Newsletter Articles
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
I must start this week’s newsletter by congratulating both the P&F and school community for the support shown for the Meal Deal last Wednesday. The day made over $1300 for families that are in need within the Joey’s community. The ongoing generosity of our school community still continues to amaze me even after my nine years here.
It is my pleasure to announce that Mr Michael Kelso has been appointed as the Acting Assistant Director Schools for the Rockhampton Region for the remainder of 2018. Mike is someone who I have admired for many years as an APRE, Principal and person. Mike’s children, who are now adults, once attended St Joseph’s and I look forward to working closely with him as someone who has always shown a great commitment to Catholic Education and the St Joseph’s community.
As mentioned in previous newsletters, our school has been upgraded with a new phone system installed by the Catholic Education Office. The new St Joseph’s Catholic School, Park Avenue phone is 4994 8205. Even though this new phone number is in use immediately, there will be a small amount of time in which the old number will continue to work, however, I urge you to change the number in your contacts this week and begin using the new number as soon as possible. In addition to the school having a new number, both the Kindy and OSHC will both also have new phone numbers.
The new phone number for the Kindy is 4994 9302
The new phone number for the Outside School Hours Care is 4994 9303
We will endeavour to send out the details of our new contacts to the school community by text, email, notes home, school signs, Facebook and the official school app. Please help us in spreading the word in our community and ensure your school community friends are aware of this very important information.
Tomorrow night, our Year 6’s will be holding the first school disco for the year. The disco will run from 5:30pm - 6:30pm for the Preps - Year 3 and from 6:30pm – 7:30pm for Years 4 - 6. Prizes for the best dressed in each year level will be handed out with the theme being; What I Want To Be When I Grow Up.
The Year 6 class has done some dance practice with me in the lead up in an effort to make it a fantastic night for all ages. Parents who come along are encouraged to bring their dancing shoes as I always encourage our students to share a dance with their parents. Hope to see you there.
After a very short installation period, our new playground was officially opened on Monday morning. I have spoken with the teachers and at some time this week, all of our students will get a chance to test out the new playground. Eventually the area will settle back into the existing routine in which it is used at lunchtime by our Prep – Year 3 students and OSHC after school. Please remember that the Playground should not be accessed either before or after school as it is not supervised by someone from the school staff during these times. Thank you for your assistance in this matter and with the fascination in which the students observed the playground being assembled, please do not be surprised if we have a generation of our younger students grow up and want to be digger and bobcat drivers.
Next Wednesday, 6th of June, we will be hosting a very special Blessing & Opening for our Upper Precinct. Members from Local, State and Federal government will join with representatives from CEO and our surrounding schools to attend the official Blessing & Opening by our Bishop Michael McCarthy. The ceremony is scheduled for 12:00pm for those who wish to attend.
P&F President, Amanda Conway last week asked for more volunteers for upcoming events around the school. If you are at school of a morning, breakfast club desperately needs help, as does tuck-shop. I would be greatly disappointed if I had to reduce the amount of days in which we are able to offer these services due to a lack of volunteers. Please, if you are able to help in the tuck-shop or at the P&F Working Bee scheduled for this upcoming weekend, please contact Amanda for any details. Any help, even a few minutes of a morning, would be greatly appreciated.
Just a reminder that with the introduction of Parent Lounge in Term 1, paper copies of Fee Statements are no longer being mailed out. If you previously received your statement by mail, you will now need to log in to Parent Lounge to in order to access them. Those who received their statements via email will continue to do so.
Finally, I have included a letter dealing with student protective behaviours that has been issued by CEO. The letter has details about a television program that some of our student body may possibly be exposed to or hear about in the community. The letter is for your perusal and gives you some information in regards to discussing the content of this program with your children if the subject arises. For further information, please do not hesitate to contact me through the school office.
Wow, that is a lot of information about an extremely busy Term 2.

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE
Last week you should have received a letter explaining the 2018 Premier’s Reading Challenge. Every child is invited to participate in this challenge and read or experience a number of books over the next few months. The challenge runs from Monday 14 May until Friday 24 August.
This year the Premier has challenged all school students from Prep to Year 2 to read or experience 20 books, Years 3 and 4 to read 20 books and Years 5 to 9 to read 15 books. Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories or reading picture books.
Every student who completes the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier.

LITERACY CORNER
Reading:
Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of fluency.
Strategy: Reread Text
To try to increase a child’s fluency they can reread a selection of text several times until they can read it smoothly, accurately and with expression. Rereading also assists a student when they are having trouble understanding a passage.
Spelling:
Strategy: Pyramid Words
This activity involves writing spelling words in a pyramid shape. Start with the first letter. On the next line write the first two letters. On the next line write the first three letters. Continue until you have written the entire word.
Example:
T
TH
THE
THEM

CLASSROOM NEWS
2F
Wow what a term it has been already!
Between all the other events happening throughout the term we have been busy learning within the classroom. In Math, we have had a heavy focus in the Measurement strand and been learning about the features of various 2D and 3D shapes. We culminated our learning by designing our own robots that we made out of 3D shapes. To make it even trickier we had to cut and glue or sticky tape every 3D shape together. Still on the measurement theme we are now learning the difference between centimetres and meters and learning how to use rulers and tape measures to measure objects.
This term we started off with our prayer assembly to celebrate the Feast of St Joseph. We have been looking at what daily life in the time of Jesus was like and how different it is to how we live our lives. The students drew some amazing pictures to represent their thoughts and support their discussions on the topic. We are listening to both stories of Jesus and parables told by Jesus and breaking open the message and what it means to us in our lives. We are currently working on a collection of group mosaic art pieces to represent one of the parables.
Of course many other things have been happening within our classrooms.
From Year 2

SCHOOL BANKING
School banking has started up again on Thursdays. Please send your child’s banking book in so they can place it in the grey classroom-banking bag.
VOLUNTEERS INDUCTION SESSIONS
WPH&S Volunteers Inductions are necessary for the safety of your children. Therefore, we ask that all parents who generously volunteer their time to the school, either in a classroom or in the tuckshop, attend a very brief induction regarding maintaining a safe environment for the children of St. Joseph’s.
These sessions do not take long and are available after assembly on a Monday morning with Deanne Senini, and on Wednesday afternoons from 2:30pm - 3:00pm. Debbie Rooney will also be conducting induction sessions in the tuckshop, if you are helping in there.
Thanks

Please see Debbie Rooney in the tuckshop that morning to place your order, and also the chalkboard above the drink taps in the MPA to see the selection of treats available for purchase.
Like previous years, a BBQ lunch will be on offer for Tuesday’s Track events at Emmaus on the 12th June. A note will be sent home with details of what to order, and when to have orders back by.
We’ll be looking for donations of home bake again this year, so if you were able to donate something yummy to sell as a treat for the kids (and also the parents), it would be much appreciated. Home bake can be brought to the P&F tent at Emmaus on Tuesday morning.
If you can help in the pre-making of the salad rolls, or helping to cook and serve the BBQ on the day, that would also be much appreciated. Please see Amanda Conway for any further details.
