FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Well done to both our Year 6 students and staff who put on a wonderful school disco last Thursday evening. As I was unable to make the disco due to dealing with my current injury, I am appreciative of both Georgia Agius and Kelson Tennyson for stepping into the void and DJing on the night. I would also like to acknowledge both the leadership of the Year 6 students and the excellent behaviour of our P-5 students made it a wonderful night.

This week we farewell Ann McCutcheon and Gisele Vaz De Miranda as they take some well-deserved long service leave for first two weeks of Term 4. With that I am pleased to announce that Mrs Andrea Rutherford and Mrs Alice Wayman will both re-join the Joey’s staff during this time. I am sure you will make them feel welcome on their return.

Good luck to our Year 6 students taking part in the Catholic Schools Touch Challenge against Catholic Primary Schools from Gladstone, Yeppoon, Rockhampton and schools from out west this Wednesday at the touch fields.

Congratulations to our netballers who travelled to Bundaberg last week to compete in the Primary Schools Netball State Cup. The students were well prepared by both Mrs Tranberg and Miss Agius and represented our school with much pride coming 13th in the entire State losing their only game to the eventual State champions. A big thank-you also to Mrs Brennan and Trudy Agius who both volunteered their time to be our bus driver and designated umpire during the carnival.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank all of the St Joseph’s community for their support and understanding last Friday. It is also with great appreciation that I thank the communities of St Anthony’s, St Mary’s, Emmaus and the Catholic Education Office who provided the human resources that allowed our staff the opportunity to support Ann and the O’Sullivan family. This is another example of just how wonderful it is to be a part of the Catholic Education family.

Finally to all of our families, have a happy and safe holiday break.

Don’t Forget …

  • School recommences for Term 4, Monday 8th of October
  • School swimming begins Week 2 of Term 4
  • TCC Year 6 orientation half day, Tuesday 23rd October
  • 2019 Prep Orientation Day, Thursday 18th October

Have a great week and I look forward to working with you in Term 4.

Regards
Bernard Fitzgerald

QLD Primary Schools Cup

Nine of our girls travelled to Bundaberg last Friday to compete in the QLD Primary Schools Netball Cup. Across a field of 79 teams these girls played extremely well. On Day One, the girls played five games with very short turn around between each game. They were defeated (by 7 goals) in only one of these five games and won the other four convincingly. Only the top team from each of the 12 pools was taken forward to contest the cup in Division One. As a result the best our girls could place was 13th, and that they did. On Day Two, the girls faced up for another five games. Of these games, they drew one and won the other four games, again by high margins.

During the two days, the girls ran their hearts out, worked together as a tight knit team, applauded their opponents, and celebrated their own successes and all with great poise and sportsmanship. We congratulate them on their excellent performance and are very proud of their dedication and efforts as members of Joeys.

Many thanks to our wonderful supporters who travelled to cheer on the girls. The contributions of the parents through tireless fundraising, getting their girls to team training each week and assistance with the set up and transportation of equipment is greatly appreciated. Your unwavering support for these girls is a testament to the spirit of Joeys. Thank you!

CURRICULUM NEWS

Under 8s Day

Last Thursday we celebrated our annual Under 8s Day. It is always an enjoyable experience for the students and this year was no exception. I’d like to thank all the staff who worked tirelessly to prepare and present the activities for the students, the P&F for the sausage sizzle and the many volunteers who attended on the day. It is another way the Joey’s community comes together and supports each other.

I’d like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe, relaxing and enjoyable holiday break and look forward to a productive Term 4.

Prep

As the term reaches its end we are so excited by how much the prep students have learned so far in the prep year.

Developing letter and numeral knowledge to practicing sight words and using them in their sentences!

It was fantastic to put down the pencils and to celebrate Under 8’s day on Thursday and they all had a lovely time visiting the different activities set up. Prep were all systems go on the pasta necklace with play activities and the sausage sizzle was a huge hit at the conclusion of the morning.

This week we are also having “Talk like a Pirate” Day where we will make our pirate hat, explore some pirate literature and complete a mapping activity to locate some buried treasure!!

We wish you all a lovely break over the holidays and can’t wait to see you all back for Term 4 of Prep, our busiest term yet!

Yr 3

What a fantastic under 8’s day! I think I had more fun than the kids! It was my first under 8’s day and sadly the year 3’s last one.

3F has been working on an activity we call ‘dressing up a sentence’. The students take a boring sentence and turn it into an exciting sentence. First we identified the noun in the sentence and came up with different ways in which we can describe it better.

Hanna: The baby smiled.
The shy baby named Jessie smiled at everyone in the lounge room.

Paige: The fireman yelled.
The wrinkly old fireman called Steve yelled at the people in the burning house to jump.

Jack: The frog jumped.
The huge blue frog with big eyes called ‘Unspeakable’, jumped off a cliff.

Kobe: The girl cried.
Violet, the sad and sulking girl, sulked for sadness on the moon.

Adyn: The bird flew away.
Fat Face the bird, flew over a powerline in the Mario world.

Marley: The policeman drove.
The fat policeman quickly raced to the car crash in the park.

Adyn: The bat flew.
The very big, old, ugly bat named Alex is flying over to the shops to eat.

Yr 4

We have had a very busy term in Year 4 learning, creating and presenting numerous different things. Here are some of the highlights:

Flynn: My favourite thing in term three was the division with Mrs Mooney.
Isabelle B: Doing a puppet show and inter school sports.
Liahna: Kicking it maths sessions.
Samuel G: My favourite thing this term is doing the games for science.
Thomas: Staying back with the teachers and the nine-year olds and doing sport with Mrs McCutcheon!
Matilda: My favourite thing was going to Samsung cup and sitting on the bench if someone got hurt and watching them do netball.
Jaiden: I loved the First Fleet HASS assessment.
Trey: HASS because I can relate to the subject and I have a lot knowledge.
Hudson: Maths rotations and football for school.
Chace: I loved the art we did and the science.

We hope you all have a fantastic break and come back ready for a busy fourth term.

Mrs McCutcheon, Mrs Mooney and Year 4

INTERSCHOOL GYMKHANA

The 2018 Interschool Gymkhana was a huge success. St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School PA was well represented with 6 riders in total and placing 2nd overall.

Chase Everingham came 1st, Hugh Everingham 2nd, with Ariana Upton riding well in the Year 6 age group. We wish all of these riders all the best as the move forward representing their chosen Secondary Schools in 2019. Ride well and stay safe.

Jackson Dixson took out 3rd place in the Year 5 age group. Caitlyn Thompson, Year 1 and Danielle Thompson, Year 3 also rode very well winning a number of ribbons on the very dry and dusty day.

A big thank you to Matt Thompson for putting up the tent so we had some much needed shade on what was also a very hot day for all riders and spectators.

Also another special thankyou to past student and Practising Teacher Paige Miller who came out and helped make our horses look their best, we really appreciated you giving up your Sunday to do this.

Lastly, thank you to all Parents for putting the time and effort in to making this day so special. This was our 9th Year of competition and we are looking forward to continuing the tradition the next year.
