FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

I would like to take the opportunity to thank Mr Alan Barker for the time in which I have worked as his Assistant Principal. During this time, I have learned much from Alan and seen Joeys experience tremendous growth and prosperity. Alan personally has made me a better educator and I will miss his knowledge and guidance as a work colleague. I thank Alan for his continued friendship and I am sure you will join with me in wishing him all the best in his future endeavours. I also look forward to working with the Joeys community for the rest of the year and into the beginning of 2018.

Today we had a media team visiting our school in order to shoot a promotional video. This video is being created by the Diocesan Office as a tool for people seeking Catholic values who may be new to the area and considering enrolling their child or children in a local catholic school. The video will emphasize all the positive aspects of our great school community with our greatest asset, our students, being the central feature. On completion, I will post a link to the video for your perusal.

Just a reminder that this Saturday evening, our school P&F Association will be holding a Hawaiian themed Trivia Night at 6:00pm in the school MPA. Cost for the evening is $10 per person with snacks provided and pizza available to order. A bar will be operating on the night and cash prizes will be available. If you are interested in attending and supporting the P&F, I urge you to contact Tracey at the school office on 4922 1906 before Saturday’s event.

During the next two weeks, any parents who may have significant concerns regarding the placement of their children for the 2018 school year, are welcome to make an appointment through Tracey and discuss these concerns with me. Please note that these concerns should arise from the specific needs of your child/ren. This opportunity will remain available until Friday the 10th November, however, after this time, it will NOT be possible to take any further concerns into consideration.

Don’t Forget …

APRE REFLECTION

Every day, Queensland teachers are making a difference educating and inspiring young people across our state. World Teachers' Day is an opportunity to acknowledge our teachers and say thanks for the significant contributions they make in our classrooms and communities. Celebrated in more than 100 countries world-wide, World Teachers' Day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 1994 to recognise the role of teachers in society. World Teachers' Day is held internationally on 5 October. As the day usually falls during school holidays, Queensland celebrates on the last Friday of October each year.

RELIGIOUS MATTERS

Prep M Prayer Assembly

This Friday 27th October, Prep M will be leading their first prayer assembly in OLHC church at 11:30am. The preppies will be presenting an assembly about teachers to celebrate World Teachers Day. Parents, families and friends of the school are all welcome to come along and share this prayer celebration.

Bandana Day

National Bandanna Day is CanTeen’s largest fundraiser and aims to raise $1.3 million this year to support young people living with cancer. Every year, another 23,000 young people (63 a day) have to deal with the challenge of cancer. And we get it. Just when life should be full of possibilities, cancer crashes into a young person’s world and shatters everything. CanTeen is the game changer.

Bandanas are available for sale before and after school. This Friday we will celebrate Bandana Day as our way of supporting Can Teen.

CURRICULUM NEWS

DAY FOR DANIEL

Once again this year we will be inviting students to participate in the annual ‘Day for Daniel’. ‘Day for Daniel’ is a National Day of Action to raise awareness about child safety and protection. Parents, carers and guardians are asked to start a conversation about personal safety in the real world and in an online environment.

Students are asked to wear a red shirt to school on Friday, 27th October with their normal sports uniform shorts. Students are also asked to bring a gold coin donation. This money goes towards educating children about safety and supporting young victims of crime. Those senior students travelling for sport are asked to bring their normal sports shirt to change in to.

Teachers will be talking to the students and completing activities as a way of remembering how to stay safe. Please reinforce the important messages of Recognise, React, Report with your children.

What does RECOGNISE, REACT and REPORT mean?

  • RECOGNISE encourages students to be aware of their surroundings and to recognise body clues in situations where they don’t feel safe.
  • REACT helps students to consider choices that may keep them safe or help make them safe again as quickly as possible.
  • REPORT encourages students to report unsafe incidents to an adult.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of comprehension.

Strategy – Determine and Analyse Author’s Purpose and Support with Text

During this strategy, readers identify why the author wrote a text, by giving specific examples from the text to support the reader’s inference. This strategy helps deepen understanding for how to read and comprehend the text. Readers infer the meaning of the text based on the author’s purpose for writing it, which may be to persuade, inform or entertain.

Spelling:

Activity: Word Sort

Divide a piece of paper into however many patterns you have in spelling this week. For example: if you are learning about ‘el’ and ‘le’ endings, divide your paper into two sections, and label the pattern at the top of each section. Have someone read the words to you and write them in the appropriate column. Check your work after you finish.

Example:

le

el

table

funnel
