FROM THE PRINCIPAL

I begin this week by congratulating all of the families that were involved with the Sacramental program on the weekend with many students taking part in their Confirmation and First Eucharist. It was wonderful to have the Bishop at the celebration and I am sure every child will remember his kind words as he spoke individually with each child during the liturgy. It was also great to be able to gather for a celebratory BBQ afterwards as well. Congratulations to Mrs Brennan and the Sacramental team for all of their efforts.

As mentioned a couple of weeks ago, we have contracted a local business to commence some spot repairs on our school pick-up zone this weekend. Major repairs to this area of the school will not take place until we have a greater idea of the scope of our upcoming capital works. I thank you and your car’s suspension for your understanding in this matter.

Last week our existing website was updated to ensure we meet with compliance standards specifically in the area of Student Protection, however, please be aware that we are in the middle of creating an entirely new website to cater for the existing needs of our community. The existing website has updated contact information for both our school as well as our Kindy that should provide current details while our school’s new site is being developed.

Finally, Mrs Giselle Vaz De Miranda from Year 2 will be taking some emergency Long Service Leave until the end of the Term to travel back to Brazil and take care of her family. Giselle will be travelling today and will be back for the resumption of Term 3. We wish Gisele safe travels and offer our prayers of support for her family at this time.

Don’t Forget …

  • State of Origin Free Dress day Wednesday 5th June – Gold Coin donation
  • Rockhampton Show Holiday, Thurs 13th June
  • School Photo Day, Monday 17th June
  • Prep Enrolment Forms for 2020 due by end of term
  • Reports available on Parent Lounge at the end of Term 2

Have a great week.

Community Satisfaction Surveys.

As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, each school or college conducted by Catholic Education Diocese of Rockhampton (CEDR) progresses through a five-year cycle of review and improvement.

Throughout the five-year cycle, schools and colleges systematically review their achievements in the four Dimensions of the School Improvement Framework (Catholic Ethos and Identity, Effective Teaching and Learning, Pastoral Support and Wellbeing and Leadership Partnerships and Resourcing), utilizing prescribed self-review documents, in preparation for the External Validation Visit.

As part of the external processes used by CEDR, community satisfaction surveys of staff, parents and students are conducted by an external agency in year 2 and year 5 of the five-year cycle of review and improvement. It has now been 2 years since we last surveyed our community and will be looking for feedback from our students, staff and parent bodies.

The survey will become live on Friday the 7th of June and finish on Sunday the 23rd of June. Parents will be emailed with a link to access the survey using your provided email address. If we do not have an up-to-date email address, please see our office staff as soon as possible. Students able to complete the survey will do so during school time.

We would encourage you to complete the surveys which will be sent via email. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the school office.

It’s important to note the surveys are anonymous and participants are not identified in any way.

APRE REFLECTION

Jesus Leaves Peace as His Farewell

John 14:23-29
“The Advocate, the Holy Spirit,
whom the Father will send in my name,
will teach you everything
and remind you of all I have said to you.”

Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit to the disciples and to the world. The Holy Spirit is to be the Advocate (the Paraclete) of the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit performs a dual purpose: firstly, to carry on the teaching; and secondly, to continue to remind the believers of all that Jesus said and did. The action of the Holy Spirit continues in the world today – inspiring and teaching those who are open to hearing and keeping alive the memory of Jesus, his teaching and his compassion. We talk about being full of school spirit and team spirit but these feelings of loyalty and commitment are only a distant echo of what it is to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

You will notice the prayer assembly times above have changed. In the interests of less disruption to the curriculum and to maintain optimum productivity in classrooms, the decision has been made to bring the prayer assembly times forward to 10:30am. This change allows Friday lunch times to remain the same as the rest of the week and those students involved in interschool sport an opportunity to prepare for sport and board buses in a timely manner.

Confirmation & First Communion

Last Saturday, many members of the North Rockhampton Parishes joined Bishop Michael to celebrate Eucharist at Our Lady Help of Christians. During this visit by the Bishop to our parish, 14 students from Joeys were Confirmed and celebrated their First Communion.

Premier’s Reading Challenge finishes

Premier’s Reading Challenge

The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is an annual state wide initiative for state and non-state schools and home-educated students up to Year 9, and children attending early childhood centres. Over the past 14 years, more than 12 million books have been read, and in 2018 alone, 181,000 school, early childhood and individual readers participated in the challenge with more than 2.46 million books read throughout the PRC reading period.

The challenge is not a competition but aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read widely for pleasure and learning. Students can participate in the challenge within their school or as individual readers (home-educated students or students whose schools are not participating in the program).

For a student to successfully complete the challenge they must read or experience the allocated number of books for their year level during the reading period. Students who complete the challenge have their efforts recognised through the receipt of a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier of Queensland.

Year level

Number of books

Prep – Year 2

Read or experience 20 books

Years 3 – 4

20 books

Years 5 – 9

15 books

Why read?

Literacy skills are vital to ensuring children have the best chance to succeed in their schooling and life. The PRC is an opportunity for students to be enthusiastic about reading, writing, authors and illustrators. Reading a variety of books builds vocabulary and knowledge, improves spelling and comprehension, can improve confidence and is also a great way to relax.

To successfully complete the PRC, students must read or experience the number of books indicated in the table below in English or additional languages. The requirement for Year 5 through to Year 9 students to read 15 books acknowledges that older students are likely to select longer, more complex books that may take them longer to read.

