FROM THE PRINCIPAL
I am very happy to say that our Blessing & Opening went off without a hitch and was a very successful day. All of our distinguish guests complemented our students on the way they sang and especially on their behaviour and the way they conducted themselves during, before and after the ceremony.
Well done to all involved, especially to Bernadette Brennan for an event that has involved over 12 months in planning.
It was great to acknowledge the partnership Joeys has with CEO as well as Federal, State and Local government in helping to provide the best possible environment for our children to learn and grow.
I am sure you are all aware that the Rockhampton Show holiday is tomorrow, Thursday the 14th of June. Please be aware that we are back at school for Friday and that we are committed to Friday afternoon inter-school sport. As we are a small school, even a few children being unable to compete due to various reasons, will usually force us to forfeit games. This affects both our students and the school we are scheduled to compete against. Please make every effort to ensure that all students attend not only this Friday, but each and every school day. Remember, when it comes to your child’s education, every day counts.
Well done to all of the families that took part in Confirmation and First Holy Eucharist on the weekend. This is a huge step in the faith journey of many of our students as they take part in these two very special Sacraments. Congratulations to Beryl Mills, Bernadette Brennan and the rest of the team who have worked so hard to see this culminating celebration come to fruition.
I would like to take the time to thank Mrs. Bernadette Brennan once more as over the past seven days she has had to be instrumental in a Blessing & Opening, Confirmation & First Eucharist celebration and a two day Athletics Carnival. I am much appreciative of the support and effort I get from all of my staff but I remind myself that Bernadette initially put her hand up to apply for the Acting APRE role for 7 weeks. As that initial offer of support for both school and to myself begins to edge towards being in the role for 2 years, I thought it appropriate to thank Bernadette for the tremendous effort she has put into her work and especially into making the events of the last week so special for our Joeys community.
Don’t Forget …
- Rockhampton Show Holiday, Thurs 14th June
- Semester 1 Academic Awards Assembly, Mon 25th June @ 8:35am
- Prep Enrolment Forms for 2019 due by end of term
Have a great week.

APRE REFLECTION
Family members are often the last ones to allow us to change from who we have been to who we want to become. Unintentionally, family will sometimes continue to treat us as the child we were growing up in the family environment, despite our various accomplishments and changes in direction. Sometimes it’s easier to continue to treat someone we love as we have always treated them, rather than learning to adjust and accommodate a new way of relating. When you’re the one seeking to establish a new life or a new way of operating, family can appear to be ‘keeping you in a box’.
Today’s gospel paints a picture of Jesus’ family wanting him to play safe and remain the person they’ve known him to be, rather than growing into his ministry and preaching his challenging message. They can see that his actions are causing the authorities to pay attention and their reaction is to try to get Jesus to stay under the radar; to live small.
Q. How does the image of Jesus’ family seeking to keep
him in his place speak to your own experience?
Q. When have your actions been misunderstood and misrepresented?

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE
You should have received a letter explaining the 2018 Premier’s Reading Challenge. Every child is invited to participate in this challenge and read or experience a number of books over the next few months. The challenge runs from Monday 14 May until Friday 24 August.
This year the Premier has challenged all school students from Prep to Year 2 to read or experience 20 books, Years 3 and 4 to read 20 books and Years 5 to 9 to read 15 books. Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories or reading picture books.
Every student who completes the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier.
For more information about the Premier’s Reading Challenge, please visit the link below.

SEMESTER ONE REPORT CARDS
As of this year report cards will only be able to be accessed through Parent Lounge. They will no longer be printed and sent home. Parents will be able to access these reports from Wednesday 27th June. To ensure you are able to access your child’s report card, I advise you ensure you can log on to Parent Lounge before that date. To access Parent Lounge, you will need a username and password which was sent home to every parent earlier this year. If you do not have that information, please see the ladies in the office. Please go to the following link to access Parent Lounge.
https://202sjpa.rok.catholic.edu.au/parentlounge/
Additionally, if you do not have access to a computer or internet, please contact the office and we will make a computer available at school for you to view your child’s report.
LITERACY CORNER
Reading:
Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of comprehension.
Strategy – Blend Sounds; Stretch and Reread
Children should be taking the individual sounds of letters and blending them together to read a word accurately. Beginning readers often learn their sounds in isolation. The leap from knowing letter sounds to reading words can be daunting. Taking the isolated sounds and blending them together can be a first step to becoming a reader for many children. As they are blending the sounds together encourage them to listen for a word they might have heard before. This will help them work out the word they are stuck on.
Spelling:
Strategy: Scrabble
Use Scrabble tiles to spell out your spelling words. For a little extra maths practice figure out the value of each of your words.
