FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Last week’s Science Expo was, from all accounts, a huge hit. I apologise for my absence as I was quite ill through last week. Congratulations to all the students and their parents who took part and presented on the night as well as all involved with the Year 1 astronomy demonstration that was also hugely successful (until the oval sprinklers turned on unexpectedly). We are very appreciative of Leanne Voss and the judges that attended from CQU University and congratulate them on the development of a new educational science app that was launched at Joey’s last week. Also, well done to our APC, Mrs Deanne Senini who has put in a tremendous amount of work into both Science and Book Week celebrations. Her educational vision has seen some great educational opportunities for our students come to fruition this year. I love to see our students excited about learning.

This week we celebrate Book Week and as always, we will culminate our annual celebration by having a costume character parade. I can’t wait to see the famous literary characters and hope that we have some cool weather tomorrow as we will have a very sweaty Principal by mid-morning.

Well done to our Capras Cup team who competed last Saturday playing four games in very hot conditions. The team did very well placing 4th overall in Rockhampton. Thank you to all of the players and their parents for giving up a major part of their weekend to set up, support and represent our school with such pride. It was a very tiring yet enjoyable day.

After four weeks of Prep interviews, I am delighted to have met so many families who are seeking St Joseph’s values as an integral part of their children’s educational journey. A reminder that the first round of Prep offers for 2019 will be mailed out this Friday, August 24th.

It was lovely to see our students and their families come and celebrate our Children’s Mass at OLHC last Saturday evening. After mass we were able to share a light supper of tasty laksa soup prepared by the NET Team and the MX Youth Group. It was a lovely evening even though I had to have many glasses of water as I mistakenly did not get served from the ‘mild’ sauce pan. Well done to our NET Team.

Best of luck to our netball teams who will be taking part in grand finals this Friday. All teams have worked hard all season and I am sure our lovely bunch of girls will represent our school with great pride. Go Joeys!

Don’t Forget …

  • Book Week, 20th – 24th Aug.
  • Book Week costume parade, Thursday 23rd Aug @ 10:40am
  • Prep 2019 1st offers mailed out, Friday 24th Aug.
  • Season B Interschool Sports Grand Final Day, Friday 24th Aug

Have a great week.

SCIENCE WEEK EXPO

Last Thursday evening we held our Science Week Expo. I’d like to thank all the students who put in an entry. I was extremely impressed with the time and effort put into the presentation of the projects as well as the way the students were able to discuss their project.

The judges from CQUni were also very impressed with the quality of the projects. A large part of the marks given by the judges were based on how well the students could explain the science behind their project.

Congratulations to our winners:

Prep – Year 2 category

  • First place: Tom Compognoni – speed of plant growth
  • Second place: Humbal Salam - water filtration

Year 3-4 category

  • First place: Keely Brook – solar powered pet cooler
  • Second place: Hugh Ballinger – beehive made from recycled material

Year 5 -6 category

  • First place: Breanna Gear – environmentally friendly pest control
  • Second place: Nick Thompson – biodegradable fishing hook

BOOK WEEK

Every year St Joseph’s celebrates book week. This year we will be celebrating book week with two official events. The first one is our annual character dress up day. All students from Prep – Year 6 are invited to come to school dressed as a character from a book. We will hold a parade in the MPA where all students can show off their outfits. This parade will start at 10:30am on Thursday 23rd August.

Our second event is our biannual Joey’s in Jamas evening (also on Thursday 23rd August). This evening is held in the school library and all students and their parents are invited to come along in their pyjamas and spend some time reading books together. PLEASE NOTE – THERE IS NO OFFICIAL TEACHER SUPERVISION SO ALL STUDENTS NEED A PARENT WITH THEM. This evening will begin at 5pm and conclude at 6:30pm. You are welcome to come along at any time during that 90 minute time slot.

UNDER 8s MORNING

Our annual Under 8’s morning will take place at St Joey’s in Term 3 on Thursday 13th September. This is a day where we celebrate the learning and development of our younger students. The day will begin with a short liturgy in the multi-purpose area. Following the liturgy the children will be free to investigate the various hands on activities prepared by our Prep – Year 3 teachers. Parents are most welcome to attend this part of the day. After first break students will head back to class where they will complete activities with their class for the rest of the day. Students in Prep to Year 3 are invited to come along to this day in free dress. It is essential that this free dress consists of clothing which is sun safe (no sleeveless shirts), a school hat and fully enclosed shoes. If you are able to assist your child’s teacher on the day please let them know as soon as possible. If you have any questions about this day please do not hesitate to see me.

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE

You should have received a letter explaining the 2018 Premier’s Reading Challenge. Every child is invited to participate in this challenge and read or experience a number of books over the next few months. The challenge runs from Monday 14 May until Friday 24 August.

This year the Premier has challenged all school students from Prep to Year 2 to read or experience 20 books, Years 3 and 4 to read 20 books and Years 5 to 9 to read 15 books. Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories or reading picture books.

Every student who completes the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of fluency.

Strategy – Use Punctuation to Enhance Phrasing and Prosody

Clustering words together by using our knowledge of the spoken patterns in the English language and using punctuation enhances our understanding of what we read. Learning to read in phrases is important. The meaning of what is read is embedded in the chunk of words we read, not just in the isolated words themselves. The order and the way words are put together to make a sentence and then a paragraph create the meaning. It is important for readers to practice reading fluently in phrases.

Spelling:

Activity: Words within words
Write each spelling word and then write at least two words made from the same letters. For example: slide, side, lie, lid, led