If they have time, students are welcome to read more books than the challenge requirements. They just need to record them on another reader record form. All books will go towards Queensland’s total PRC tally.

The following activities can be counted towards the challenge:

  • reading independently
  • shared reading
  • being read to (Prep – Year 2 for books written in English; and all year levels for additional languages).

The following literature forms can be counted towards the challenge:

  • printed books
  • e-books, virtual books and digital publications
  • graphic novels and comic books
  • audio and braille books
  • newspapers, magazines and recipe books
  • books in additional languages (other than English).

Your child should have received a reader record form. This is not a compulsory school activity, however, if your child would like to participate, please complete this form as they finish each book and return it to the school office once completed. It would be appreciated if these forms can be returned by Friday, 23rd August.

WOOLWORTHS EARN AND LEARN

St Joseph’s has registered to participate in the 2019 Woolworths Earn and Learn program. This program runs from 1st May through to 25th June. In the past, thanks to this program, our school has been able to order a large variety of resources to support our students in their learning. If you are purchasing groceries from Woolworths, please start collecting the stickers. There is a collection box in the office as well as a box at the Parkhurst and Stockland Woolworths stores.

UNDER 8s MORNING

Our annual Under 8’s morning will take place at St Joey’s this term on Thursday 20th June. This is a day where we celebrate the learning and development of our younger students. The day will begin with a short liturgy in the multi-purpose area. Following the liturgy, the children will be free to investigate the various hands on activities prepared by our Prep – Year 3 teachers. Parents are most welcome to attend this part of the day. After first break students will head back to class where they will complete activities with their class for the rest of the day. Students in Prep to Year 3 are invited to come along to this day in free dress. It is essential that this free dress consists of clothing which is sun safe (no sleeveless shirts), a school hat and fully enclosed shoes. If you are able to assist your child’s teacher on the day, please let them know as soon as possible. If you have any questions about this day or know of any organisation who might like to set up an activity for the morning, please don’t hesitate to see me. Thanks to the generosity of the P&F, students will be provided with a sausage on bread for first break.

ICAS ASSESSMENTS

Students are invited to participate in ICAS assessments in 2019. This year the ICAS assessments have moved to an online format and are occurring later in the year. These assessments are designed to recognise and reward academic excellence. The assessments are based on the curriculum for each relevant year level. These assessments are designed to allow students to demonstrate a deeper, integrated and thorough level of learning.

PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITY

Opera Australia will perform Puccini’s popular opera Madama Butterfly at the Pilbeam Theatre in July. Young local singers (aged 10 to 14) have the opportunity to be part of the local children’s chorus in this production for the Rockhampton performances. Group auditions, conducted by choirmaster Julie Layt, will be held on 29th and 30th May. For more information and to register on line, visit

STRATEGY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of fluency.

Strategy: Reread Text

To try to increase a child’s fluency they can reread a selection of text several times until they can read it smoothly, accurately and with expression. Rereading also assists a student when they are having trouble understanding a passage.

Spelling:
Strategy: Pyramid Words

This activity involves writing spelling words in a pyramid shape. Start with the first letter. On the next line write the first two letters. On the next line write the first three letters. Continue until you have written the entire word.

Example:

T

TH

THE

THEM

Mental Computation:

Knowing strategies to assist students to recall number facts quickly is essential for success in mathematics. Each year level will be focussing on particular number facts strategies throughout 2019. Please contact your child’s teacher to find out the strategy your child should be practicing this week.

Game – Dice

  • Using two dice, take turns rolling the dice and race your child/ren to mentally calculate the sum of the dice. This game can also be used for subtraction, multiplication and division. You could also extend the game by using more than 2 dice or non-standard dice.

STEM

JOEY’S MAKERY

Last November we applied for a Grant under Maker Projects – Stream A, an element of the Inspiring Australia – Science Engagement Programme. We were successful in our application for this Grant. The same grant was offered in 2017 and closed within 2 days, and the previous year it closed after a week. So, third time lucky, (very lucky) as the applications were exhausted within hours of opening.

Our proposal was to create a Maker Space (Joey’s Makery) that is an exploratory area in the Media / Drama precinct of the school. Joey’s Makery will give learners the opportunity to imagine, design, collaborate, be curious and problem solve through a range of challenges. Joey’s Makery will be open before school (Tues – Fri) and first lunch (Mon-Thurs) to a limited number of learners. Our explorers will be welcome to work on a STEM project over a series of visits.

Thanks to the awesome Run4Fun efforts, we will be able to purchase extra STEM resources other than what the Grant has been able to accommodate.

Keep an eye out in future newsletters and the App for some of the Joey’s Makery projects.

P & F NEWS

Do you use the Haynes Street entrance at all in your drop off/pick up journey? Keep your eyes peeled as we now have School Zone signs, advertising the times where we need to reduce our speed to 40km/h. Haynes Street is a notorious road and attracts many speeding cars, which is very dangerous given that many of our students and families cross this road sometimes twice a day. A big thank you to Claire Morrison for her campaigning and thorough work to see this achieved.

Our donated set of “Anxious Kids” by Michael Grose and Dr Jodi Richardson is now in the library. Please pop in and see Michelle Roberts for any other information and to simply have a look at these and many others available in our Parent Library.

Winter is Coming……and so is our Online Tuckshop ordering, so watch this space.
