FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

At the time of reading this, our Year 6 Students, along with their teachers and myself, will be taking part in the Year 6 Leadership Camp at Chaverim, near Bundaberg. We are hoping for sunny skies and dry weather after the heavy rain from a tropical cyclone altered our camp and travel arrangements significantly last year.

‘Chaverim’ when translated from Hebrew means ‘friends’ and this camp is a wonderful opportunity for our Year 6 students to not only learn more about the gifts of their peers over the week, but to also discover more about the unique gifts they have to offer those around them. I know both students and staff will have a great time.

As I myself will be attending camp, I would like to take this opportunity to wish our whole community a happy, holy and safe Easter break. Just a reminder that school resumes for Term 2 on Tuesday, the 17th of April due to the fact that Monday the 16th of April is a pupil free day. This extra pupil free day is a result of all regional buses statewide, still being in southeast Queensland due to the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Next Term we have some big ticket items on the calendar as we have our biannual St Joseph’s school fete, a new adventure playground being installed as well as NAPLAN for our Year 3 and 5 students. With that being said, have a restful and re-energizing holiday break.

Don’t Forget …

  • Year 6 Camp @ Chaverim, 26th-29th March
  • Fete Meeting, Wed 28th March @ 3:15pm
  • Holy Thursday, 29th March
  • Good Friday, 30th March
  • Easter Sunday, 1st April
  • Pupil Free Day, Mon 16th April
  • Term 2 commences, Tues 17th April
  • Board Meeting, Wed 18th April @ 5:30pm
  • SJPA Cross Country/Fun Run Day, Thurs 19th April
  • SJPA School Fete, Sun 29th April 2 – 6pm

Have a happy, holy break and I look forward to seeing you in Term 2.

APRE REFLECTION

When Psyche Mae featured in Project Compassion 2008, she was living in a squatter settlement, on the edge of a giant rubbish dump outside Manila in the Philippines. Her family was forced to pick through the rubbish to sell what they could to survive.

In 2018, Psyche Mae is now a young social worker, achieving her dream of helping others struggling to leave poverty behind them – with plans to study a Master’s degree.

By working toward, the common good, which is working towards what is good for everyone not just ourselves, we can make a difference.

Thank you for all the contributions made to the Joey’s Project Compassion. The final classroom tallies will be made and the class who raised the most money will be announced in week 1 next term.

CURRICULUM NEWS

PARENT LOUNGE / PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS

Recently we held a parent information session outlining the features of Parent Lounge.

Parent Lounge will enable parents to log in to a secure site where they will be able to complete a variety of tasks including:

  • Access and print student reports
  • Book Official Parent Teacher Interviews
  • Update contact details
  • Make fee payments
  • View student attendance records

You should have received a letter with your parent code and password. Once you’ve logged on you are able to change your password to something more memorable for you. If the letter hasn’t made it home to you please contact the office to receive your parent code and password.

This year we are offering parents a second formal parent teacher interview. These formal interviews will be held early next term and the only way you will be able to book an interview will be through parent lounge. Parent lounge will be open for parents in week 10 and over the holidays for you to book interviews for next term. It will shut off on the first day back at school next term. A notification will be sent out via the Skoolbag app once parent lounge is open for you to book your interview times.

Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum

Throughout Semester One, our school will be implementing the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum with students in all year levels. The curriculum is based on principles of best practice in child safety education and centres around three key messages: Recognise, React and Report. Through a series of lessons, students will learn how to recognise, react and report when they are unsafe or find themselves in situations that can have a significant detrimental effect on their physical, psychological or emotional wellbeing. The Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum links very closely with the Australian Health Curriculum. Therefore, these lessons will be delivered by Miss Tennille Kerrisk as part of our Health Curriculum on a Tuesday and Wednesday. The Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum has been mandated by our Diocese to be actively taught in all of the Rockhampton Catholic schools each year.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this program please don’t hesitate to contact either Miss Kerrisk, Mrs Senini or Mr Fitzgerald.

Information about the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum can be found at

http://www.education.qld.gov.au/child-safety-curriculum

I would like to wish everyone a very holy, happy and restful Easter break and look forward to working with you all again next term.

CLASSROOM NEWS

Prep

It has been a wonderful first term in Prep! We have been busy investigating our letters, their sounds and the structure of sentences.

We spent some time getting to know all our new friends and sharing stories of our favourite places and the special people that we love. Together we created our very own Prep Family Tree.

In science we have studied the difference between a living thing and a non-living thing and investigated what living things need by growing our own seeds.

As we are now in the Lenten season we have spent a lot of time learning the Easter Story especially - Palm Friday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and of course Easter Saturday.

We wish everyone a safe and relaxing Easter. See you in Term 2!

Yr 1
