FROM THE PRINCIPAL

With the 2018 Challenge Cup coming to a close, I would just like to mention how proud I am of the efforts of both our netball & football teams. It was a great effort for our netballers & footballers to place 3rd & 7th respectively, however as always, what I am most proud of, was the way in which our students competed at the event. The school staff have always held high standards for the behaviour of our students and both teams met these expectations in great victories and disappointing defeats. It is also worth noting that both teams had very tough draws losing either round games or knockout games to the eventual winners in both sports.

Well done to the parents, students and especially Mrs Tranberg, Miss Agius, Mrs Agius, Mrs Brennan and Mr Nicholson for all your efforts in preparation for this event.

As you may be aware both the Year 2 position for Semester 2 and the APRE position for 2019 were advertised over the holiday break. As applications close, I will be working with the CEO in short listing these positions and holding interviews in the very near future.

This week we will also have a number of our staff attend a Management of Actual or Potential Aggression Training sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday or Thursday and Friday. This training helps us in dealing with potentially difficult or dangerous situations at school and continues to highlight that student protection is paramount here at St Joseph’s Park Avenue. This training also ensures that our staff have the appropriate Professional Development in order to provide a safe learning environment for our community.

Finally, best of luck to all of our students who will be representing Joeys at the Rockhampton & District Athletics this week at Emmaus College. I am sure you will have a great couple of days competing to the best of your ability.

Peer Support

We are starting our Peer Support sessions this week. The whole school will be working together in their Peer Support groups. These groups consist of 1 or 2 Year 6 Leaders with approximately 12-13 students from Prep to Year 5. Session One is about getting to know everyone in the group, setting rules for working well together and looking at what Peer Support is all about. We recommend that you talk to your children about Peer Support every week, as it will help them at home and at school.

Catholic Education Week – Next Week

Catholic Education Week will be celebrated across Queensland from 29 July – 4 August this year.

This annual event is held to promote the special ethos of Catholic schools and to highlight the great things that take place in Catholic schools every day. The theme for this year’s celebrations is: Discovering New Horizons. You may have seen the fence banner out the front of the school.

Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society. During Catholic Education Week 2018, Catholic education communities across Queensland are invited to celebrate how they are discovering new horizons.

There are 304 Catholic schools in Queensland that educate around 147,000 students and employ more than 19,000 teachers and staff, and most will celebrate Catholic Education Week in some way.

Our school is planning a number of activities during the week and we hope you are able to join in the celebrations with us. Each day classes will participate in a prayer meditation. On Thursday, we celebrate our annual NAIDOC celebration starting with a prayer assembly and on Friday, Miss Ferguson and 3F will lead the prayer assembly at OLHC at 11:30am.

An invitation is extended to school and parish communities to attend the 6.00pm Mass at St Joseph’s Cathedral on Saturday 4 August to celebrate Catholic Education Week. Bishop Michael will be presiding at the Mass. A light supper will be served following Mass. Everyone welcome.

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE

You should have received a letter explaining the 2018 Premier’s Reading Challenge. Every child is invited to participate in this challenge and read or experience a number of books over the next few months. The challenge runs from Monday 14 May until Friday 24 August.

This year the Premier has challenged all school students from Prep to Year 2 to read or experience 20 books, Years 3 and 4 to read 20 books and Years 5 to 9 to read 15 books. Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories or reading picture books.

Every student who completes the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier.

For more information about the Premier’s Reading Challenge, please visit:

UNDER 8s MORNING

Our annual Under 8’s morning will take place at St Joey’s in Term 3 on Thursday 13th September. PLEASE NOTE THIS DATE HAS CHANGED DUE TO AN UNEXPECTED CLASH. This is a day where we celebrate the learning and development of our younger students. The day will begin with a short liturgy in the multi-purpose area. Following the liturgy, the children will be free to investigate the various hands on activities prepared by our Prep – Year 3 teachers. Parents are most welcome to attend this part of the day. After first break, students will head back to class where they will complete activities with their class for the rest of the day. Students in Prep to Year 3 are invited to come along to this day in free dress. It is essential that this free dress consists of clothing, which is sun safe (no sleeveless shirts), a school hat and fully enclosed shoes. If you are able to assist your child’s teacher on the day please let them know as soon as possible. If you have any questions about this day please do not hesitate to see me.

