Newsletter Articles
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Welcome to Catholic Education Week 2018. In beginning this week’s newsletter, I would like to take the time to congratulate the Emmaus community on the wonderful production of their school musical, ‘The Wizard of Oz’. I was lucky enough to attend one of the performances and was thrilled to see the number of past Joey’s students who were on stage performing. Well done to all the Emmaus community who were involved, it was outstanding rendition of one of the most treasured films of all-time.
Through the week it was great to hear Joeys get a shout out on the radio for our participation in the ‘Give Me 5 For Kids’ charity event. The 2018 goal was to try and double the $17,000 raised in 2017. It was wonderful news to receive an email through the week with the audio attached of the on-radio reveal and I am again overwhelmed to be a part of an organization that is so generous. In 2018, GM5FK raised an incredible $45,252.69 that will go straight to the children’s wards at the Rockhampton & Gladstone Hospitals. This is truly great news and it was a wonderful event to take part in for our local community.
We have an extremely busy time coming up as we will be holding another school disco this Term on Thursday the 6th of September in Week 8. Also, our 9-10 years rugby league players will be taking part in the upcoming Capras Cup competition at Rockhampton High School on Saturday, 18th of August from 9:00am till approximately 4:00pm. The team has been both trialing and training very hard in preparation for this event. The day then culminates in a Children’s Mass in OLHC church at 6:00pm. Even though this will be an extremely busy day, it would be lovely to see many of our community come along to celebrate Eucharist together.
Please note, the P&F will be hosting a meal deal to help support the NET team on Wednesday, 8th August 2018. For $6 you’ll receive some yummy spaghetti/pasta bolognaise, two pieces of garlic bread and a popper. A note will be sent home today (Wednesday 1st August 2018), with money to be returned by the following Monday 6th August 2018.
As a part of our Catholic Education Week, we will be holding our annual NAIDOC Day celebration this Thursday at school. Our school Indigenous Liaison Officer, Simone Giles has been working very hard on organising all of the different elements that make this celebration so wonderful. Remember, the P&F will be hosting a sausage sizzle for the students at lunchtime as a part of the celebration. The day will begin with a Prayer Assembly in OLHC church at 9:00am. All are welcome to attend.
Catholic Education Week will also culminate with a special mass held at St Joseph’s Cathedral this Saturday evening at 6:00pm. We will have some students attending, however it is open for anyone to attend. If students are attending, I ask that they wear their formal school uniform so we can all be identified as a part of our Joey’s school group.
Well Done to the students who represented our school at last week’s Rockhampton & District athletics carnival. Joeys won the Girls B Schools trophy and came second in the B Schools overall trophy by just 1 point. Well done to both students and staff, and best of luck to those moving on to further trials.
On a final note, I am super excited! I picked up my book week costume last weekend and luckily…… it fits. I hope it remains cool though, or we could have a pretty sweaty Principal on the microphone at our Annual Book Parade.

Peer Support – Promoting Harmony
This year in Peer Support the students are undertaking the Promoting Harmony module that focuses on defining individual and community values, build relationships and improve decision making skills. Values are tools we use to guide us through our lives. They assist us to decide what is right and how we should respond to different situations.
During this week’s session, children begin to think about what is a value and something they value in themselves. We recommend you talk to your children every week, as it will help to reinforce the concepts learned in each session.
St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Mass
Wednesday 8th August, is the feast day of St. Mary of the Cross Mackillop. She is the patron saint of our school as the founder of the Sisters of St. Joseph. To celebrate and recognise Mary’s achievements and dedication to the needs in her community and communities Australia wide, we are having a Mary MacKillop Portrait competition. Each year level will create portraits of St. Mary using different visual art mediums. These will be displayed around the school for everyone to enjoy.
Next Friday, 10th August we will share a special mass at 9:00am with the whole school and the parish. Everyone is welcome to join us for this Eucharistic celebration.

