FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Well done to our Semester Two Academic Award winners last Monday morning. It was fantastic to see the growth in the number of Gold, Silver, Bronze, Maroon and Navy awards achieved by our students from our Semester One assembly with over 160 awards being handed out. Many students came very close to fulfilling the set criteria for the awards, but just missed out. Next year, I hope for continued growth and that all of our ongoing students continue to persevere and be determined in striving to take home one of these awards in 2019.

It was fantastic to see so many of our Joeys community gather together for last week’s Presentation Night. Many thanks to everyone who came along and braved the sweltering conditions to support our students and help make it such a memorable evening. A special thank-you to Shelly & Tim Harkin who worked tirelessly to ensure the court was washed clean, well-lit and that the grounds were spick and span. Congratulations to the worthy recipients of this year’s awards and also to all of the students who performed on the night. Many thanks also to the staff who put in much hard work and preparation for the event. The commitment from both our staff and students was evident in the quality of all the performances as well as the smiles on everybody’s faces.

Drawing our school year to a close will be our End of Year Mass this Friday, 7th December. We will be celebrating with a whole school Mass commencing at 9:00am. The Mass not only provides us the opportunity of farewelling our Year 6 students for the final time, it will also incorporate the induction of our student leaders for the 2019 school year.

We must also be aware that we share Friday’s Mass with the Parish so I request that we leave the parking spaces directly outside the church vacant for the use of our parishioners.

Please remember that during all of these celebrations that we not use the parking in the mall car park as retailers in the mall have previously complained that there is no parking for their patrons. In an effort to try and alleviate these parking issues we will be making parking available on the grassed area beyond the end of the Multi-Purpose Area during both tonight’s and Friday’s celebrations.

Unlike past years, class lists will no longer be displayed in their entirety in the windows of the Media/Drama room. This year your child’s classroom teacher for 2019 will be emailed directly to the address provided in your parent information. This will be done before the end of the school year. For those who made the time to see me with specific requests for 2019, I was able to facilitate these to the best of my ability at the time, not knowing my full staffing roster for 2019.

Officially school concludes at 3:00pm on Friday, though some parents have enquired about students going home early. Students are able to go home with their own parents or guardians following Mass. Students wanting to leave with another child’s parent must have written permission to do so from their parents.

A reminder that as Christmas draws close we have exciting news. The Lights of Christmas 2018 will be on again consisting of a fantastic light show that will use the external facade of St Joseph's Cathedral as a canvas to display animations as well as Christmas themed slides. The display will be bigger and better than last year and will run from 17th to 23rd December.

The school office will be open next week from Monday the 10th till Friday the 14th of December with our Finance Secretary, Megan Crosthwaite available for all those parents who wish to finalise their school fees for 2018. The office will then close for the Christmas period and reopen on Monday the 21st of January.

Don’t Forget …

  • Year 6 Graduation Mass, Wednesday 5th December @ 6:00pm
  • Year 6 Fun Day, Thursday 6th December
  • End of Year Mass/2019 Leadership Induction, Friday 7th December @ 9:00am
  • St Joseph’s school office closes for holiday break, Friday 14th December
  • The Lights of Christmas, 17-23 December @ St Joseph’s Cathedral
  • St Joseph’s school office reopens for 2019, Monday 21st January
  • 2019 School year commences, Tuesday 29th January @ 8:35am

I hope you have a great last week and a happy, holy and most of all safe Christmas holiday break. We look forward to working with you again in 2019.

Regards
Bernard Fitzgerald
St. Joseph’s PA Acting Principal

SPORTING NEWS

Every year, an award is presented to the best performing cricketer from the Rockhampton Primary School Sports District. This is the “Rockhampton School Player of the Year” trophy.

For over 25 years, this award has been presented, and sponsored by Robert Schwarten and the Schwarten family.

The award is given to the player who has represented to the highest lever, performed at that level more than anyone else and has shown great character, attitude and behaviour while away.

The recipient this year represented the Capricornia 10 – 12 yrs Boys cricket team at the recent State championships in Townsville. He collected 8 wickets across the 4 games that he bowled in and made 91 runs at an average of 22.75 runs per game.

Congratulations to Year 5 student, Zac Joyce.

