While he awaits medical treatment over the next fortnight, Bernard will work mostly from home and his time at school will be in a limited capacity.

During this time, if you have any concerns please contact Mrs Deanne Senini (APC) or Mrs Bernadette Brennan (APRE). We wish Bernard well as he rests and all the best for a speedy recovery.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word – This Saturday

Our Lady Help of Christians is starting Children’s Liturgy of the Word on the first Sunday (Saturday evening) of each month. LOW is a ritual for the proclamation of God’s Word with Children appropriate to their understanding. At the commencement of Mass the children are taken out of the church to the Media room and are exposed to the readings of the day with a child friendly explanation, some songs and follow up activities.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word dates for the rest of the year are:

Saturday November 3rd @ 6:00pm
Saturday December 1st @ 6:00pm

NO Peer Support this week

Socktober

Socktober is an initiative of Catholic Mission which aims to ‘sock it to poverty’ to help some of the most needy and vulnerable children in the world have better opportunities in life and a hope-filled future.

This October, Joey’s will engage in a variety of activities to raise awareness and help ‘strike out’ at social issues such as poverty, child labour, homelessness and lack of education opportunities.

Some ideas for next term include:

  1. Hold a Crazy Sock Day and encourage the students to wear crazy socks all over their body. What is the most creative way they can wear socks?
  2. Pass the Sock Around as a fundraiser in our classrooms.
  3. Have a competition to see which student can create the best sock puppet, then hold a puppet show.

These are just ideas at this stage, but it’s time to start keeping an eye out for crazy and interesting socks!

SPORTING MATTERS

Good Luck Girls

Nine of our girls are heading off to Bundaberg this Friday for the 2018 Primary Schools Netball Cup. The Cup is a two day carnival consisting of over 80 teams from all around the state. This is a round robin format within a pool. Performance at the end of Day 1 determines pool ranking into division pools to contest finals. We wish the team and their coaches, Mrs Tranberg and Miss Agius all the best for a great tournament.

Special thanks must be made to Mrs Trudy Agius who volunteers her time to travel with the Joey’s girls as the team umpire.

CQ Bulls All Schools Touch Championship

Last Friday, Joeys had four teams compete in this championship.

Season C Interschool Sport

Nominations for Season C sport are due this Friday. Students will be made aware of their teams next week in preparation for the commencement of the season in Week 1 Term 4.

CURRICULUM NEWS

UNDER 8s MORNING (Prep – Yr 3)

Our annual Under 8’s morning will take place at St Joey’s on Thursday (13th September). This is a day where we celebrate the learning and development of our younger students. The day will begin with a short liturgy in the multi-purpose area. Following the liturgy the children will be free to investigate the various hands on activities prepared by our Prep – Year 3 teachers. Parents are most welcome to attend this part of the day. After first break students will head back to class where they will complete activities with their class for the rest of the day.

Students in Prep to Year 3 are invited to come along to this day in free dress. It is essential that this free dress consists of clothing which is sun safe (no sleeveless shirts), a school hat and fully enclosed shoes. If you are able to assist your child’s teacher on the day please let them know as soon as possible. If you have any questions about this day please don’t hesitate to see me.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of accuracy.

Strategy – Skip the Word, Then Come Back

When students come to words they don’t know they can skip over the word until they come to the end of the sentence or passage. Then readers back up and read the sentence again, using the first letter or letters of the skipped word and their context clues to decode the unknown word.

Spelling:

Activity: Words without vowels

Write your spelling words in a list but replace all the vowels with a line. Then go back to the beginning of your list and see if you can fill in the correct missing vowels.

CLASSROOM NEWS

Yr 4

Well yet again the term has flown by. In Year Four we have been very busy investigating the First Fleet and its arrival at Botany Bay. As a cumulating task, the students were asked to present their new-found knowledge with us in a creative way. We had a variety of books, posters, a puppet show, a set of dioramas and some students even tested out their green screening skills. It was fantastic to see everyone enthusiastic about demonstrating just how much we have learnt about The First Fleet.

In Science, we have been exanimating how different forces work in the world around us. We have been taking part in lots of different experiments that demonstrate the different forces of push and pull, the effect of a large force or a soft force and the amazing capability of gravity. Over the next 2 weeks we will be constructing our own games that demonstrate a number of different forces. We are looking forward to sharing them with you next week.

A big thank you to all of the Year 4 students and parents for taking part in our epic Book Week idea. We all looked fantastic and definitely sparked a lot of interest on the day.

Mrs McCutcheon, Mrs Mooney and Year 4.

Have a great day.
