FROM THE PRINCIPAL

As you are reading this I would be hoping that our Blessing & Opening has gone off without a hitch. Due to time constraints, photos of our celebration will be in next week’s newsletter, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many parents and families who gave up some of their precious weekend to help during last Sunday’s working bee. To see so many ‘pitch in’ and generously contribute was absolutely fantastic. The Year 5 & 6 rooms, inside and out, as well as the MPA were absolutely sparkling after applying some spit and polish and a whole lot of elbow grease. Again, well done to all who were able to help.

Our official Skoolbag app undertook a mandatory upgrade over the weekend. A part of the upgrade, for student protective reasons will need you to create an account when you next log in. Please do this as soon as possible as the app is still the fastest, most reliable way for us to get information out to our school community.

Our school has also been upgraded with a new phone system.

The new St Joseph’s Catholic School, Park Avenue phone is 4994 8205.
The new phone number for the Kindy is 4994 9302.
The new phone number for the Outside School Hours Care is 4994 9303.

Please change these details in your contacts as soon as possible.

With an extremely popular first week along with a huge line to use the new basket swing, our new playground has shifted back into the existing routine in which it is used at lunchtime by our Prep – Year 2 students and OSHC after school. Please remember that the Playground should not be accessed either before or after school, as someone from the school staff does not supervise it during these times. Thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter.

If you are at school of a morning, breakfast club desperately needs help, as does the tuck-shop. Please, if you are able to help in the tuck-shop, even a few minutes of a morning would be greatly appreciated.

With the introduction of Parent Lounge in Term 1, paper copies of Fee Statements and Report Cards are no longer being mailed out. No physical Fee Statements or Report Cards will be mailed home in the future as you will be able to access both by logging into Parent Lounge.

For those families taking part in the Sacrament of Eucharist this weekend, have a wonderful, faith filled celebration.

Don’t Forget …

  • Athletic Field Events @ SJPA, Mon 11th June
  • Athletics Track Events @ Emmaus, Tues 12th June
  • Rockhampton Show Holiday, Thurs 14th June

Have a great week.

APRE REFLECTION

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

The words of the gospel passage in which Jesus takes bread and wine and blesses them will be familiar. They are the words used at the consecration of the bread and wine during the Mass. The words and actions of Jesus at the Last Supper are regarded as instituting the celebration of the Eucharist. Jesus took an act that was familiar to the Passover meal and gave it a new meaning and a new significance for his followers. What had been a memory of escape from slavery in Egypt became an ongoing reminder of Christ’s continued presence in the Eucharist and in the Eucharistic community.

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE

You should have received a letter explaining the 2018 Premier’s Reading Challenge. Every child is invited to participate in this challenge and read or experience a number of books over the next few months. The challenge runs from Monday 14 May until Friday 24 August.

This year the Premier has challenged all school students from Prep to Year 2 to read or experience 20 books, Years 3 and 4 to read 20 books and Years 5 to 9 to read 15 books. Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories or reading picture books.

Every student who completes the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier.

For more information about the Premier’s Reading Challenge, please visit the link below.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of comprehension.

Strategy – Use Prior Knowledge to Connect with Text

Readers bring information from what they already know or what they have read before about a topic and connect it with what they are reading to increase their understanding of the text and to remember what they have read. Using prior knowledge can help students connect their own experiences with the text to better understand and make sense of what they are reading.

Spelling:

Strategy - Rhyming words

Write each of your spelling words. Next to each word write a rhyming word. It’s ok to use a nonsense word if you can’t think of a rhyming word. This strategy reinforces the spelling pattern the student is studying.

Eg cat, bat – reinforces the at word family

Deanne Senini

CLASSROOM NEWS

What’s up in Year 1?

Lately there has been so much enthusiasm and excitement in our room. On Mother’s Day, after our prayer assembly we held a ‘Pamper Party’ for the special women in our lives. We thoroughly enjoyed spending time biscuit decorating, doing our Mum’s hair, giving out massages and colouring-in.

We are now busy preparing for our next Prayer Assembly in week 10 of this term.

From the Year 1 team.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Congratulations to the following students who will celebrate their birthday this week. They are: Henry Timms (Yr 2), Tahnee Lawton (3F), Talei Bolaqace (Yr 2) and Mrs Brosnan (Office).

Have a great day.

VACATION CARE

Please find attached the Booking form and Program for the upcoming School Holidays. Chelsea will also have these over in the room.

SCHOOL BANKING

School banking every Thursday.

Please send your child’s banking book in so they can place it in the grey classroom-banking bag.

VOLUNTEERS INDUCTION SESSIONS

WPH&S Volunteers Inductions are necessary for the safety of your children. Therefore, we ask that all parents who generously volunteer their time to the school, either in a classroom or in the tuckshop, attend a very brief induction regarding maintaining a safe environment for the children of St. Joseph’s.

These sessions do not take long and are available after assembly on a Monday morning with Deanne Senini, and on Wednesday afternoons from 2:30pm - 3:00pm. Debbie Rooney will also be conducting induction sessions in the tuckshop, if you are helping in there.

Thanks

SPORTS DAYS

Sports day is next week and it’s getting exciting. For the Field events on Monday 11th June here at school, Tea, Coffee and home baked goodies will be available for sale for any family members who’ll be here to cheer on their kids. All tuckshop orders are welcome, and available for any family members to order as well. Please see Debbie Rooney in the tuckshop that morning to place your order, and also the chalkboard above the drink taps in the MPA to see the selection of treats available for purchase.

Like previous years, a BBQ lunch will be on offer for the Track events at Emmaus on Tuesday the 12th June. All food and drink orders for lunch are due in THIS FRIDAY 8TH JUNE.

We’ll be looking for donations of home bake again this year, so if you were able to donate something yummy to sell as a treat for the kids (and also the parents), it would be much appreciated. Home bake can be brought to the P&F tent at Emmaus on Tuesday morning.

We also need help to prepare the rolls before school, and to help cook the BBQ, make the orders, and serve home bake and drinks. Please see Amanda Conway for any further details. Let’s have another great Sports Day!

UNIFORM SHOP

Our uniform shop is run by VOLUNTEERS of the school and is open

Monday morning from 8:15 - 8:45
Tuesday afternoon from 2:45 - 3:15
Friday morning 8:15 – 8:45

Please feel free to drop any uniforms you no longer need so they can put out to sell. Proceeds can go back to you or you can donate it back to the P & F.

The Uniform Shop has quite a lot of good second hand uniforms. Please feel free to pop in (at the opening times above), and have a look.

There are second hand Emmaus uniforms also.