UNDER 8s MORNING
Our annual Under 8’s morning will take place at St Joey’s in Term 3 on Thursday 13th September. This is a day where we celebrate the learning and development of our younger students. The day will begin with a short liturgy in the multi-purpose area. Following the liturgy, the children will be free to investigate the various hands on activities prepared by our Prep – Year 3 teachers. Parents are most welcome to attend this part of the day. After first break, students will head back to class where they will complete activities with their class for the rest of the day. Students in Prep to Year 3 are invited to come along to this day in free dress. It is essential that this free dress consists of clothing, which is sun safe (no sleeveless shirts), a school hat and fully enclosed shoes. If you are able to assist your child’s teacher on the day please let them know as soon as possible. If you have any questions about this day please do not hesitate to see me.
SCIENCE WEEK CHALLENGE AND EXPO EVENING
Last week a note went home inviting students to participate in a Science Week challenge. This challenge is designed to be worked on at home with a parent’s assistance. If your child would like to participate, they need to return the form registering their project. These forms need to be returned to school by Friday, 3rd August. All entrants need to be available to present their project to a panel of judges at our Science Week Expo evening on Thursday 16th August. This evening will commence at 5pm. The P&F will be providing a sausage sizzle that night. Even if you are not participating in the project, you are welcome to come along and check out the projects on display.
BOOK WEEK
Every year St Joseph’s celebrates book week. This year we will be celebrating book week with two official events. The first one is our annual character dress up day. All students from Prep – Year 6 are invited to come to school dressed as a character from a book. We will hold a parade in the MPA where all students can show off their outfits. This parade will start at 10:30am on Thursday 23rd August.
Our second event is our biannual Joey’s in Jamas evening. This evening is held in the school library and all students and their parents are invited to come along in their pyjamas and spend some time reading books together. PLEASE NOTE – THERE IS NO OFFICIAL TEACHER SUPERVISION SO ALL STUDENTS NEED A PARENT WITH THEM. This evening will begin at 5pm and conclude at 6:30pm. You are welcome to come along at any time during that 90-minute time slot.
LITERACY CORNER
Reading:
Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of accuracy.
Strategy – Flip the Sound
Children use their knowledge of letter sounds to decode words by trying out or ‘flipping’ the different sounds a letter can make until they hear a word they recognise. For example, the letter ‘a’ can make a long a sound or a short a sound. Students can flip between both sounds to help them decode words.
Spelling:
Activity: Syllables
Write out your spelling words but put spaces in between the letters that break up the syllables. For example, el e phant. Students should recognise that each syllable contains a vowel.

CLASSROOM NEWS
Prep M
Prep students have had a wonderful start to what will be a very fun term, filled with lots of learning experiences. We are excited to be stepping up in our literacy and numeracy rotations, as we grow more confident in our abilities and routines.
During term 3 we will explore scripture, in particular, when Jesus, at the age of 12, was found worshipping at the Temple. English will have us diving into our favourite fairy tales such as Jack and the Beanstalk, The 3 Billy Goats Gruff and The 3 Little Pigs.
In Mathematics, we are exploring ordinal numbers and positional language and continuing to refine our number skills.
This term we are looking forward to our first school excursion to the Pilbeam theatre, Under 8’s Day, Book Week dress up day and many other exciting things. So hold on to your pencils – this term is going to be action packed!

JUNIOR TOUCH SEASON 2018
The Rockhampton Junior Touch Football Competition 2018 season commences on Saturday 11th August at the Cyril Connell Fields, North Rockhampton. The season runs through until November 2018 with breaks for school holidays.
The entire cost for the season is $60 per player with the third family member free. There is no extra to pay and the school will provide a playing shirt, which is to be returned to the team coach at the end of the season. We rely on parent volunteers to coach our teams.
Each team must have an adult coach or manager. If there are insufficient coaches - teams will not be nominated. St Joseph’s has traditionally had a strong representation in this sport and hopefully with your support, this year will be no exception. Please consider helping out, even if you are new to the sport, there is help available for coaches.
Coaches and Managers need to have a current Blue Card. If you are not the holder of a Blue Card, please pop into the school office and they will be able to assist you with this.
The age divisions are as follows:
U6 year born 2013, 2012
U8 year born 2011, 2010
U10 year born 2009, 2008
U12 year born 2007, 2006
Please make sure you have your child’s nomination forms with payments to Megan at the office before Friday the 3rd August, as teams need to be nominated by this date. Money must accompany your child’s nomination form.
Nominations received after this date will not be able to be processed.
Return your forms early to ensure you do not miss out.
If you have any queries please see Michelle Smith at St Joseph’s grade 1 on Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays.
