APRE REFLECTION

REFLECTION

Twenty-one-year-old Michaela is helping to build a social enterprise for people with chronic illnesses at The Purple House in Alice Springs. As a Purple House trainee, Michaela completed a Certificate IV in business management. She was also recently promoted from administration trainee to permanent employee, working on The Wellbeing Program.

The young Alywarr woman cares for patients as they receive dialysis and helps them to feel at home and remain hopeful during treatment. Patients in turn pass on traditional knowledge to Michaela. The program is run by the Western Desert Nganampa Walytja Palyantjaku Tjutaku Aboriginal Corporation, with support from Caritas Australia.

First Australians are twice as likely to experience chronic kidney disease, and four times more likely to die from it than other Australians. With the help of staff like Michaela, the Aboriginal-controlled service gives patients the opportunity to stay connected with their culture. They do this through traditional healing practices and income-generating activities, such as making bush balms and soaps. Profits are invested back into supporting patients receiving remote care and help to get people on dialysis back on country.

You can watch Michaela’s story here.

Term 2 Physical Education Program

Next term Prep to Year 2 will be participating in a Traditional Indigenous Games Program run by Charlene Mann from Darumbal Community Youth Services Inc (DCYSI). The program will commence in Week 2 (Tuesday, 30 April) and will continue until Week 6 (Tuesday, 28 May). In this program students will receive a brief introduction of the Darumbal Language as well as participate in learning different traditional games. A consent form is being sent home with the students and can also be found on the App. Parents are asked to sign the consent form and return to their child’s teacher by the end of this week.

Years 3 to 6 will be participating in the School Tenpin Bowling Roll ‘n Strike Program. The program was designed by the Tenpin Bowling Association of Queensland and the equipment to run the program is on loan from Rocky Bowl & Leisure Centre. During the program students learn how to score and the basics of Tenpin Bowling. The program is run at school and will run from Week 2 to Week 8. As a culminating activity, students will have the opportunity to play a real game at the Rocky Bowl & Leisure Centre. This has been made possible by the school’s successful application for a sports grant which will subside the cost of both a bus and the game.

CLASSROOM NEWS

Prep M

It’s been a very busy term in Prep M. We have spent time learning about each other and our families, sharing stories and photos of things we enjoy doing. Our science learning about living things produced a huge interest in the world around us. We investigated many things on our Comm Box including how spiders make their webs time lapse video and watching plants grow. Of course, we can’t forget to mention our new class member Rainbow Fish! We have enjoyed learning new letters and sounds and creating art activities that relate to them. Our iMaths investigation of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears was also a fantastic opportunity to learn about size, graphing, invitation writing, and story retell.

With Easter not far around the corner, we have embarked on learning the true meaning of Easter and the special liturgical season we are in. We are looking closely at Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, the significant events that took part in Jesus life through different activities.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy Easter break! See you in term 2!

Prep G

The children have had a wonderful start to their first year at school. This term we have explored the numbers from 1 to 10 by identifying, making connections and writing the numerals. During our shared/guided reading we have focused on the orientations of print, sound letter relationships, recognition of upper and lower case letters and identifying some frequently used words. In writing the children are exploring how to write a simple sentence using a capital letter and a full stop.

Our children engage in three sessions of developmental play each week. Through play children develop fine and gross motor skills, creativity and imagination. Engaging in appropriate play-based experiences will support the development of the children’s communication skills, persistence and resilience while also supporting their ability to successfully work in teams.

Wishing everyone a very Happy Easter and look forward to seeing you in term 2.

1H

Wow! One whole term has gone by and boy have we been working hard now that we are in year 1. Some of our highlights have been the annual Joey’s fun run, designing a musical instrument for Science, a visit from the Arts Council, National Anti-bullying Day and Grandparent’s Day/Feast of St. Joseph.

We’ve well earned a holiday and then will return well-rested and ready for a busy term 2. Have a happy and holy Easter break.

From Mrs Hannah and 1H

1C

We’ve had lots of fun with learning during Term One. Some topics we have engaged with includes; Jesus’ Baptism, how sound travels, characters in picture books, counting, 2D shapes, measurement, self-portraits and the Daniel Morcombe Curriculum. A favourite activity within the classroom setting is learning our spelling words using hands-on resources (play-doh, stamps, rainbow writing, window writing and iPads).

2F

Term 1 has come to an end and here are some of our memorable moments.

Participating in our school fun run.

In HASS we have been learning about life in the past and comparing it to how our lives are today. Toys and games have interested us.

We have also been writing some What am I? Riddles for our parents to guess various objects from the past and present. Here are some. Can you guess what we are?

