FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents & Guardians

A reminder that the P&F AGM will be held this evening in the school library. All are welcome to attend. Details of the P&F Executive positions that will be finalised tonight will be published in the newsletter next week.

As mentioned last week, please return the pink ‘Confirmation of Enrolment 2023’ and yellow ‘Updated Contacts’ forms that were sent home recently.

These forms are most important for our future planning and keeping our parent contacts up to date.

Nominations for our school swimming carnival were sent home last Friday. Please return these nomination forms as soon as possible as we prepare for the carnival next week.

Preparations are underway for our annual Presentation Night that will be held on the Thursday evening of the second last week of school (24th November). Your child’s teachers will let you know if there is any specific dress theme needed for their performance. On this night we will be presenting our major yearly awards as well as having festive themed performances from Kindy all the way through to Year 6. This is always one of the biggest nights on the Joey’s calendar.

A reminder that we are collecting items for our Christmas Hampers to help with Vinnies Christmas Appeal. We are aiming for an item a week per student during this time. If you can, please remember this when doing your weekly shopping.

We will be holding a special Remembrance Day assembly this Friday as we pay our respects to those who fought in the many conflicts around the world to protect the freedoms that we enjoy today. LEST WE FORGET.

RELIGIOUS MATTERS

32nd Sunday Ordinary Time

The Sadducees try to put Jesus in conflict with Moses.

Luke 20:27-38

Gospel Focus – I am who am

The Sadducees quote the Law of Moses at Jesus, but he goes one better by quoting the very conversation when Moses encountered God in the burning bush. In this encounter, God reveals Godself to be the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. God does not say, I was the God of Abraham, but rather I am the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. This distinction confirms that the relationship is ongoing, not stuck in a time before their death. It is in this same encounter that God reveals God’s name as ‘I am who am’ – represented in Hebrew by the letters YHWH from which we get Yahweh.

CURRICULUM NEWS

2023 Booklists

Booklists for next year were sent home with students earlier this week. They are also available on the skoolbag app if you need to print one off between now and next year. You will hopefully notice that the quantity of items for parents to purchase has again decreased thanks to the generous support of our P&F. Their contribution to the booklists has enabled many items to be removed from each list, therefore, saving a considerable amount of money for every parent. A huge thank you to the P&F for everything they do to support the school.

Semester Two Reports

Students are busily finishing off assessments so teachers can begin preparing the Semester Two reports. These will be available to parents on Wednesday, 30th November through Parent Lounge. Please remember that Parent Lounge is the only way you can access your child’s report, so please ensure you are able to log in before then. If you need assistance, please contact the office so new log in details can be set up if required. Please encourage your children to work hard over the next couple of weeks and show their teachers what they can do in all assessment areas.

ICAS Results

Congratulations to Tom Compagnoni who received a participation certificate in ICAS Writing and Elizabeth Compagnoni who achieved a Merit.

Medication Collection

Please be aware that all medication which is kept at school needs to be collected at the end of the school year. Any medication not collected will be disposed of as per Diocesan policy.

CLASSROOM NEWS

Yr 1

We’ve been very busy in Year 1 and can’t believe how quickly this term is passing us by.

This term, we’ve been learning about natural, managed and constructed features of place and how we can care for our environment. We all ventured to Emu Park in week 3 to extend and consolidate our learnings and have some fun. Students arrived by bus and explored Fisherman’s Beach. We then took a walk up to the Singing Ship and along the Anzac Memorial Walk, stopping to capture photos along the way to complete a group scavenger hunt. We finished the day with lunch and ice blocks at the park, before boarding the bus to return to school.

The very next day, Year 1 spent the day in Year 6 whilst the Preps spent the day in Year 1. The students were full of excitement at the end of the day, and thoroughly enjoyed spending time in Year 6.

In Religion we’ve been learning about the sacrament of Baptism and how we can care for creation. We’re also busy preparing for our final prayer celebration in Week 7.

Class favourites:

Millie: I’ve loved learning new things and being creative with my writing.
Reuben: I’ve enjoyed our Morning Circle. I like sharing ‘What Went Well’ for me each morning.
Ella & Olive: We’ve loved writing procedures for how to make fairy bread and bead snakes.
Declan: I liked learning about natural, managed and constructed things on our excursion. This bus ride was also heaps of fun!
Olivia: I’ve enjoyed technology lessons and learning how to use all the tools on Seesaw.
Ryan: I’ve enjoyed PMP. I like jumping on the trampoline and throwing the balls into the bucket.

From Year 1

Congratulations to the following students and staff who will celebrate their birthday this week. They are: Hunter Arnold (Yr 4), Jack Mahoney (Yr 2), Willow Beal (Yr 1), Declan Roati (Yr 1), Isla Stevenson (Prep), Maisie Duncan (Yr 2), Izabella McGilvray (Yr 1), Trinity Jones (Yr 6) and Cooper Pettett (Yr 4).

Have a great day.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC in 2023

Enrolments are now being accepted for new and continuing students to learn the following instruments at St. Joseph’s Park Avenue.

FLUTE, CLARINET, SAXOPHONE, TRUMPET, TROMBONE, PERCUSSION, VIOLIN, VIOLA, CELLO, GUITAR & VOICE.

Instrumental Music provides so many benefits to a child – please watch the attached link to a fantastic video about Music and the Brain: Instrumental Music Learning and Brain Fireworks

Please see the attached information letter for details on required year levels for each instrument, and a downloaded version of the enrolment form.

Enrolment is available online at the link below:

KEYBOARD LESSONS

Leanne Voss will continue to offer Keyboard lessons in 2023 for interested students in grades 1 – 6.

Lessons are of 30-minute duration and will be conducted weekly at school.

Students will be required to have access to a keyboard for practice and purchase a music tutor book and theory book. Lessons will generally be given to groups of 2 or 3 students with some individual lessons available when it is not possible to match students of similar musical ability. The lessons will focus on using a chord bass with an emphasis on utilising keyboard features such as different tones and rhythms.

Playing keyboard is an excellent extra curriculum activity to develop not only musical skills, but creative thinking, hand-eye coordination, concentration and commitment to task.

Enrolment forms are available from the office and in the newsletter for both new and continuing students.

UNIFORM SHOP

Our Uniform Shop is open Friday Mornings from 8:00 – 8:45am. The Joeys and Friends Facebook page will still have what is available for sale.
