FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Well done to our Semester 2 Academic Award winners last Monday morning. It was fantastic to see over 170 awards being handed out. Many students came very close to fulfilling the set criteria for the awards, but just missed out. Next year, I hope for continued growth and that all of our ongoing students continue to persevere and be determined in striving toward their Individual Academic Goals in reading, writing and numeracy in 2020.

A reminder that Semester 2 reports were posted to Parent Lounge yesterday, Tuesday 3rd December.

It was fantastic to see so many of our Joeys community gather together for last week’s Presentation Night. Many thanks to everyone who came along to support our students and help make it such a memorable evening. A special thank-you to Tim Harkin who worked tirelessly to ensure the court was well-lit and clean for the evening. Congratulations to the worthy recipients of this year’s awards and also to all of the students who performed on the night. Many thanks also to the staff who put in so much hard work and preparation for what proved to be a wonderful event.

Presentation Night Award Winners for 2019:

Encouragement Award – Antwan Austin
Kelvin Hill Award – Bailey McLaughlin
Sports Girl – Hannah McCrohon
Sports Boy – Zac Joyce
Sportspersonship – Nicholas Thompson
Luke Monaghan Award – Blaine Fergusson
Junior Performing Arts – Saba Schoneveld
Senior Performing Arts – Chloe Baker
Principal’s Recognition Award – Paige Barron

Leadership Award – Miranda Brunton
Spirit of St. Joseph’s Award – Sarah Marlin

Congratulations also to Amanda Ryan who received the Diocesan P&F Community Spirit Award.

Drawing our school year to a close will be our End of Year Mass this Friday, 6th December. We will be celebrating with a whole school Mass commencing at 9:00am. The Mass not only provides us the opportunity of fare welling our Year 6 students for the final time, it will also incorporate the induction of our student leaders for the 2020 school year.

New leadership badges have been designed that further promote our school’s history and Catholic identity. I think they look wonderful and being magnetic, will be much easier to put on the students this Friday.

We must also be aware that we share Friday’s mass with the Parish so I request that we leave the parking spaces directly outside the church vacant for the use of our parishioners.

Please remember that during all of these celebrations that we not use the parking in the mall car park as retailers in the mall have previously complained that there is no parking for their patrons. In an effort to try and alleviate these parking issues we will be making parking available on the grassed area beyond the end of the Multi-Purpose Area during both tonight’s and Friday’s celebrations.

Your child’s classroom teacher for 2020 will be emailed directly to the address provided in your parent information. This will be done before the end of the school year. For those who made the time to see me with specific requests for 2020, I was able to facilitate these to the best of my ability at the time, not knowing my full staffing roster for next year until late last week.

Officially school concludes at 3:00pm on Friday, though some parents have enquired about students going home early. Students are able to go home with their own parents or guardians following Mass. Students wanting to leave with another child’s parent must have written permission to do so from their parents.

A reminder that as Christmas draws close, we have exciting news. The Lights of Christmas 2019 will be on again consisting of a fantastic light show that will use the external facade of St Joseph's Cathedral as a canvas to display animations as well as Christmas themed slides. The display will have a St Joseph’s slide and will be bigger and better than last year. The Lights of Christmas will run from the 17th to 23rd of December.

A reminder that the school office will be closed next week from Monday the 9th till Friday the 13th of December due to capital works asbestos removal. Please see our Finance Secretary, Megan Crosthwaite before Friday to finalise school fees for 2019. The office will close for the Christmas period and correspondence will be sent home via the school app alerting the community as to when the office will reopen in January.

Finally, congratulations to Year 6 teacher, Brooke Black who completed her 2 years of study for her Graduate Certificate in Education – Safeguarding Children and Young People through ACU. Well done also to our Year 4 Teachers and students who have secured a Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant for 2020. Ann McCutcheon and Hannah Hamilton have also been approached to present at the K-6 Conference in March next year addressing the topic of how to effectively teach reading in the classroom. Well done to all of these Joeys community members.

KEYBOARD LESSONS

Leanne Voss will offer Keyboard lessons again in 2020 for interested students in grades 1 – 6.

Lessons are of 30-minute duration and will be conducted weekly at school on a rotating timetable so that students do not miss the same lesson each week.

Students will be required to have access to a keyboard for practice, and also purchase a music tutor book and theory book. Lessons will generally be given to groups of 2 or 3 students with some individual lessons available when it is not possible to match students of similar musical ability. The lessons will focus on using a chord bass with an emphasis on utilising keyboard features such as different tones and rhythms.

Playing keyboard is an excellent extra curriculum activity to develop not only musical skills, but creative thinking, hand-eye coordination, concentration and commitment to task.

Enrolment forms are available from the office for both new and continuing students.
