FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Welcome to Week 10. At the culmination of our School Review and Improvement process in 2017, the Leadership Team in consultation with CEO came up with a School Improvement Plan for 2017-2019. As a part of this plan, the School Board and staff had to review our school’s Mission Statement so that it reflects more clearly the Catholic identity of our school while still emphasizing the three school Gospel values that we hold so dear. After much deliberation with all the stakeholders mentioned, it is my pleasure to present St Joseph’s Catholic School, Park Avenue’s new Mission Statement.

Inspired by St Mary of the Cross MacKillop and living our Gospel Values of self worth, personal responsibility and mutual acceptance, we strive to enrich our Catholic community by providing a learning environment that is empowering to all.

This new Mission Statement will be displayed in every classroom and office within the school and serves to guide us in our everyday actions. It is also very inclusive as it does not just mention that our Mission is solely aimed at our students, but is in fact very supportive of partnership, and that our family friendly school should always strive to be empowering to our students, parents, staff and the wider community.

Next Monday morning we will be hosting our inaugural St Joseph’s Semester Academic Awards. At the beginning of the year, I spoke with all of our students from Years 1-6 about what the requirements for all the various awards would be academically, and also what makes an ‘O’ for outstanding effort in the eyes of their teachers. The awards have been very purposefully made challenging to achieve and we are wanting to celebrate and recognize those students who have excelled in the field of academics as much as we celebrate their achievements in other fields. We are also aware that there may be very few Gold, Silver & Bronze awards given, but we hope that this initiative both grows and also motivates our students to be determined in striving to achieve academically.

For your information, the academic requirements are as follows;

Effort

Navy Certificate – Awarded for achieving a minimum of 4 O/Outstanding results in the 9 Key Learning Areas.

Academic Awards

Maroon Certificate – Awarded for achieving all A/VH & B/H results in all 9 Key Learning Areas.

Bronze Certificate – Awarded for achieving a minimum of 4 A/VH results across all Key Learning Areas.
(At least 1 must be in Religion, Mathematics or English & a passing grade required in all KLA’s)

Silver Certificate – Awarded for achieving 5 A/VH results across all Key Learning Areas.
(At least 2 must be in Religion, Mathematics or English & a passing grade required in all KLA’s)

Gold Certificate – Awarded for achieving 6 A/VH results across all Key Learning Areas.
(At least 3 must be in Religion, Mathematics and English & a passing grade required in all KLA’s)

If your child has achieved any of these standards, you will receive a letter of invitation sent home sometime this week. Hope to see you there.

This Friday the 22nd of June, St Joseph’s will be holding a Free Dress Day to support Give Me 5 for Kids. Give Me 5 for Kids is Southern Cross Austereo’s national fundraiser which has been supporting and raising funds for local children’s hospital wards across regional Australia for the last 20 years. The annual charity drive has raised almost $20 million nationally, and benefited over 40 children’s hospital wards. We ask that all students that take part bring in a gold coin donation with funds going to both the Rockhampton Mater Hospital and local children’s hospital wards. We do realise that we take part in Friday sport on this day, so our 10-12 years students will be asked to bring along their Joey’s sporting gear in order to represent the school later in the afternoon. Thank you in advance for supporting this worthy local cause that benefits our local community. Please remember that Free Dress should be both Sun Smart and safe to wear to school.

You may be aware that our Net Team has been visiting the school on a weekly basis. The National Evangelisation Team are here for 12 months on a voluntary basis working with the Northside Parish and the three Catholic Primary Schools and Catholic College. The NET Team desperately need donations to help them in their ministry. We are asking for either grocery cards (Coles, Woolies etc) or fuel cards that could help purchase household food for meals and put fuel into the team’s car that has been kindly donated to them for the year. With the Parish asking for these cards you will be assured that your donation is helping purchase basic weekly living expenses for the NET team. Any donated cards can be dropped into the school office and any amount would be greatly appreciated.

Don’t Forget …

  • Semester 1 Academic Awards Assembly, Mon 25th June @ 8:35am
  • Prep Enrolment Forms for 2019 due by end of term

Have a great week.

APRE REFLECTION

In Sunday’s Gospel, the mustard seed, the smallest of all the seeds, grows into the biggest shrub of all. We heard about seeds being planted, sprouting, growing, and being harvested, presumably for food. Then we heard about seeds being planted and growing into a large shrub which will provide shelter for the birds.

And Jesus said that ‘This is what the kingdom of God is like.’ Being a part of God's kingdom is a wonderful thing. It will provide us with spiritual nourishment and shelter. It is something to rejoice in. It is something of great value and we all need to do our bit to help nurture the seeds of faith in ourselves and in those around us. What are some ways we can do that?

SPORTING MATTERS

Bella Wins Bronze!

The 10-12yrs Girls Capricornia Basketball team played in the QLD School Sports Basketball Competition in Cairns 2 weeks ago (Thurs 31 May - Sun 3 June). It was a four-day competition, they played 9 games over 3 days and during those games only lost 2! The teams that they lost to ended up playing off in the Gold Medal game. The Cap girls then played Peninsula (the home team from Cairns) in the bronze medal game and won the game 42-27. It’s also very exciting that 6 of the girls in the team come from Rockhampton.

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE

You should have received a letter explaining the 2018 Premier’s Reading Challenge. Every child is invited to participate in this challenge and read or experience a number of books over the next few months. The challenge runs from Monday 14 May until Friday 24 August.

This year the Premier has challenged all school students from Prep to Year 2 to read or experience 20 books, Years 3 and 4 to read 20 books and Years 5 to 9 to read 15 books. Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories or reading picture books.

Every student who completes the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier.

For more information about the Premier’s Reading Challenge, please visit:

http://education.qld.gov.au/schools/readingchallenge/

SEMESTER ONE REPORT CARDS

As of this year report cards will only be able to be accessed through Parent Lounge. They will no longer be printed and sent home. Parents will be able to access these reports from Wednesday 27th June. To ensure you are able to access your child’s report card, I advise you ensure you can log on to Parent Lounge before that date. To access Parent Lounge you will need a username and password which was sent home to every parent earlier this year. If you do not have that information, please see the ladies in the office. Please go to the following link to access Parent Lounge:

https://202sjpa.rok.catholic.edu.au/parentlounge/

Additionally, if you do not have access to a computer or internet, please contact the office and we will make a computer available at school for you to view your child’s report.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of fluency.

Strategy – Adjust and Apply Different Reading Rates to Match Text

Readers use a constant rate for most texts they read but learn to use different speeds based on the types of tasks and their purpose for reading. Some readers have yet to learn how to adjust their reading rate to match their purpose for reading. Because these readers read everything at the same rate, they struggle to complete and comprehend lengthy readings.

Spelling:

Strategy: Spell-er-size

Spell your words as you do jumping jacks. For each letter do one jumping jack. Then do one last jumping jack as you say the whole word you just spelled.
