FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Congratulations to Year 6 student Sarah Marlin who submitted one of four successful entries out of 400 in Catholic Education’s Student Protection Poster competition. As a winner, Sarah will receive an iPad as well as having elements of her artwork featured on next year’s Student Protection Posters that CEO will be distributing to all schools Diocesan wide. Well done to Sarah as well as all of the students who submitted entries to this very important cause.

A huge thanks to the 5 Star Club that operate at the Park Avenue Hotel each Friday evening for their generous annual donation to the Joey’s community. Last Friday night, the 5 Star Club again donated $1000 to the school that will go toward school resources for our students.

This year the 5 Star club also made a generous donation to our senior netball team as they fundraised for their trip to the State Netball Cup in Maroochydore on the Sunny Coast. Joey’s are the only Rockhampton school to travel to this event each year to take on the big schools in the South East corner of our state. The donation from the 5 Star club made this trip possible and our students gained experiences, friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. Thank-you for the wonderful work this generous organisation continues to do in supporting the local Park Avenue area.

This Thursday evening the Year 5 class will be holding their Term 4 Disco. The theme for the night will be ‘Hawaiian Beach Party’ which seems appropriate with the recent temperatures we have been experiencing. Please note that with the impending capital works, this may be the last disco that we have for some time. With this in mind, we look forward to seeing you there for a fun community night.

As you may have noticed, the house on the corner of Haynes Street and Lauga Street was removed through the week. I am sure the Thompson family may have shed a tear with their long-time family home disappearing nearly overnight. The addition of this land will be invaluable to our students in the future. We are also expecting the delivery of our teaching demountables sometime next week. For those who may have been unable to attend our community information night a couple of weeks ago, the designs for all three stages are on display as you enter the Multi-Purpose Area. Come in, have a look and marvel at the projected facilities that our community will be able to enjoy.

As part of our enterprise bargaining process, union members at St Joseph’s Park Avenue have voted to take industrial action. Industrial action is scheduled to commence from 7 November 2019 but at this stage does not involve any strike action.

Please be assured that the safety and wellbeing of our students will not be compromised in any way if industrial action takes place. It is also expected that the school routine will continue as normal.

If you have any questions about the impact of industrial action at St Joseph’s Park Avenue, please don’t hesitate to contact myself as Principal through the school office.

Thank you for your ongoing support of St Joseph’s and Catholic Education.

APRE REFLECTION

The Sadducees try to put Jesus in conflict with Moses.
The Gospel of Luke 20:27-38

Life after death, in one form or another, is a common belief of most of the major faiths of the world. It is certainly a basic tenet of Christian faith. While the Pharisees believed in resurrection, the Sadducees did not. The Sadducees, whose name means ‘righteous ones’ were an elite group within the Jewish faith. Today’s gospel passage depicts an attempt by the Sadducees to ridicule belief in an afterlife by questioning Jesus about an extremely exaggerated scenario.

Billy Elliott and the Resurrection

Billy Elliott was a boy brought up in a strife-torn mining town in the north of England. He discovered a passion for dancing. At an interview at the Royal Ballet School which was going badly, he was asked: ‘What do you feel when you’re dancing?’

‘I’ve got fire in my body.’ And he got the scholarship because the panel realised that when Billy danced, he became ‘fully alive’: bodymindspirit fully integrated. When Billy danced, everything that Billy was, was dancing.

That is what our Resurrection is all about. Our whole personality will be dancing with the radiance of Divine Fire coursing through our bodymindspirit. The Sadducees’ small-minded sarcasm could not grasp that we will be bodies transfigured, translucent to divine light and energy.

We could take a moment to pray that, by the grace of God, our bodies will dance, enflamed by Divine Love.

Swimming Carnival

Our annual swimming carnival will be held next Wednesday night (20th Nov) at the Southside Pool.

The carnival is commencing at 5:00pm sharp with the Prep races and finishes at approximately 8:00pm. The 25m races will be held first in the short course pool. Following the completion of all 25m races we will commence the 100m and 50m races in the main pool. The program will be completed with the open house relays.

As it may be a late night for some of our younger students, age championship medallions will be presented in the MPA at 8:35am Friday morning in front of the entire school.

