Catch up Tests

If your child is involved in the NAPLAN assessments, please make sure they have a good rest each night, have a substantial breakfast on the mornings of the tests and are at school on time.

I wish all the students well in these assessments and look forward to receiving the results to assist us in planning our future curriculum focus areas.

St Joseph’s has registered to participate in the 2019 Woolworths Earn and Learn program. This program runs from 1st May through to 25th June. In the past, thanks to this program, our school has been able to order a large variety of resources to support our students in their learning. If you are purchasing groceries from Woolworths, please start collecting the stickers. There is a collection box in the office as well as a box at the Parkhurst Woolworths store.

We are currently taking enrolment applications for Prep 2020. If you have a child, or know of someone outside of our school community, who is due to start Prep next year, please drop in to the office to collect an enrolment pack. Enrolments are due by the end of this term.

APRE REFLECTION

The Risen Jesus and the disciples catch many fish.
John 21:1-14
As soon as they came ashore they saw that there was some bread there, and a charcoal fire with fish cooking on it. Jesus said, ‘Bring some of the fish you have just caught.’ Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore, full of big fish, one hundred and fifty-three of them; and in spite of there being so many the net was not broken. Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’

Have you thought? – 153 fish

When the disciples drag ashore their miraculous haul of fish, the gospel writer tells us that there were 153 fish! This seems an odd number and an odd fact to specifically mention. Mathematically, 153 is a number with several interesting attributes, and historically, it has been suggested that the ancients believed that there were 153 species of fish or 153 nations in the world. Like nearly every number used in the Bible, its meaning is symbolic, not literal. It is intended to convey that the catch of fish was huge and is indicative of the vast numbers of people who will be caught up in the disciples' new ministry.

Prayer Assembly Time Change to 10:30am

You will notice the prayer assembly times above have changed. In the interests of less disruption to the curriculum and to maintain optimum productivity in classrooms, the decision has been made to bring the prayer assembly times forward to 10:30am. This change allows Friday lunch times to remain the same as the rest of the week and those students involved in interschool sport an opportunity to prepare for sport and board buses in a timely manner.

CLASSROOM NEWS

YR 3M

This week in 3M we remember and reflect on the ANZACS who served and fought in WW1. Some students from 3M joined in with the rest of St Joseph’s Park Avenue to march in the ANZAC Day parade through town. They did a wonderful job of representing the school as well as remembering those who fought and died in the war.

3M helped in the making of a beautiful wreath to lay at our ANZAC prayer assembly as well as getting the chance to make our own. We also learnt about the various traditions of ANZAC day including The Ode, the Last Post and the morning Dawn Service.

3M have also been busy learning all about persuasive and narrative writing in time for NAPLAN next week as well as doing practice tests to help us feel more confident ready for the real test.

Miss McGinley has very much enjoyed listening to all the wonderful adventures of 3M from their school holidays and has loved seeing the wonderful photos that come along. Any photos of weekend getaways or holidays are more than welcomed to be shared in our class.  We love seeing what each family gets up to in their spare time.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Congratulations to the following students and staff who will celebrate their birthday this week. They are: Isabella Austin (1H), Gabriella Halil (3T), Star Loader (Yr 4), Emma Clarke (2F), Isabella Currie (Yr 6), Peppa Davey (3T), Mrs Paap (Yr 1), Mrs Smith (Prep) and Mrs Roberts (Library)

Have a great day.

P & F NEWS

National Banana Day last Wednesday was well received, with the students enjoying fresh bananas, and home baked banana goodies. Thanks for the extra hands we had in Breaky Club that morning. If anyone, that is Mum’s, Dad’s, Grandparents, relatives, get to school early with a spare 5-10 minutes, please come in and see if there’s enough help in Breaky Club. If the manpower isn’t there, it’s just too busy to provide a full service, so fun mornings like National Banana Day, will get missed, which would be a shame, but please make sure that you do the Induction with Mrs Deanne Senini (takes about 10/15 minutes) and have a current Bluecard. The Bluecard forms can be obtained from the office.

More and more of our regular tuck shop helpers are also being spread thin, so if you’ve thought about helping in tuck shop, for whatever time you can spare, now’s the time to see Debbie Rooney. The more helpers we have, means we can stretch the roster so helpers may only need to do a shift once a fortnight or a month. If that’s all you can manage, that’s perfect.

Helpers are also needed to staff our Uniform Shop. The shop is open Monday 8:15 – 8:45 and Wednesday 2:45-3:15. There’s plenty of good quality uniforms available, especially jackets, which are popular as the cooler months are starting to get close. If you can assist in opening the Uniform Shop, please see Amanda Conway, or the ladies in the office.

The Pasta Bolognaise special was well received last week. Remember it’s only available on Wednesdays in Terms 2 and 3.

The first of our “Coffee and Chat” mornings happened last Monday after parade. These are just informal sessions to bring together the families from different grades who have come to attend morning assembly. Instead of families hanging around to chat in the carpark with their little ones etc, please hang around the tuck shop and have a “cuppa” and something to eat whilst meeting some new faces.

Our next P & F meeting will be Wednesday 15th May, and it’s open to one and all to come and have a chat and see what’s on the cards for our school.

Reminders:

Mon May 13th: P&F Coffee and Chat, 9:00am after assembly (15 mins or so)
Wed May 15th: Next P&F Meeting, 6:30 in the staff room.

Thanks,
Joeys P&F

VOLUNTEERS INDUCTION SESSIONS

WPH&S Volunteers Inductions are necessary for the safety of your children. Therefore, we ask that all parents who generously volunteer their time to the school, either in a classroom or in the tuckshop, attend a very brief induction regarding maintaining a safe environment for the children of St. Joseph’s.

These sessions do not take long and are available after assembly on a Monday morning with Deanne Senini, and on Wednesday afternoons from 2:30pm - 3:00pm. Debbie Rooney will conduct induction sessions in the tuckshop, if you are helping in there.

Thanks
