word, students should be using the sounds at the beginning of the word as well as at the end of the word. Often children will look at the beginning letter or letters and guess a word that may fit in the sentence without looking at the rest of the word. They may not even know there is an end to a word. It is important that children slow down enough to be able to look at the whole word before making a guess. They would then cross check the word to make sure it makes sense with the pictures and the rest of the sentence.

Strategy: Hidden Words

Draw a picture and write your spelling words in the picture. Try to hide the words.

Deanne Senini

CLASSROOM NEWS

3T

Term 3 in 3T

This term we will be ‘Exploring Places’ in Geography by examining similarities and differences between places within and outside Australia. The concept of place is developed through examining the major natural and human characteristics of Australia, the Countries/Places of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and Australia’s neighboring countries. Our focus for Religion is ‘I wonder about prayer and praying. I wonder about the Rosary’. We will be exploring our understanding of the earth’s movements in our ‘Night and Day’ Science unit. In Art we have been comparing contemporary and traditional art pieces and creating our own aboriginal stencil art.

Tyler and Breanna generating graphs on the Ipads.

Jackson and Nicholas

We will be very busy with our Mathematics and English content this term and it will be the first time for us to participate in The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). Students are expected to participate in tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. This will take place in Week Five.

We are looking forward to a busy term.

VOLUNTEERS INDUCTION SESSIONS

WPH&S Volunteers Inductions are necessary for the safety of your children. Therefore we ask that all parents who generously volunteer their time to the school, either in a classroom or in the tuckshop, attend a very brief induction regarding maintaining a safe environment for the children of St. Joseph’s.

These sessions only take about five minutes and are available after assembly on a Monday morning with Deanne Senini, or with Ray Carrington on Friday mornings at 9.00 am. Tracy Wren will also be conducting induction sessions in the tuckshop, if you are helping out in there.

Thanks,
Ray Carrington

NATIONAL DISABILITY INSURANCE SCHEME

Do you know of someone who has a diagnosed disability? If the answer is YES then PLEASE READ THIS….

The NDIS supports people with a permanent and significant disability that affects their ability to take part in everyday activities. This scheme is currently being trialled in Queensland.

The scheme is designed to identify supports to help individuals

  • Live their life as independently as possible.
  • Achieve goals in education, employment, health and wellbeing.

It also focuses on early intervention where getting early supports can reduce the impact of disability on you or your child. PLEASE READ the attached flyer and attend this session if you are able. Other information and sessions are happening regularly and if you are unsure about whether or not you should attend or have any questions in general please ask and I can point you in the right direction.

Thanks,
Kath Howell (Learning Support Coordinator)

SCHOOL COUNCILLOR

Building Resilience

Giving children opportunities to learn new skills.

Provide encouragement to attempt difficult tasks, and respond positively to your child's mistakes. This teaches your child how to handle challenges better next time. For example, 'That's okay. Let's work out what to do if it happens again.'

As children get older give them responsibility for doing things for themselves, eg work out how to spend pocket money, prepare a meal, shop for themselves (within reason). Be prepared for them not to do it the way you would – and for them to make mistakes.

Protect your child from adult problems

If you're having troubles with your child's other parent make an effort to keep your child out of adult business. Help your child to see it is not their fault (children often believe it is). You might want to find another caring adult such as a grandparent to support them while you are feeling very stressed.

Find outside support for your child

Children often do better when life gets difficult if they have some support from people apart from their parents. It could be a grandparent, relative, family friend or teacher. As children get older their own close friends can provide some of this support.

Get support for yourself

Sometimes things go wrong between parents and children. Parents and babies can have a tough start to life for all sorts of reasons. It is important to try to get things sorted out whatever your child's age. This may mean you need to get support from a professional who has special skills in this area. The effort put in early will pay off in the long run.