Booklist Supplies Procedures for 2020

A very important note went home a couple of weeks ago explaining a change in procedures for the ordering of back to school booklist requirements for 2020. I strongly encourage you to read it carefully as it has the potential to save you a significant amount of time and money on your child’s back to school supplies for next year. If you are having trouble locating that note or your child’s booklist, they have been added to the Skoolbag app under the parent notes section.

If you have any questions about the process or need some assistance with placing your order, please come and see me. To have your order delivered to your home before the start of the 2020 school year, please place your order by Sunday, 15th December.

The feedback I’ve received from parents is that the process is very easy to follow and has saved families a significant amount of money. If you have any feedback on this new process, I’d love to hear it and pass it on to Kookaburra Educational Resources.

We are expecting 194 student packs to be delivered to school and 8 home delivery orders. It’s wonderful to see such a large number of families supporting our change of process.

If you’d prefer to purchase from Capricorn Educational Resources, there is a box in the school office to place your order sheet.

Have a great day.

P & F NEWS

The swimming carnival is next Wednesday, and the P&F are looking to run the BBQ to provide a sausage sizzle for dinner. A note went home this week about orders for your family, and we ask that these are returned by Monday 18th November. We will require help to cook and serve on the night as well, even if it’s only for half an hour, in between watching races. Any help is much appreciated, and we’d love for some new faces to come and join in.

Notes for our 90th Anniversary commemorative Tea Towels also went home last week. The P&F have generously gifted one to each of our Joeys Families, but if you wish to order any extra as Christmas presents or keepsakes etc, please have the number and money returned by Monday 18th November so we can have them delivered on time.

As the year winds down, we’re asking that all returning families to the school, if you haven’t already, get in and register for our online tuckshop service Quickcliq. As of next year, the tuckshop is cashless, and will not accept money in paper bags. The link can be found at the link below, and it’s also on the app. It’s quick and easy.

Reminder:

Monday Nov 18th:

9:00am P&F Coffee and Chat, after assembly

Monday Nov 18th:

TUCKSHOP NEWS

We are now half way through the term and soon the school year will be coming to end. Tuckshop will be starting to run stock down and certain items will become unavailable. If you order via Quickcliq, those items will be unavailable to order. If a substitution needs to be made and there is a price difference, a refund will be made (partial or full) via Quickcliq. If you still order via brown paper bag, please also take into consideration that your child may get a substitution.

Thank You,
Debbie Rooney

PARENT LOUNGE

Changes to your address, phone number or work phone number can be made in Parent Lounge. To do this, log in through the Skoolbag App, go to the Parent Details tab, make your changes, and then submit.

Changes to Parent Lounge are the submission of your child’s absentee days (but only for the current term). It will be similar to the way you do this on the Skoolbag app. Once accepted our end (when we log into our computer), this will be entered straight onto our system, and saves the double handling.

SCHOOL BANKING

School banking happens every Thursday.

If you wish to start school banking, you need to open a Youth Saver Account at the Commonwealth bank, make no deposit and they will provide you with your banking book and details.

Please send your child’s banking book in so they can place it in the grey classroom-banking bag.

VOLUNTEERS INDUCTION SESSIONS

WPH&S Volunteers Inductions are necessary for the safety of your children. Therefore, we ask that all parents who generously volunteer their time to the school, either in a classroom or in the tuckshop, attend a very brief induction regarding maintaining a safe environment for the children of St. Joseph’s.

These sessions do not take long and are available after assembly on a Monday morning with Deanne Senini, and on Wednesday afternoons from 2:30pm - 3:00pm. Debbie Rooney will conduct induction sessions in the tuckshop, if you are helping in there.

Thanks

KEYBOARD LESSONS

Leanne Voss will offer Keyboard lessons again in 2020 for interested students in grades 1 – 6.

Lessons are of 30 minute duration and will be conducted weekly at school on a rotating timetable so that students do not miss the same lesson each week.

Students will be required to have access to a keyboard for practice, and also purchase a music tutor book and theory book. Lessons will generally be given to groups of 2 or 3 students with some individual lessons available when it is not possible to match students of similar musical ability. The lessons will focus on using a chord bass with an emphasis on utilising keyboard features such as different tones and rhythms.

Playing keyboard is an excellent extra curriculum activity to develop not only musical skills, but creative thinking, hand-eye coordination, concentration and commitment to task.

Enrolment forms are available from the office for both new and continuing students.
