FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

This year at St Joseph’s Catholic school, we have focused on the following theme;

‘Be the someone to someone in need’

With this in mind, as a school community we are beginning to collect items for the ‘Joey’s Christmas Hamper Appeal’ over the next four weeks. Families are asked to donate an item each week to their child’s classroom hamper where possible. Please ensure that all items have an expiry date that would reach into early 2018 allowing ample time for the St Vincent DePaul society to distribute the food to those who are less fortunate than us in our own local community. If you are able, please help support this worthwhile cause.

This Wednesday and Thursday, we will be celebrating All Saints day and All Souls Day. These events are special days in the calendar of the Catholic church as, on All Saints day we remember the work of all the saints who dedicated their lives to working for God, while on Thursday we remember all of our dearly departed on All Souls day.

Swimming nomination notes have been sent home this week. Please fill them out and return them as soon as possible to your child’s classroom teacher in order for Mrs Brennan to collate them and begin preparing the 2017 swimming carnival program.

As we are well into a relatively short Term 4, I would like bring to your attention that we have a significant amount of outstanding school fees. Without payment of these fees, it is increasingly difficult to properly resource the school as we would like. With this in mind, I would ask that you give this matter your urgent attention.

If you are having legitimate problems meeting these commitments, I would encourage you to make an appointment through the school office to see me as soon as possible.

Failure to meet the financial commitment of school fees has a detrimental effect on the teaching and learning of all students at our school.

A reminder that if you have any class requests for your child in 2018 you need to book a time through the office to see me by Monday the 6th of November. This date was listed as the 10th of November last week, however the teaching staff and the leadership team will be meeting and finalizing class lists on Tuesday the 7th of November.

Congratulations to our hard working Learning Support Coordinator, Kath Howell who has been nominated for the Queensland College of Teachers awards in 2017. It is great for Joeys to have a nominated educator of Kath’s standard nominated and representing our school.

Sadly, we farewell Mr Ray Carrington on Friday, as he will be taking some well-earned long service leave for the remaining four weeks of the school year. I am sure you will all join me in wishing Ray a safe and restful break.

Finally, well done to the P&F and all other volunteers who made Saturday evenings Trivia Night such a success. A lot of work goes into making an evening such as this happen and we at Joeys are blessed with having so many people who are able to give of their time and continue to make our school an enjoyable welcoming community.

Don’t Forget …

APRE REFLECTION

All Saints Day

Saints are sometimes regarded as ‘Catholic superheroes’. Stories of miraculous and remarkable deeds abound, though more in the vein of conversions and cures than speeding bullets and tall buildings. But to get caught up on the Saints of the stained glass windows is to overlook the vast majority of saints. You see, a saint is anybody whose soul is in heaven. The Church celebrates a certain number of Saints whose lives provide a glimpse of God for the rest of the Church. But there are many, many more saints whose glimpse of God was only ever experienced by their family, friends and those with whom they worked. The feast of ALL Saints is an opportunity to remember and reflect on the lives of those saints who’ve been known and loved by just a few and whose sphere of influence was such that they will never be recognised as Saints by the universal Church. – Greg Sunter.

RELIGIOUS MATTERS

No Prayer Assembly this week

‘Vinnies’ Christmas Hampers – Term 4 Joeys Giving Plan

As a school community we are going to collect items for the ‘Joey’s Christmas Hamper Appeal’ over the next four weeks. The aim of the appeal is to help our brothers and sisters in the community who find they are enduring hard times. Our generosity is the past has been met with profound gratitude: quiet smiles, a murmured thank-you, sheer relief from parents, exuberance, excitement and happy noise from kids.

Families are asked to donate an item each week to their child’s classroom hamper where possible. Please ensure that all items have an expiry date that would reach into early 2018 allowing ample time for the St. Vincent DePaul society to distribute the food over the Christmas period and into the New Year.

If you are able, please help support this worthwhile cause.

SAVE THE DATE – Final Children’s Mass for 2017

Our final Children’s Mass with the Our Lady Help of Christians Parish will be held on Saturday the 18th of November. It would be lovely to have as many of the Joey’s community come along to celebrate. It would be especially great to have as many of our Year 6 students as possible as it will be their last parish mass as St Joseph’s Park Avenue students. Hope to see you there.

SPORTING MATTERS

Swimming Carnival

Swimming carnival nominations went home earlier this week and are due back by Friday 3rd November. You may notice the start time has changed to 5:00pm. This is to accommodate the growing number of competitors in the 25m pool. Last year we were still racing in the 25m pool at dusk with no lighting. In the interest of the safety of our swimmers and spectators, we have moved the carnival forward half an hour to avoid this happening again.

Next week at swimming lessons all swimmers will have a run through in the races they have been nominated in to ensure they are competent at this level.

Friday Interschool Sport

As the days continue to get warmer, we continue with Season C sport. Please remind your child to check they have their school hat, and water bottles ready for Friday sport.

CURRICULUM NEWS

DAY FOR DANIEL

Last Friday we participated in Day for Daniel. Thank you to everyone who participated. We had a large proportion of both students and staff wearing red shirts to help promote the important message of child safety. As a school group we raised $369 to contribute to this fantastic cause.

Trivia Night

Congratulations and thankyou to the P&F and Mr Fitzgerald for an enjoyable and successful trivia night last Saturday evening. An event like this doesn’t just happen, there are many hours of preparation that goes in before the day of the event and several more hours of setting up, working on the night and cleaning up afterwards. We are extremely lucky to have such an active and supportive group of parents in our P&F and I thank them for their constant support of our school.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of accuracy.

Strategy – Trade a Word / Guess a Word That Makes Sense

When readers encounter words they don’t know, but they understand the gist of the text, they insert a word that makes sense in place of the unknown word. This strategy provides the reader with the option to continue reading by using a similar word for an unknown word. Reading continues and meaning stays intact.

Spelling:
Activity:

Write an advertisement, song and poem using your spelling words.

CLASSROOM NEWS

YR 1F

The end of the year is fast approaching and a couple of assessments are still to be completed. However, the learning will continue till the last day of term. The students tell me that they have enjoyed their time during the year. It is not surprising that most cite English and Maths activities as their favourite time of the day because the activities are interesting and very hands on. They enjoy hand writing and writing stories. I think writing about super heroes would have to be the most engaging topic.

In Religion, we are investigating the Church. What does it look like inside? What do we do there? Who goes there? These are just three questions that we will answer.

Today we supported Day for Daniel and Canteen. The students were very involved. Included is a photo of the students working on their Report Safety Network Hands.
