FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

It was great to see so many of our school community come together to march on ANZAC Day. Marching on ANZAC Day shows our appreciation for all those who fought for the freedoms, we enjoy today. We owe much to our ANZAC heroes, as much of the life we lead today is in no small part due to those who stood for what they believed in, many of which paid the ultimate sacrifice.

‘Greater love has no one that this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.’ John 15:13

LEST WE FORGET

A very special thanks to all who helped make our inaugural Fun Run/Cross Country day last week. It was great to see so many of our students running on the day and committing to an active lifestyle. I must congratulate Mrs Brennan on the tremendous amount of effort that was needed to organise the day. Well done to both Daly House who were the first ever winners of our Cross Country trophy, and our entire first ever cross country age champions. I am sure you will agree it was a wonderful day where not only did our youngest students mostly run straight, but they were equally excited for the special trip back to school on the Emmaus College bus.

It is nearly here. This Sunday will see our school transformed into a festival of colour for the afternoon. Today will see the last P&F Fete meeting as the Fete Committee will be ‘crossing all the t’s and dotting all the i’s.’ Our Fete will run from 2-6pm with rides, raffles, stalls, food, drinks, activities and all sorts of colourful fun to be had. Please bring along your friends, family and neighbours to what looks to be a wonderful community event.

Thanks to everybody who collected the Coles Sports for Schools vouchers over recent weeks. The school set a goal of 10000 vouchers however due to the generosity of our community we were able to raise over 18000 vouchers that will be of great benefit in resourcing our school in the future. Well done to all.

As our school has begun to prepare for our change over to the new National Broadband Network, we have been informed that we will have to be issued a new phone number for the school. This is no small matter, as I believe the school has had the same phone number for well over 30 years. We do not yet know what our new number will be, but as soon as we do, we will begin multiple forms of communication to make our community aware, including changing information on our school letterhead.

Please stay tuned to upcoming information regarding this matter, as it will be imperative to know the new number in order to contact the school by telephone in the future.

Don’t Forget …

  • Final P&F Fete Meeting, Thurs 26th April @ 3:30pm
  • SJPA School Fete, Sun 29th April (2pm – 6pm)

Welcome Mrs Hoffman our new School Counsellor

As parents, we have the responsibility for helping our children through the challenges they face as they grow, develop and mature towards adulthood.

On this journey, there can be times when there may be some worries for a child or a parent about how their child is managing some difficulties or change.

Counselling is a tool commonly used to assist people who are experiencing a transition, change or difficulty in their life. Counselling enables someone to talk about a problem or difficulty with someone who is trained not to be biased or judgemental. Most people who go to a Counsellor find that they do most of the talking, because they are the person who is the expert in their life. The Counsellor does the listening and helps the person reflect upon their own motivations and behaviours, thoughts and feelings. The Counsellor helps provide a space where the child or person can work out how to cope with and discover solutions to their difficulties.

A Counsellor may be helpful if your child is experiencing anxiety, changes within the family, grief and loss issues or even problems related to their school life.

Michelle Hoffman has started in the role of School Counsellor at Saint Joseph¹s in Term 2 and she will be at the school on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. If you would like to make an appointment to see her or talk to her in relation to your child, please contact Mrs. Hoffman by emailing her directly on michelle_hoffman@emmaus.qld.edu.au or you can contact the Office, your child’s classroom teacher or the Principal for a School Counselling Referral Form.

APRE REFLECTION

Over the last few Sundays, the readings have been from the Acts of the Apostles. They tell us stories about how the disciples were afraid moving forward and spreading Jesus’ word. Jesus came to them after they had locked themselves in a room afraid, and Jesus walked with them on the road to Emmaus. On both occasions, through the gift of the Holy Spirit the disciples received courage to complete their job. The men and women of Australia and New Zealand who fought for, and continue to fight for peace throughout the world are also filled with courage. This ANZAC Day, let us pray for a peace filled world and pray we are filled with the gift of Holy Spirit, giving us courage to make a difference to those around us.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN tests will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of Week 5 for Year 3 and 5 students. Teachers have been preparing the students for these tests and will continue to do so until week 5. NAPLAN tests are important for our school as it gives us a good ‘snapshot’ of the areas we are doing well in and also the areas where we as a school need to focus on in the future. The staff at St Joseph’s do our best to make this time as stress free as we can for the students. If you have any concerns about your child sitting the NAPLAN tests, please see me before the end of Week 3. I recommend that all students who are participating in the tests have a good night sleep the night before each test and a good hearty breakfast each morning of the tests.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of Accuracy.

Strategy – Using beginning and ending sounds

When reading a word, students should be using the sounds at the beginning of the word as well as at the end of the word. Often children will look at the beginning letter or letters and guess a word that may fit in the sentence without looking at the rest of the word. They may not even know there is an end to a word. It is important that children slow down enough to be able to look at the whole word before making a guess. They would then cross check the word to make sure it makes sense with the pictures and the rest of the sentence.

Spelling:

Strategy: Hidden Words

Draw a picture and write your spelling words in the picture. Try to hide the words.

Deanne Senini
Assistant Principal Curriculum

CLASSROOM NEWS

Yr 4

Welcome back to term two.

In Year 4 we have a jammed packed term ahead of us. In literacy, we will be focusing on Poetry as well as a quick review of our Information Reports later in the term. Our learning goal in reading is to improve our ability to comprehend the texts we are reading.

This term the Year 4 students will investigate the early explorers of the world before moving onto the First Fleet. In Science, we will be dissecting and exploring plants and their lifecycle. As many of our class members are participating in the Sacramental Program, we will spend our time in religion focusing on the Eucharist.

Congratulations to our Year 4 students who participated in both the Fun Run and the Cross Country trials. We had an amazing turn out and very enthusiastic runners. It was a joy to see so many students ‘have a go’.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Congratulations to the following students who will celebrate their birthday this week. They are: James Walker (PM), Denver Bazzacco (Yr 1) and Lucia Jarrett (PM)

Have a great day.
