FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Thank you to those members of the community who took part in last week’s Catholic Education student protection survey. The data collected from these surveys will be crucial in continuing to provide the safest possible educational opportunities for our children moving forward.

At this point in time we have a number of families with outstanding fees in 2018.
I would appeal to all those families to please make time to visit me and continue to prioritise the relationship between both the school and the home. While the school continues to strive in providing the best possible opportunities for our students to access the curriculum in a faith filled way, I ask that families also continue to honour their commitment to the school. When fees are not paid, it makes it difficult to resource the school to the best of our ability which affects our whole school community. I especially urge those with students completing Year 6 this year to address this situation before moving on to high school. Your consideration of this difficult situation is much appreciated.

A reminder that this is the last week to see me if you have any class requests for your child in 2019. The teaching staff and the Leadership Team will be meeting and finalizing class lists on Tuesday the 6th of November.

This week I have tried to include a fairly comprehensive list of important dates for the remainder of the school year. Please take the time to put them into your family calendar.

Weekend Mass Time change to 6:30pm

Fr Frank is commencing holidays at the end of October, so necessary changes need to be made to the mass times on Saturday evenings. To enable Fr Marcel to celebrate a Vigil Mass at OLHC and Holy Family, the consensus of the members of the Parish Pastoral Council was that Mass times be 5pm at Holy Family and 6:30pm at OLHC. These changes have taken effect.

Sunday Mass times will remain unchanged.

Sacramental Program

Would you like your child to take the next steps in their faith journey?

CURRICULUM NEWS

DAY FOR DANIEL

Last Friday we participated in Day for Daniel. Thank you to everyone who participated. We had a large proportion of both students and staff wearing red shirts to help promote the important message of child safety.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of comprehension.

Strategy – Determine and Analyse Author’s Purpose and Support with Text

During this strategy, readers identify why the author wrote a text, by giving specific examples from the text to support the reader’s inference. This strategy helps deepen understanding for how to read and comprehend the text. Readers infer the meaning of the text based on the author’s purpose for writing it, which may be to persuade, inform or entertain.

Spelling:

Activity: Word Sort

Divide a piece of paper into however many patterns you have in spelling this week. For example: if you are learning about ‘el’ and ‘le’ endings, divide your paper into two sections, and label the pattern at the top of each section. Have someone read the words to you and write them in the appropriate column. Check your work after you finish.

Example:

le
table

el
funnel
