FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

Throughout the year our Prep class has been working in partnership with Year 2H to restore our vegetable garden and return it back to its former glory. To say that they have achieved this would be a massive understatement. We obviously have some budding farmers at Joey’s as last week we were presented with some of the fantastic vegetables that our Preps and Year 2 class have grown.

Huge tomatoes, cherry tomatoes and truly gigantic eggplants found their way around the school community last week, highlighting the fantastic work these two classes have done together on this project. I am not sure how many of our students enjoy a good eggplant regularly, and for a lot of our students the idea of an, ‘egg-plant’ seemed a bit strange until they were able to see one close up. One of the eggplants was weighed and came in at a staggering 1.363kgs. If I could have somehow preserved it, I would have loved to have placed it in our school trophy cabinet for all to see. It is really that impressive.

This joint project has been a great educational opportunity for all the students involved as they have worked in partnership with each other and have developed a true sense of pride and ownership over the vege garden. Well done to all involved including our adult volunteers who continue to provide meaningful opportunities for our students each and every day. Now all we need to do is convince our students to eat the eggplants.

With this being the last week of swimming, I would like to thank George Hunt, Mark Ryan and Tony Wren for driving the bus for ten of the days of swimming this year as well as Tracey and Megan in the front office who have ferried extra students to the pool each lesson. The generous actions of these community members in giving up their own spare time has saved our school community thousands of dollars in bus and driver hire and allowed us to keep our five-week swimming program so affordable. It is the generosity of people such as these that continues to make Joeys a great family based, school community.

APRE REFLECTION

Time to Remember

This year, marks 99 years since peace descended on Europe’s Western front as a result of the armistice. More than 10 million soldiers, sailors and airmen died since the First World War had begun four years earlier.

‘Greater love has no man than this,
that a man lay down his life for his friends.
You are my friends if you do what I command you.’

‘Vinnie’s Christmas Hampers – Term 4 Joeys Giving Plan

We are continuing to collect items for the ‘Joey’s Christmas Hamper Appeal’ over the next couple of weeks. Families are asked to donate an item each week to their child’s classroom hamper where possible. To ensure the St Vincent DePaul Society have ample time to distribute the items, please ensure the goods have an expiry date that would reach into early 2018. This appeal is potentially life changing and our support in previous years has been tremendous.

If you are able, please contribute to this worthwhile cause.

PRESENTATION NIGHT

This year our Presentation Night will be Thursday 23rd November and the theme is Let’s Celebrate. Classes will be presenting songs and some dance performances during the evening which commences at 6:00pm. Our annual school awards will also be presented throughout this evening.

Final Children’s Mass for 2017

Our final Children’s Mass with the Our Lady Help of Christians Parish will be held this Saturday evening the 18th of November. It would be lovely to have as many of the Joey’s community come along to celebrate. It would be especially great to have as many of our Year 6 students as possible as it will be their last parish mass as St Joseph’s Park Avenue students. Hope to see you there.

Sacramental Program

The next Sacramental Programme will commence early in Term 1, 2018 with the children journeying through the Sacraments of Penance (Reconciliation), Confirmation and Eucharist. Please complete the attached letter and return to school to show your expression of interest.

CURRICULUM NEWS

BOOKLISTS

2018 booklists will be sent home this week. Please check with your child that they have received it. Once again Capricorn Educational Resources (CER) in Alexandra Street have offered to give a generous amount of money back to the school when Joeys parents purchase their school supplies from them. Of course you are able to purchase your child’s supplies from wherever you wish however I have worked closely with the ladies from CER and they guarantee supply of the correct equipment. Teachers put a significant amount of thought and time into developing the booklists so I ask that you provide your child with all the equipment listed. If purchasing from CER you are welcome to drop your order into school before the end of Term or take it directly to CER.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of comprehension.

Strategy – Check for Understanding

This strategy teaches children to stop frequently and check or monitor whether they understand what they are reading. This is typically a quick summary of what they’ve read, starting with who and what.

Spelling:

Strategy – Across and Down Words: Write each of your spelling words across and then down. See the example below.

CLASSROOM NEWS

YR 6

Wow! Week 6! Nearly the end of the year. We have been busy finishing our assignments, these are a few which have been really interesting!

This term in Maths, Grade 6 has been working on a Maths Investigation called ‘Pyramids and Pharaohs,’ by the title you can already tell it is about Ancient Egypt. For the investigation students will first be asked to create a timeline about Giza going from 3000 BC - 500 BC. The timeline may include events like when Pyramids are built or the birth or death of famous Pharaohs in Giza.

For the second part of the investigation students made a paper model of what the Pyramids of Giza look like. To make the Pyramid sizes match the scale inside the student’s maths investigation book, it shows sizes and degrees to use to build these Pyramids. There were many great Pyramid models in the classroom with full effort put into them, it was excellent.

Models of the Pyramids

This term in Art we have been learning and grooving to the Bhangra Dance which is an Indian folk dance that has been around for hundreds of years. Year six first learnt a dance to the song “Pretty Woman Video” from Shahrukh Saif, Preity and out of the movie Kal Ho Naa Ho. This is a fun Bollywood style dance. After we have a bit of a practice, each student was placed in a small group which they would make their own dance inspired by Bhangra moves. Year 6 have not completed these dances yet but so far they are looking fantastic, keep a look out for a performance soon!

Some great dance moves!

The next four weeks at St. Josephs are the Grade 6’s last weeks at the school. The year 6’s are so excited but also really sad at the same time as they are leaving some of their friends, teachers and they will just miss the school as some of them have been here for seven years. We are in the classroom preparing for fun day, last day of school and Graduation! We wish all of the Year 6 students good luck on their journey to high school, which is another new chapter in their life.
