FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

Our school Parents & Friends association will be conducting an Open Night along with an Annual General Meeting on Tuesday the 6th of March. Our P&F do wonderful work and are a valued part of our school community. It would be wonderful to have some new faces come along, as the P&F continually needs new members bringing with them their different gifts and talents. Please come along and meet some of our existing P&F members and see the wonderful work being done to support our students. The P&F is also an excellent way to keep abreast of what is happening in the school and a great way to contribute to the school’s, and our students’, ongoing growth. I hope to see you there.

This is a great segue into the following brochure that the Queensland Parents and Friends Association have prepared. It is titled; ‘Parent Engagement In Learning And Wellbeing Fact Sheet,’ and it is well worth a read with some great information included for parents and caregivers.

The new Right Relationships – Parent Code of Conduct and Parent Grievance Procedures & Guidelines were posted to the School App last week. These documents can be found under the parent info/documents tabs of our skoolbag app, were presented to both the School Board and teaching staff last week. I urge you as parents and caregivers to take the time to familiarise yourself with these important documents. I have also included a link to the Rockhampton Catholic Education site where the documents can also be found.

http://www.rok.catholic.edu.au/parents-and-community/overview/

It is with great sadness that I inform the school community that our school counselor Mrs Lisa Hilliard has tendered her resignation. After a very tough time involving the loss of loved ones, Lisa will be moving back to Brisbane to be closer to family. Emmaus have recently advertised the position as we look to appoint someone as soon as possible in order to support the Joey’s community. Lisa will be a huge loss to both the Joey’s community and to myself personally, but I wish her all the best in her future endeavors.

A Parent Lounge information night with Bernadette Handley from the Catholic Education Office of Rockhampton will be held on Wednesday, March the 14th at 6:00pm. Bernadette has a wealth of knowledge in regards to Parent Lounge and will be coming in to show everyone how to make best use of it’s many features and to answer any questions you may have.

Please remember that Parent Lounge will now be the primary method in which you will book parent/teacher interview times and access you child’s end of Semester reports among other things, so getting to know how to use this valuable tool will be essential.

Catholic Education’s St Patrick’s Race Day will be held at Callaghan Park on Saturday, March 17th. Raffle tickets for this event were sent home with Year 4 and 5 students that were chosen at random. These books of tickets will need to be returned to our school office, sold or unsold for collection by Tuesday the 13th of March. Proceeds from this event are distributed to all the Catholic schools in the Rockhampton and Capricorn Coast area. Details on where you can purchase tickets as well as other relevant information can be found on the included promotional poster.

The P&F Fete committee is currently selling unlimited ride passes for our St Joseph’s Fete in the school office for $25. If you purchase your unlimited ride pass before April 19th you will go into the draw to win your money back. This is a great deal, as the purchase of the unlimited ride pass on the day of the fete will increase to $30.

Get in quick and snap them up.

APRE REFLECTION

This week in Project Compassion classes we meet Rattanak. Rattanak is a skilled young barber, living an independent life in rural Cambodia. But it wasn’t always that way. As a child, he contracted polio and also became deaf. Like many people who are deaf or hard of hearing, Rattanak faced isolation at home, with a lack of opportunity to escape poverty.

With our help, we can help people gain work and participate in local their communities.

Please donate to Project Compassion boxes in classrooms.

Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum

Throughout Semester One, our school will be implementing the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum with students in all year levels. The curriculum is based on principles of best practice in child safety education and centres around three key messages: Recognise, React and Report. Through a series of lessons, students will learn how to recognise, react and report when they are unsafe or find themselves in situations that can have a significant detrimental effect on their physical, psychological or emotional wellbeing. The Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum links very closely with the Australian Health Curriculum. Therefore these lessons will be delivered by Miss Tennille Kerrisk as part of our Health Curriculum on a Tuesday and Wednesday. The Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum has been mandated by our Diocese to be actively taught in all of the Rockhampton Catholic schools each year.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this program please don’t hesitate to contact either Miss Kerrisk, Mrs Senini or Mr Fitzgerald.

Information about the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum can be found at below

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of Comprehension.

Strategy: Back Up and Reread

This strategy is used when a child reads a sentence or passage and realises that what they have just read doesn’t make sense. They then go back and reread the sentence or passage again to understand the meaning of the sentence.

Spelling:

Strategy: Rainbow Words

This strategy involves students writing each of their spelling words. They use two colours. They write their spelling pattern in one colour and the rest of the word in a different colour. An example of this is:

    an words

    long a

    prefixes

Fan

bake

disorder

Can

tail

mistake

Ban

clay

unaware

Sponsors of the week

This week’s generous sponsors are Graeme Filer and Lyndal Roth-Filer, and their son Regen; owners of Rocky 4x4 Mechanix, and owners of the oldest, and the original winch competition truck in Rockhampton, “The Hulk”.

Look closer around Joey’s and you’ll find the above sticker adorning the back of many a car in the line at pick-up time. This can only be a testament to the combined 50 years of quality 4WD service and maintenance delivered by the team at Rocky 4x4 Mechanix.

Working on all makes and models, carrying out log book servicing, road worthy’s, repairs, maintenance, accessory supplies and fitting, they live and breathe 4WD’s. So much so, that Graeme became the founder of the CQ Off-Road Club, and they regularly race “The Hulk” to continually improve their skills.

Send your 4WD for a little TLC to Rocky 4x4 Mechanix at 74 Glenmore Rd North Rockhampton 4701, give them a call on (07) 4921 3222, or check them out via the link below. If you don’t get to say hi to “The Hulk”, don’t fear, as it will be on deck at the Festival of Colour along with Graeme and Lyndal, so we can all personally thank them for their fantastic contribution.
