FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

St Joseph’s Learning Spaces

We often have people ask us how our rooms operate and why we do what we do. Over the term, I will share with you the reasons why we love our teaching and learning spaces and philosophy.

Reason Number One: Small group workshops allowing for target teaching according to need.
Reason Number Two: Our rooms enable students to move regularly.
Reason Number Three: Our learning spaces enable regular collaboration opportunities.
Reason Number Four: Our learning spaces help build positive relationships.
Reason Number Five: Increased level of engagement
Reason Number Six: Teacher Expertise. Our rooms allow for teachers to take control of the subjects they are most knowledgeable and passionate about. A knowledgeable and passionate teacher will enhance the learning opportunities and engagement of students.

St Joseph Feast Day / Grandparents Morning Tea

Last Friday we celebrated the Feast Day of St Joseph with a whole school mass followed by morning tea with Grandparents and the drawing of our Easter raffle. Thank you to Mrs Carter for organising such an uplifting mass, the P&F volunteers for sorting all the food donations, families for the generous donations of food for morning tea and the year 6 students and teachers for helping on the day. It was a truly wonderful occasion.

Congratulations to the Year 3 and 5 students who completed their NAPLAN assessments last week. This week we will catch up as many students who were absent as possible. I look forward to seeing the results.

Jesus Heals a Blind Man

John 9:1-41

Gospel Focus – None so blind

There’s a very old saying that has its roots in the Bible but is not a direct quote from the Bible: ‘There are none so blind as those who will not see.’ It would be a fitting summary of today’s passage for there are two movements between darkness and light that are evident in the story. Firstly, there is the blind man who can see. He can see physically but can also see the truth of who Jesus is. Secondly, there are the Jewish authorities who have physical sight but are completely blind to the truth of Jesus.

Project Compassion Fundraisers; Meal Deal & Line of Coins

Next Thursday, March 30, to finalise our fundraising for Caritas’ Project Compassion Appeal we will be offering a Meal Deal through the tuckshop. This will be added to QuickCliq and orders will need to be placed by Tuesday morning. The usual tuckshop menu will not be available on this day.

Also on March 30, each class will be challenged with making a line of coins. This will be a competition to see which class has the longest line of coins! As we undertake these fundraisers we will be continuing to highlight the important role Caritas plays to empower communities in Australia and beyond.

End of Term Prayer Celebration

Also on March 30, we will share a Prayer Celebration to conclude our term. This will be presented by the Junior Joeys Student Group and will be centred around the journey of Jesus on Good Friday. All community members are welcome to join us at this celebration.

CURRICULUM NEWS

PARENT-TEACHER INTERVIEWS

Parent-Teacher Interviews will be held in Week 2 of Term 2 (24-28 April, not ANZAC Day). All families are encouraged to book an interview to discuss their child’s progress. These interviews are a welcome opportunity for face-to-face meetings that may not yet have been had this year. Bookings can be made through Parent Lounge, and bookings will be open to parents/carers over the school holidays. If you have trouble accessing your Parent Lounge account, please see Tracey or Megan in the office; they will gladly assist you.

NAPLAN

With determination and perseverance, our Year 3 and Year 5 students successfully sat for NAPLAN last week. The results of this assessment will be returned later in the school year.

VOLUNTEERS

In 2023, we look forward to welcoming volunteers back to school. There are various ways you can volunteer at Joey's. If you’d like to volunteer in the tuckshop, please get in touch with the office or catch up with our tuckshop convenor – Mrs Debbie Rooney. If you’d like to volunteer in your child’s classroom or perhaps another classroom, please approach the class teacher to see what activities are available to assist with.

Before beginning your volunteering, you must complete a volunteer induction; this will happen in the office before you start. Even if you have completed an induction before, the induction must be done every year. If you are a grandparent or community member, please pop into the office and see Tracey or Megan to collect a Volunteer Blue Card Application. For this process, you will require a copy of your driver licence certified by a JP or someone similar.

We look forward to welcoming many volunteers to Joey's this year.

MEDICAL DETAILS

Please ensure your child/ren’s medical details are up to date. To check this information, log on to parent lounge and check the medical tab. Please update if necessary. If your child has a medical action plan, please ensure it is current. If it is due for renewal, please drop a copy of the updated plan to the office or upload it to the medical section for your child in Parent Lounge. The school needs to have updated medical details on file. Your cooperation with this request is appreciated.

LIVING LAUDATO SI

“Our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us.”

Eco-Warrior Student Club

Our Eco-Warrior Student Club is revolved around the messages and teachings within Pope Francis’ encyclical letter, Laudato Si’. Our first week of student clubs involved us all learning about Laudato Si’ and how we can Care for Our Common Home.

In our second week, we learnt about gardening. We then used this knowledge and planted our very own flower and vegetable seedlings in raised garden beds. Lots of hands-on learning and of course fun was had.
