FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

Welcome to Week 5 of our very busy Term 2. It was with a sad heart that I was informed in the last couple of weeks that Mr Craig Fairbairn, Assistant to the Director – Schools Rockhampton Region will be retiring. Craig has served Catholic Education in this region for over 35 years and has always been a tremendous support, both professionally and as a Grandparent, to the St Joseph’s community. We wish Craig all the best as he soon enters the next chapter in his life full of family, friends and travel.

On Monday’s Assembly, I was able to present the various class awards from our hugely successful ‘Festival of Colour’ fete. Winning the Joey’s Spirit award for the best-presented stall was the Year 2 ‘Yellow’ stall that had a sunflower theme. The year 2 cohort will now have an ice-block party later in the Term.

The winner of the stall that raised the most at the fete will be the recipient of a class pizza party. The winner is the Year 4 ‘Blue’ stall as their sample bags made over $1360 at the fete.

Again, thank you to everybody who contributed in any way to the success of the fete as final figures indicate that the fete will clear over $17000 for the P&F. This result also supports what we already knew was a wonderful Joey’s community event.

As detailed in the last few newsletters, NAPLAN testing is still in progress throughout this week. To help our students perform to their optimum, we are trying to limit movement and any other type of distractions. Any help you can provide in helping our students do their best is greatly appreciated.

A reminder to all families that may have younger siblings and are looking to enrol at Joey’s for Prep in 2019, I strongly encourage you to drop into the office and pick up an enrolment package as soon as possible. In the last few years, positions have been very competitive and with this in mind, we need to know the number of siblings in order to properly prepare of the enrolment interview process that will begin in early Term 3. Please be aware that even if you have a child or children currently at St Joseph’s, we still follow school enrolment policy and interview all possible new students to the school.

Term 2 School Fees were sent out a few weeks ago and are now due. Please see our Finance Secretary, Mrs Megan Crosthwaite as soon as possible to make payment arrangements or book a time through the school office if you need to meet with myself. A friendly reminder that if school fee payments are unable to be met, parents must meet with myself every 12 months in order to review the situation. Resourcing the school can become very difficult if families do not prioritise fee payments as being an important part of the partnership in educating our students. Thank-you in advance for your consideration in attending to this matter.

Well done to our NRL Development Cup team that played at Saleyards Park last Friday. In what was a good day, our team performed well and was victorious against St Anthony’s, 18-4. Even though our team played extremely well, a strong RGS team and a red-hot Frenchville team both defeated us in the following round robin games. Our team played with great heart, skill and sportsmanship throughout the day and again, Joey’s was by far the smallest school taking part in the A Division. Well done to the team in placing third overall in the Rockhampton competition.

SELF DEFENCE LESSONS

As part of Health lessons and as a follow up from the Daniel Morcombe Safety Curriculum taught during Semester One, Year 4, 5 and 6 students are invited to take part in a 4-week self-defence program. This course complements the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum, which talks about staying safe, and being able to exit from unwanted and unsafe scenarios. This self-defence program has been running at St Joseph’s for the past 2 years and has proven very enjoyable, practical and educational for our students.

A note with the information was sent home with your child last week. Please complete all the relevant forms and return to school by Tuesday 22nd May.

LIFE EDUCATION VAN

As part of our Health program, every second year we organise for Healthy Harold the Giraffe and the Life Education van to visit. The van is due to visit us this term during weeks 6 and 7. Each class will visit the van to learn about healthy lifestyle choices. Mrs Tennille Kerrisk will then complete follow up lessons with the classes during Health lessons.

The classes will be working through the following modules:

Prep – My Body Matters
Year 1 – Harold’s Friend Ship
Year 2 – Safety Rules
Year 3 – Harold’s Diary
Year 4 – Mind Your Medicine
Year 5 – Bcybersafe
Year 6 – Decisions

Below is a note from Liz and the Life Education Team:

Liz, Healthy Harold the Giraffe and the Life Education Mobile Learning Centre will be at St Joseph’s Park Avenue from Tuesday 22nd to Tuesday 29th May 2018. We can’t wait to meet our old friends and make new ones too. We’ll be learning about healthy lifestyle choices and having lots of fun along the way.

