APRE REFLECTION

We are proud of our new school and look forward to the adventures that each new week brings. You may have noticed the sprinklers working constantly on the new oval turf to ensure the root system develops and we have successful growth and retention. The watering has now been scaled back and we will reassess this Friday if/when the children will be able to begin playing on the oval.

I must commend the students on their patience during this period of restricted play areas. They have been very tolerant of their peers and shown great generosity in sharing play spaces. It really is amazing how adaptable the children have been to the constant changes that have occurred throughout the project.

This Lent, we will join with millions of Australians who want to end poverty and injustice in our world. Every year, countless people turn Lent into a demonstration of faith, love and generosity. You can be a part of this incredible community, who believe that there are simple actions we can all take to “be more” for our world.

Make a donation to Project Compassion or give something up for Lent… there are many ways to put your compassion into action. Whatever you choose to do, you’ll be contributing towards a more just and compassionate world.

“Aspire not to have more, but to be more.” – Saint Oscar Romero

Upcoming Events:

  • Season A sport commences - Friday 26th February
  • Year 12 Indigenous Commencement Mass - Friday 26th February
  • St Joseph’s Feast Day Mass – 9:00 am – Friday 19th March
  • National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence - Friday 19th March

First Week of Lent

We begin our annual Lenten Project Compassion journey by learning about the story of Jamila and her family. Jamila, 22, is a Rohingya woman, living in the world’s largest refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. A single mother, she fled armed conflict in Myanmar to save herself, her elderly mother and eight-month-old baby.

With the support of Caritas Australia, through Caritas Bangladesh, Jamila was able to access emergency food and shelter. She also received counselling, emotional support and learnt sewing skills, to help her earn an income. Jamila now feels less alone, with a sense of community around her. She is able to ‘Be More’ to her little family.

Watch a short film about Jamila’s story here.

NDA

The National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence is an important day in our school calendar to join with other schools across Australia to say, “Bullying. No way!”

We're joining the nationwide movement with schools across Australia to take action together against bullying on Friday 19 March 2021.

We're proud to be an NDA school. We're proud to say “Bullying! No way!”

At our school we encourage students to take hold of the issue and talk about what works. Let's support our students to drive powerful messages and take action to prevent bullying.

On Friday 19 March 2021 we will wear our “BE KIND” T shirts.

Students were invited earlier this week to bring a clean, blank T-Shirt to school. Classes will be stencilling “Be Kind” messages on the shirts. These can then be worn on NDA and other kindness days throughout the year.

CURRICULUM NEWS

ST JOSEPH’S TEACHING AND LEARNING FRAMEWORK

Throughout 2019, the staff assisted me to develop a teaching and learning framework for our school. It has since been endorsed by the Rockhampton Catholic Education Office and is currently being implemented across our school. Each week throughout this year I would like to share a section of this framework with the school community so that everyone is aware of what teaching and learning looks like at our school.

This week will provide you with an overview of the components of the Framework.

Our Teaching and Learning Framework consists of 3 parts:

  1. School Vision and Mission
  2. School Curriculum Guide
  3. Schoolwide Pedagogical Model

Part 1 of the Framework outlines the key messages of the school’s Vision statement and Mission Statement (the why we do what we do).

Part 2 of the Framework is designed to guide and inform staff of the whole school curriculum processes and procedures used to inform teaching and learning practices (what we do).

Part 3 of the Framework clearly outlines the teaching and learning approaches of our school (how we do it).

VOLUNTEERS

In 2021 volunteers are welcome back at school. There are many different ways you can volunteer here at Joeys. If you’d like to volunteer in the tuckshop, please either contact the office or catch up with our tuckshop convenor – Mrs Debbie Rooney. If you’d like to volunteer in your child’s classroom or perhaps another classroom, please approach the class teacher to see what activities are available to assist with.

Before beginning your volunteering, you need to complete a volunteer induction session with myself. These are offered on Monday mornings straight after assembly in the stage area and Friday afternoons at 2:30pm in the office. If these times don’t suit you, please contact me through the office or via email: deanne_senini@rok.catholic.edu.au to arrange another time. Even if you have completed an induction with me before, the induction must be done every year.

To keep everyone safe, please follow the following safety requirements:

  • do not volunteer if you are unwell
  • sanitise your hands using the supplied hand sanitisers in each classroom or the tuckshop before and after volunteering
  • maintain social distancing from any other adults

I look forward to welcoming many volunteers to Joeys this year.

MEDICAL DETAILS

With the start of a new school year, please ensure your child/ren’s medical details are up to date. To check this information, log on to parent lounge and check the medical tab. Please update if necessary. If your child has a medical action plan, please make sure it is current. If it is due for renewal, please drop a copy of the updated plan to the office or upload it to the medical section for your child in parent lounge. It is essential for the school to have updated medical details on file. Your cooperation with this request is appreciated. If you have any questions regarding this process, please come and see me or email me at: deanne_senini@rok.catholic.edu.au.

Regards,

Wow! Half a term has gone by and boy have we been working hard now that we are in year 1.

We have adjusted well to the expectations of Year 1 in our independence, responsibility for our learning and behaviour.

Some things we’ve loved so far in year 1 are our investigative learning opportunities, English and Maths workshops and use of the iPad to show our understanding.