CURRICULUM NEWS

BOOKLISTS

2019 booklists have been sent home. Please check with your child that they have received it. If you can’t locate it, we have spares in the office. Once again Capricorn Educational Resources (CER) in Alexandra Street have offered to give a generous amount of money back to the school when Joeys parents purchase their school supplies from them. Of course you are able to purchase your child’s supplies from wherever you wish however the ladies from CER guarantee supply of the correct equipment. Teachers put a significant amount of thought and time into developing the booklists so I ask that you provide your child with all the equipment listed. If purchasing from CER you are welcome to drop your order into school before the end of Term or take it directly to CER.

SEMESTER 2 REPORT CARDS

Semester 2 reports were posted to Parent Lounge yesterday. Report Cards will no longer be printed and sent home to parents - they need to be accessed through your parent lounge account. The link to parent lounge is:

CLASSROOM NEWS

Prep

Prep are in full swing as we get ready to celebrate the end of term and Christmas with our loved ones. Prep students have completed many activates and learnt about the true meaning of Christmas. The students have loved exploring the story of The Nativity and practicing their song for the Presentation Night. The students were also gifted a storybook each from Rotary to celebrate their achievements during their first year of school.

Some of our other highlights from the year include:

Jacob: My best memory of Prep is when we went to the Pilbeam Theatre to see ‘Josephine Wants to Dance’.

Mason: My favourite part of Prep was getting the new playground.

Ella: My favourite part of Prep has been learning all new things.

Hunter: My favourite part of Prep is learning to read.

The Prep’s are very excited about what 2019 holds for them as big Grade 1 students. Thank you to all of the Prep families for all of your support during 2018. Merry Christmas to you all.

The Prep Team

Yr 1

As the year draws to a close, we’ve taken some time to reflect upon the amazing things we have done throughout the year. Some of the highlights have been Under 8’s Day, the Science expo with the astronomy evening, hosting the Mother’s Day pamper party, our Presentation Night performance of Happiest Christmas Tree and the Athletic and Swimming carnivals.

Whist we’ve certainly grown in height and maturity, we’ve also grown academically and spiritually. We are enjoying our last week of Year 1, before we take a much needed rest and are ready to embark on Year 2.

Farewell from Miss Ferguson

What a fantastic Presentation Night! Well done to all the Year 3’s for a great Aussie Christmas celebration! Thank you so much to the parents who helped to make costumes and props, particularly to Mrs Roberts and Clare Austin who helped make our Rusty Holden Ute!

Thanks to all my students and parents for your kind messages. It was a very hard decision to leave Joey’s. Even though I have only been at this school for 2 years I have experienced the ‘Joey’s Way’ and the community spirit at this school.

I hope you all have a safe and fun Christmas!

We have had very interesting lessons in science where we are the taxonomist; a person who classifies new species discovered. Even though it was a little messy, we really enjoyed making our clay bowls.

We had a cracker of a time at the Christmas presentation night in our singlet, shorts and thongs singing about an Aussie Christmas.

We are very excited for open learning next year in year 4.

FROM THE COUNSELLOR

The school holidays are here and it’s the time for getting back to the basics of having fun together, laughing together, spending time with each other and building memories….. taking a moment to be with each other, to rest, relax, recharge and reconnect.

As the school year comes to a close and you are all feeling very busy and overscheduled and looking forward to some time together, it can be a juggle to get everything done and enjoy it at the same time.

This time of year you can feel frazzled, tired, hot, cranky or have sad moments remembering those special people and loved ones not with you this Christmas.

End of year can mean so many different things to many of you …… and yet it can be a moment to remember who is important and how we carve out time and space to spend precious moments with those special people in our lives.

The holidays can be a way to break out of the routine and slow down, find space to just be together as a way of reconnecting with each other.

As humans we are wired to find connection with others, through talking, play, hugs, stories, board games and to savour the moment and listen to each other and our kids.

I hope that your break has moments when you can sit and snuggle together, talk over the dinner table, play a board game, listen to your child’s story, look at old photos and remember to reconnect and recharge yourself and your loved ones. Relationships are built over moments which create memories, and being present in those moments allows you to savour them.

Be kind to yourselves and each other
