FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL
Mr Fitzgerald is currently off work unwell. If you have any concerns please don’t hesitate to contact myself or Mrs Bernadette Brennan in Mr Fitzgerald’s absence. We wish Bernard a speedy recovery.
Thank you to all the staff and students who came along to march with our school at the ANZAC Day parade last Thursday. Thank you also to Mrs Amanda Conway for organising a group of students to attend the Dawn Service and lay a wreath on behalf of our school. Attending ceremonies and marching on ANZAC Day shows our appreciation for all those who fought for the freedoms we enjoy today. We owe much to our ANZAC heroes, as much of the life we lead today is in no small part due to those who stood for what they believed in, many of which paid the ultimate sacrifice.
‘Greater love has no one that this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.’ John 15:13
LEST WE FORGET
Thanks to everyone who helped make our athletics carnival a success last week. A special thank you to Mrs Brennan who put in many hours to ensure the smooth running of the carnival. It was lovely to see all the students having a go and competing the best they can. Congratulations to all the age champions.
A reminder that there are parent teacher interviews this week. If you haven’t booked an interview through parent lounge, please contact your child’s class teacher to schedule a time. Please be aware that there is no supervision for students during these interviews. Students are welcome to attend their interview with their parents and be an active participant in discussions around their progress.
Last week we welcomed Miss Gabriella Dempster and Mrs Rachael Duncan to our staff. Gabby has been appointed as our Year 5 teacher and Rachael as our Year 5 teacher assistant, both to teach alongside Mrs Erin Tranberg. I’m sure everyone will make Gabby and Rachael feel welcome.
This term our Year 4, 5 and 6 students are invited to participate in a 4 week self defence program. This annual program complements the Daniel Morcombe Curriculum and provides students with some simple but effective strategies to defend themselves if they ever are in a situation which may warrant it. A note has gone home with all Year 4, 5 and 6 students earlier this week with more details and a permission form. These sessions will begin Friday 17th May so please return the permission forms by Monday 13th May.
St Joseph’s has registered to participate in the 2019 Woolworths Earn and Learn program. This program runs from 1st May through to 25th June. In the past, thanks to this program, our school has been able to order a large variety of resources to support our students in their learning. If you are purchasing groceries from Woolworths, please start collecting the stickers. There will be a collection box in the office from this week.
We are currently taking enrolment applications for Prep 2020. If you have a child who is due to start Prep next year, please drop in to the office to collect an enrolment pack. Enrolments are due by the end of this term.
Don’t Forget …
- Parent Teacher Interviews – Monday 29th April – Friday 3rd May
- Self Defence Permission notes due back – Monday 13th May
- NAPLAN Online Testing for Years 3 and 5: Tuesday 14th May – Thursday 16th May
- Labour Day Holiday, Monday 6th May
- Prep Enrolment Forms for 2020 due by the end of term

APRE REFLECTION
“You believe in me, Thomas, because you have seen me;
happy those who have not seen me, but still believe!”
John 20:29
The disciple Thomas has received a pretty raw deal from history. The phrase, doubting Thomas, has found its way into our everyday language and condemns Thomas as the one who wouldn’t take the word of his fellow disciples but wanted to see the Risen Lord himself. However, rather than remembering Thomas for his doubt, we should remember Thomas as the one who makes the extraordinary declaration of faith, ‘My Lord and my God!’ It is Thomas, alone amongst all those who recognise the greatness of Jesus across the four gospels, who acknowledges Jesus as not just the Messiah, but God.
When Thomas made his declaration of faith, Jesus said, ‘You believe because you can see me. Happy (or Blessed) are those who have not seen and yet believe.’ (v29) Because this gospel was written 60 years or so after the time of Jesus, there were indeed many who believed but had not ever seen him. The blessing is on all those who believe without the benefit of a physical encounter of Jesus. Whilst the gospel was written as an acknowledgement of those at the end of the 1st Century, it is also a blessing and encouragement for believers of today!

Prayer Assembly Time Change to 10:30am
You will notice the prayer assembly times above have changed. In the interests of less disruption to the curriculum and to maintain optimum productivity in classrooms, the decision has been made to bring the prayer assembly times forward to 10:30am. This change allows Friday lunch times to remain the same as the rest of the week and those students involved in interschool sport an opportunity to prepare for sport and board buses in a timely manner.

CLASSROOM NEWS
YR 4
Fantastic Year Four
In the last week of Term 1 we had fun making our pom poms for our ANZAC wreath. Mrs Mooney, during the holidays, put it together and we were very proud for Charli to lay it at the base of the Cross during our ANZAC day service on Friday last week. We were very impressed with the amount of year 4’s who participated in one of the many services held around the region on Thursday. We even had representatives at the Dawn Service where Sam Conway was interviewed and spoke exceptionally well.
During the first week of this term we had two impressive days of sport. The participation once again of our year 4’s was commendable. Congratulations to Noa Barnes and Ava Tranberg on their Age Champion medals presented at Emmaus on Wednesday.
This term we will be focusing on our Stewardship of the Earth through many of our subjects. So if your child comes home with ideas on how to streamline your recycling program please encourage them and send them back with your household ideas.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Congratulations to the following students who will celebrate their birthday this week. They are: Paige Brydon (PG), Lucia Jarrett (1C), Evie Boswood (1C), Jacob McLean (3T), Kaidyn Stuart (3), Matilda Ballinger (2F), Monica Bartsch (2M) and Charlie Vidler (Yr 6).
Have a great day.

P & F NEWS
A huge thank you to those who helped cook and serve food at both of our Field and Track Events at our Sports Days for 2019. The donations of homebake were also well received with all profits made going back to help keep Brekky Club alive and running.
In what was a busy week back to school, it was great to see the students we had turn up to represent Joeys at the Dawn Service, for if not the first time, but for the first time in a long time. The P&F ordered a wreath, and it was a beautiful creation from Flowerbox Rockhampton, that was laid with respect by some of our Grade 6 students. You all did Joeys proud, and we hope this is a tradition we can uphold for future years.
The new Tuck shop Menu went home on Monday. If yours “didn’t make it to you” please check bags or pop into the Office to get another one, as it contains some new items, including a special for Terms 2 and 3.
Our next meeting will be Wednesday 15th May, and it’s open to one and all to come and have a chat and see what’s on the cards for our school.
Reminder:
Wednesday May 15th: Next P&F Meeting, 6:30 in the staff room.
Thanks,
Joeys P&F
TUCKSHOP NEWS
A new Tuckshop menu went home earlier this week. Tuckshop is trialling a Pasta Bolognese as a special on Wednesdays only. Students can only order it on Wednesdays.
As some students noticed last term, Tuckshop no longer has slushies available. The machine was continually breaking down, so we decided to send it back.
Also, Tuckshop is still looking for volunteers to help a few hours a week, fortnight, or monthly. Some of our volunteers are no longer able to help due to work commitments. Any little help or time is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Debbie Rooney

VOLUNTEERS INDUCTION SESSIONS
WPH&S Volunteers Inductions are necessary for the safety of your children. Therefore, we ask that all parents who generously volunteer their time to the school, either in a classroom or in the tuckshop, attend a very brief induction regarding maintaining a safe environment for the children of St. Joseph’s.
These sessions do not take long and are available after assembly on a Monday morning with Deanne Senini, and on Wednesday afternoons from 2:30pm - 3:00pm. Debbie Rooney will conduct induction sessions in the tuckshop, if you are helping in there.
Thanks