SCIENCE WEEK CHALLENGE AND EXPO EVENING

Last week a note went home inviting students to participate in a Science Week challenge. This challenge is designed to be worked on at home with a parent’s assistance. If your child would like to participate, they need to return the form registering their project. These forms need to be returned to school by Friday, 3rd August. All entrants need to be available to present their project to a panel of judges at our Science Week Expo evening on Thursday 16th August. This evening will commence at 5pm. The P&F will be providing a sausage sizzle that night. Even if you are not participating in the project, you are welcome to come along and check out the projects on display.

BOOK WEEK

Every year St Joseph’s celebrates book week. This year we will be celebrating book week with two official events. The first one is our annual character dress up day. All students from Prep – Year 6 are invited to come to school dressed as a character from a book. We will hold a parade in the MPA where all students can show off their outfits. This parade will start at 10:30am on Thursday 23rd August.

Our second event is our biannual Joey’s in Jamas evening. This evening will be held in the school library and all students and their parents are invited to come along in their pyjamas and spend some time reading books together. PLEASE NOTE – THERE IS NO OFFICIAL TEACHER SUPERVISION SO ALL STUDENTS NEED A PARENT WITH THEM. This evening will begin at 5pm and conclude at 6:30pm. You are welcome to come along at any time during that 90-minute time slot.

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS

Please note that we have evaluated our processes regarding official parent teacher interviews. As you would be aware, we offered interviews early last term. A second set of interviews will be offered later this term. Please note that our school calendar states that interviews are occurring in the next couple of weeks. This is no longer the case. Information regarding dates for the next set of interviews will be sent out once dates are finalised.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of comprehension.

Strategy – Ask Questions throughout the Reading Process

Readers are actively involved in reading by asking themselves questions before, during and after reading thus increasing their comprehension of the text. Readers who ask questions during reading are actively engaged and thus tend to remember important details and information. While asking questions, readers are monitoring their comprehension.

Spelling:

Activity: Stick Words
Form your words using paddle pop sticks, toothpicks or pipe cleaners

JUNIOR TOUCH SEASON 2018

The Rockhampton Junior Touch Football Competition 2018 season commences on Saturday 11th August at the Cyril Connell Fields, North Rockhampton. The season runs through until November 2018 with breaks for school holidays.

The entire cost for the season is $60 per player with the third family member free. There is no extra to pay and the school will provide a playing shirt, which is to be returned to the team coach at the end of the season. We rely on parent volunteers to coach our teams.

Each team must have an adult coach or manager. If there are insufficient coaches - teams will not be nominated. St Joseph’s has traditionally had a strong representation in this sport and hopefully with your support, this year will be no exception. Please consider helping out, even if you are new to the sport, there is help available for coaches.

Coaches and Managers need to have a current Blue Card. If you are not the holder of a Blue Card, please pop into the school office and they will be able to assist you with this.

The age divisions are as follows:

U6 year born 2013, 2012
U8 year born 2011, 2010
U10 year born 2009, 2008
U12 year born 2007, 2006

Please make sure you have your child’s nomination forms with payments to Megan at the office before Friday the 3rd August, as teams need to be nominated by this date. Money must accompany your child’s nomination form.

Nominations received after this date will not be able to be processed.

Return your forms early to ensure you do not miss out.

If you have any queries please see Michelle Smith at St Joseph’s grade 1 on Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

SCHOOL BANKING

Please send your child’s banking book in so they can place it in the grey classroom-banking bag.

Therefore, we ask that all parents who generously volunteer their time to the school, either in a classroom or in the tuckshop, attend a very brief induction regarding maintaining a safe environment for the children of St. Joseph’s.

These sessions do not take long and are available after assembly on a Monday morning with Deanne Senini, and on Wednesday afternoons from 2:30pm - 3:00pm. Debbie Rooney will conduct induction sessions in the tuckshop, if you are helping in there.

Thanks