What am I?

I used to be popular getting people around from place to place.
I used coal because it was the only way to make me go.
I take time to get up speed.
You go to a station to get on me.

I am a steam train.

What am I?
I have a handle so you can carry me.
I have a flame that lights the house when it is dark
I get smaller by the flame burning.

I am a candle.

What am I?
I am made of bricks so it does not burn.
I am used to boil water and cook food.
I have to build a fire to work.
You find me in the kitchen.

I am a fireplace

What am I?
I have boxes and people jump in them.
I have numbers 12345678910.
You need chalk to draw me.
I am a game.
You need a rock for throwing into the box.

I am hopscotch.

What am I?
I am used to speak to people.
I have a handle that you put to your mouth and ear.
I have a cord so if the handle falls off it won’t fall on the floor and break.

I am an old telephone.

What am I?
I am used for cleaning clothes.
I am made of steel and wood.
I am used by hand.
You rub clothes on me.

I am an old washtub and washboard.

What am I?
I am used for calling people.
I have a screen.
I have games that people can play.
People can type thing on me.

I am a mobile phone.

We hope you enjoyed some of our riddles.
Mrs Farr and the students of 2F

2M Week 9 Prayer Assembly

Last week 2M presented their Prayer Assembly based on God’s great Commandment ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’.

But ‘Who is my neighbour?’
Our neighbour is the person who is excluded from the game.
Our neighbour is the person who struggles with school work.
Our neighbour is person who is not very good at sport.
Our neighbour is the person who finds it hard to make friends.
Our neighbour is the person who always gets picked last.

Loving our neighbours means showing mercy and love towards everyone. Loving our neighbours means getting on together, looking after each other, treat others as we would like to be treated.

Jesus explains that to love God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength also means showing love and care to others- even those who are different from us.

As we reflected about God’s commandment, we pray:

Lord Jesus, be with our Community. Grant us Your peace and harmony. Gift us with compassion to better understand each other, wisdom and love to assist each other, and trust and patience to work and play peacefully together. Grant that our community will be accepting of each other, work together in unity, be selflessly dedicated to one another and to You.

3T

Wow, what a busy term we have had. This is a small snap shot of some of the experiences so far. We had a lovely morning with our grandparents celebrating our Grandparent’s Morning Tea.

We have been learning about aboriginal art and produced our own X-Ray art. Our class created a prayer assembly on the topic of forgiveness to share with the school community. Last week we constructed a Tippy Tap device, to join with the Year 4’s as part of Project Compassion, to raise awareness of being water wise.

We hope everyone has a happy and Holy Easter break.
From Mrs Tennyson and the students of 3T

3M

It’s the end of the first term! Wow, how quickly that time went. This term we’ve been busy getting to know each other and establishing routines as this is Miss McGinley’s very first year of teaching.

In the classroom, 3M have enjoyed learning about the benefits of meditation and how well it works to calm us down after busy lunch times running around and playing with friends. Miss McGinley is already so impressed with the initiation of 3M wanting to take time to calm their minds and relax their bodies.

We’ve also enjoyed participating in Project Compassion during Lent by building and running the ‘Tippy Tap’ alongside the year 4’s. 3M did such a wonderful job helping everyone in the school who came and participated to understand the meaning behind the Tippy Tap and the importance of making people aware of how lucky we are to have access to the resources we do.

3M and Miss McGinley very much look forward to the coming year and wish all families a safe and happy Easter break.

Yr 4 Term 1 Done and Dusted

And so we see the back of our first term of year 4. What an amazing time we have had. Last week we took our turn at walking in another’s footsteps whilst studying the Caritas Message.

Firstly, we built and used a Tippy Tap which is a hand washing tool used in countries that don’t have fresh running water. We had around 200 students visit us and use the Tippy Tap over two days. Both our Yr 3 and Yr 4 helpers explained to the visiting students how important washing hands is for good health.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjBlglCXpqI

One of our Yr 4 students Chloe Bragg then went home and persuaded her dad to help her build her own Tippy Tap and helped educate her family about the importance of washing hands. Well done Chloe!

Then we as a class had a go at seeing if we could live on the small amount of rice some families have to exist on. We only had to last 10 mins while these families have to last 24hrs on a small amount of rice. The conversations had after this experiment were very interesting. Our students became very aware that they had the ability to fill up with lunch after the experiment whilst children their age in some parts of the world could only fill up with unclean water.

We wish you all a Happy and Holy Easter and hope your holidays bring you joy and peace. See you back bright and sparkly ready for great learning journeys next term.