Head to our Parent and Carer Hub at the link below:

https://www.lifeeducation.org.au/parents/

to have a look at the modules that your kids will be working through. You will find detailed overviews of the modules and fact sheets with 'conversation starter' ideas so that you can carry on discussing the lessons at home. We’re really looking forward to coming to your school. Liz and Healthy Harold.

Parent and Carers Session

Education is one of the strongest preventative measures to take when it comes to our children’s health and safety. We encourage parents to get involved in the Life Education program. Come along to our parent and carers session on Tuesday May 22nd from 8:55am – 9:25am in the Life Education Van.

The van will be located at the end of the multi-purpose court.

You will get to meet the educator and find out more about what your kids learn, how to engage with them in topics they will cover with Healthy Harold the Giraffe and have the opportunity to ask lots of questions.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of comprehension.

Strategy – Retell the Story

A story retelling usually includes characters, setting, problems and solution or the main ideas of the text. It involves telling what is important in the story without telling too much. Retelling helps readers recall what is happening in the story, develop a sense of story structure and become more accurate in monitoring their understanding. They can transfer this knowledge of story structure to their own story writing.

Spelling:

Strategy: Letter Writing

Write a friendly letter to a teacher or a friend using at least 10 of your spelling words. Underline the spelling words that you use. This activity is useful as it allows the student to use their spelling words in context. It will allow them to think about the meaning of their words.

CLASSROOM NEWS

PREP G

We have had a very busy start to term 2. This year prep ran in the inaugural Joey’s Fun Run. This was a very exciting day for prep as they not only participated in the fun run but also, for many students, went on their first bus ride.

In the classroom, we have been learning how to write a sentence. We know that a sentence needs to have a capital letter at the start, a finger space between each word and a full stop to end our sentence. All students look forward to our interactive writing each day, which enables them to create a sentence, write it and then share their sentence with the class.

In religion, we are learning about prayer, the different types of prayer, when we can pray and where we can pray. To help us explore the different types of prayer we have a Prayer Bear. Our Prayer Bear is very popular and very helpful to us when we pray.

Looking forward to the rest of term 2 with the installation of the new prep playground in week 6 and the athlete’s carnival in week 9.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Congratulations to the following students and staff who will celebrate their birthday this week. They are: Hugh Everingham (Yr 6), Evie Maker (Yr 6), Lilly Payne (Yr 4), Tyla Barnes (Yr 5), Isabelle Paap (Yr 1) and Miss Crane (Yr 3)

Have a great day.

FETE NEWS

Thanks again to all our classes for the effort that went into the class stalls at the fete. As mentioned previously, the fete committee were awarding a “Joey’s Spirit” prize, as well as a prize to the class whose stall raised the most money. The winners were…….

Joey’s Spirit: Grade 2 (Yellow - Pong) – unanimous vote for their brightly coloured stall, brightly dressed staff and students, parent donations, fun had by students and for taking their colour to the next level with a “Sunflower” theme. They win an Ice Block party, at a time to be determined.

Most money: Grade 4 (Blue – Sample bags):
Second place: Grade 5 (Indigo – Bake Stall):
Third place: Grade 3 (Green – Earrings and bracelets):
Grade 4 has won a Pizza Party at a time to be determined

Money raised from our fete will be going towards the new Adventure Playground, and thanks again to everyone who helped, attended or had anything to do with the fete at all. It was a fantastic day!

SCHOOL BANKING

School banking has started up again on Thursdays. Please send your child’s banking book in so they can place it in the grey classroom-banking bag.

Therefore, we ask that all parents who generously volunteer their time to the school, either in a classroom or in the tuckshop, attend a very brief induction regarding maintaining a safe environment for the children of St. Joseph’s.

These sessions don’t take long and are available after assembly on a Monday morning with Deanne Senini, and on Wednesday afternoons from 2:30pm - 3:00pm. Debbie Rooney will also be conducting induction sessions in the tuckshop, if you are helping in there.

Thanks
