FROM THE PRINCIPAL

On the weekend our school community celebrated our last Children’s mass for the year. During this celebration, the school recognised the service of Mrs Bernadette Mitchell who is retiring from TCC this year. Bernadette has always had a soft spot for Joey’s and I even heard there may have been a tear or two shed as the students sung the school song (that Bernadette both wrote and composed for the school) during mass. Thank-you Bernadette for your commitment to education and the impact you have made on the many Joey’s kids over the years. We wish you the best of luck in all of your future endeavours.

Tonight, we culminate our Term 4 swimming program with our annual swim carnival at the Southside Memorial Pool. The carnival will commence at 5:00pm on the dot, with our youngest students and our grade 6 helpers in the middle 25m pool first. We realize that it is a school night, so we ask that you be at the pool by 4:45pm in order to be ready for our carnival to begin as scheduled.

Our hard-working P&F Association will be running a BBQ for dinner as the carnival does tend to be run over the usual evening meal period.

Due to the majority of our younger students going home earlier from the carnival, age championship medals and the overall house trophy winner will be presented in the MPA 8:35am on Friday morning at a special whole school assembly.

The P&F AGM and last meeting was held for the year last week. During the meeting the following P&F Executive positions were filled for 2020:

  • P&F President – Amanda Conway
  • P&F Vice President – Kate Nembach
  • P&F Secretary – Claire Morrison
  • P&F Treasurer – Debbie Rooney

I would like to take the time to thank both the P&F and the School Board for what has been a very big year. A reminder that the school fete that was originally scheduled for next year has been postponed until 2021 due to the impending capital works over the next 16 months. A reminder that our P&F Community Spirt Award for 2019 will also be handed out at our Presentation Night next week.

All year levels are starting to prepare for our annual Presentation Night that will be held on Thursday, 28th November. Please look for individual correspondence from your child’s teacher as to what may be needed for the evening. We will begin with our Kindy kids first but please remember our big four awards are handed out at the end of the evening. A lack of chairs has sometimes been an issue, so if you are able to bring one along that may help alleviate the problem.

A reminder that the theme is ‘Joyous Christmas’ and the evening will begin at 6:00pm. Gates to the MPA will open at 5:30pm and students will be required to sit with their class groups on the bench seating provided.

We will also be opening the back gate to the oval to provide extra parking spaces for the evening. Just a reminder that our friends from the mall sometimes have an issue with people from our school community parking in their spaces and attending school functions.

Finally, and I may sound a little bit biased here, congratulations to past St Joseph’s student Gabrielle Fitzgerald who last Friday was presented with the ‘Emmaus Award’ at the Year 12 Emmaus Graduation Mass. Well done also to past student Max Alsop who was also a nominee for the prestigious award. Those of us who have been at Joey’s for a while will all remember what a great guy Max was in our school community.

Well done to Gabby who was also the recipient of the ‘St Joseph’s Spirt Award’ at our Joey’s Presentation Night in 2014. I am an immensely proud Principal and father.

APRE REFLECTION

Patiently endure the trials you are sure to face for Jesus.
The Gospel of Luke 21:5-19

This week marks the final week of Ordinary Time in the Church’s liturgical calendar and draws us almost to the end of our journey through the gospel of Luke. Next week’s reading of the crucifixion concludes the Year of Luke. It is in this context that we need to read today’s gospel passage. Jesus and his disciples are gathered around the Temple in Jerusalem in the final days before he is to be put to death. The end is imminent and Jesus takes the opportunity to reassure the disciples that, although they are about to experience a period of distress, betrayal and persecution that will stretch well into the future, ultimately, God’s love and mercy will triumph – not only in their own lives but also in the world.

Jesus draws a picture of terrifying challenges that his followers will have to face in the future. However, they will have the 'words and wisdom' of Jesus to rely on when the time comes. The symbolic moment for the Jews is the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem; but perhaps for today the symbolic moment is the destruction of the World Trade Centre. It is significant for us that Jesus speaks of 'words' rather than weapons, 'wisdom' rather than revenge, and 'endurance' rather than violence.

P & F NEWS

The P&F had their AGM on Monday last week, and the current executive team retained their positions for 2020. Congratulations to all members of our executive team, and thank you for the time already spent with the P&F. Remember as a parent and friend of Joeys, everyone is automatically a member of the P&F, but if you’ve thought about extra ways you can contribute, please come and see our executive team who are:

President:

Amanda Conway

Vice President:

Kate Nembach

Secretary:

Claire Morrison

Treasurer:

Debbie Rooney

As our current P&F executives are looking to finish their time at Joeys soon, we’ll be looking to fill shadows to these positions over the next 12 months, to ease our new executives into 2021 and beyond. If you’re interested in any of the executive positions, or keen to learn about the roles, please come and see us.

The swimming carnival is this afternoon, and if you can spare some time over at the BBQ in between races, it’d be much appreciated. Any help would be great, and we’d love for some new faces to come and join in.

As the year winds down, we’re asking that all returning families to the school, if you haven’t already, get in and register for our online tuckshop service Quickcliq. As of next year, the tuckshop is cashless, and will not accept money in paper bags. The link can be found here at the link below, and it’s also on the app. It’s quick and easy.

Reminder:

Wed Nov 20th:

Mon Nov 25th:

PARENT LOUNGE

Changes to your address, phone number or work phone number can be made in Parent Lounge. To do this, log in through the Skoolbag App, go to the Parent Details tab, make your changes, and then submit.

Changes to Parent Lounge are the submission of your child’s absentee days (but only for the current term). It will be similar to the way you do this on the Skoolbag app. Once accepted our end (when we log into our computer), this will be entered straight onto our system, and saves the double handling.

SCHOOL BANKING

School banking happens every Thursday.

If you wish to start school banking, you need to open a Youth Saver Account at the Commonwealth bank, make no deposit and they will provide you with your banking book and details.

Please send your child’s banking book in so they can place it in the grey classroom-banking bag.

VOLUNTEERS INDUCTION SESSIONS

WPH&S Volunteers Inductions are necessary for the safety of your children. Therefore, we ask that all parents who generously volunteer their time to the school, either in a classroom or in the tuckshop, attend a very brief induction regarding maintaining a safe environment for the children of St. Joseph’s.

These sessions do not take long and are available after assembly on a Monday morning with Deanne Senini, and on Wednesday afternoons from 2:30pm - 3:00pm. Debbie Rooney will conduct induction sessions in the tuckshop, if you are helping in there.

Thanks

KEYBOARD LESSONS

Leanne Voss will offer Keyboard lessons again in 2020 for interested students in grades 1 – 6.

Lessons are of 30 minute duration and will be conducted weekly at school on a rotating timetable so that students do not miss the same lesson each week.

Students will be required to have access to a keyboard for practice, and also purchase a music tutor book and theory book. Lessons will generally be given to groups of 2 or 3 students with some individual lessons available when it is not possible to match students of similar musical ability. The lessons will focus on using a chord bass with an emphasis on utilising keyboard features such as different tones and rhythms.

Playing keyboard is an excellent extra curriculum activity to develop not only musical skills, but creative thinking, hand-eye coordination, concentration and commitment to task.

Enrolment forms are available from the office for both new and continuing students.
