FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

Welcome to the second week of our very short Term 4. I must first begin with an apology as in last week’s insert I listed TCC’s Orientation Day as Monday the 16th of October. This would have been placed in my calendar very early in the year and I have been told that this date is incorrect. The correct date for TCC’s Orientation Day is in fact Monday the 23rd of October. I also listed the Emmaus Orientation Day as November 16th. This date has also changed, as it is actually Thursday the 2nd of November. Sorry for any inconvenience these errors may have caused.

This week we have begun our Term 4 swimming program. As we have done in the past our program will run for five weeks beginning in Week 2 of the Term and concluding in Week 6. In an effort to avoid the Rockhampton Christmas Parade we have scheduled the swimming carnival in the following week. I hope this indeed does not clash but please keep in mind that we have to book the pool 12 months in advance which is always well before the Christmas Parade date is announced annually. Scheduling the carnival a week later was also done to avoid students having swimming lessons during the day and not being fully rested before their races in the evening. Students are asked to wear their sports uniform on the day that they swim and ensure they have everything needed for their lessons.

A huge thank-you must go to our P&F association for subsidising our swimming program each year. This along with a grant from the Federal Government’s Sporting Schools initiative has allowed us to deliver a five-week program along with instruction, transport and carnival hire for a very reasonable cost in this day and age.

I would also like to thank our parents and grandparents who have volunteered their time to driving the bus and transporting our students to and from the pool each week.

Everyone involved in bringing this worthwhile activity to fruition is worth their weight in gold.

I was also very proud that a number of our parishioners approached me last Saturday to let me know how beautifully behaved our students who joined in and celebrated the weekly mass in OLHC church last Friday morning. I assured those that complemented the student’s behaviour that we always hold high standards for the behaviour of our students. Even though this is true, it is always fantastic to hear people speak positively about our wonderful student body.

Finally, I have included a couple of attachments for you to peruse.

The first is a letter from Fr Matthew that was in this week’s Parish Bulletin. The letter is about the presence of a Parish Based’ NET team that will work with the Parish and the four Northside schools in 2018.

The second attachment is about Student Travel Rebates. If your child travels to school via bus, I encourage you to look over the flyer and see if you may be eligible for some type of rebate.

Don’t Forget …

APRE REFLECTION

Time for Peace

With continued unrest across the nations of the world and the recent horrible shooting tragedy in Las Vegas, I thought it was time to offer prayers for peace. Our days are filled with many simple tasks that require little or no reflection: opening a door, making lunches, washing hands, watching regular TV shows and many others. Sometimes, we need to become present in the moment as we do the little things. Slow down. Take time to become aware of the surroundings, listen and share a moment with God.

“For God loved the world so much…”

RELIGIOUS MATTERS

Everyone is invited to Children’s Mass

This Saturday, we will be leading the parish with a children’s mass. Our students participate in the ministries during these masses. Our Year 6 and 5 students are the readers during the mass and some of the younger students take forth the gifts during the offertory. These are wonderful opportunities for our students to become involved in the celebration of the Eucharist. All families are invited to attend and join in with the wider community. A light supper is shared between families and parishioners after mass.

Hope to see you this Saturday

Peer Support

In this week’s final session of the Peer Support Module Keeping Friends the children will be participating in a board game, reinforcing all of the concepts and skills that have been learned over the past 7 weeks. They will be reminded of the qualities of a good friend and the skills needed to maintain friendships and make new friends. Each Peer Support group will have the opportunity to celebrate what they have learned and the new friendships and connections they have made.

CURRICULUM NEWS

Welcome back to what is sure to be a very busy term. I hope everyone had a wonderful break shared with family and friends.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of comprehension.

Strategy – Summarise Text

Summarising is taking selections of text and reducing them to their bare essentials: the gist, the main ideas and the main points that are worth noting and remembering. The reader captures the most important parts of text but expresses them in a shorter version in their own words so the text is more easily remembered.

Spelling:

Activity: Keyboard Practice

Type your words on the computer. This will help you learn to spell your words as well as help you become aware of the keys on a keyboard.

Deanne Senini

CLASSROOM NEWS

Term 4 in 3T

We are looking forward to a busy term to end our year. In Mathematics we have started our investigation called ‘It’s on the Cards’ where we will be making card games based around the topic of time. We are writing descriptions in English using our knowledge of the Sun, Moon and Earth from last terms Science focus. This term in Science we are looking at living and non-living things. October is the month of the Rosary; this will be a focus area in Religion before we end the year learning about Advent. As part of Geography we will be studying the world’s climate zones. In Art we are looking at aboriginal art work and producing our own pieces of art. We have picked our first vegetable out of our vegie patch with everyone (not all) enjoying the taste of our beans.

WPH&S Volunteers Inductions are necessary for the safety of your children. Therefore, we ask that all parents who generously volunteer their time to the school, either in a classroom or in the tuckshop, attend a very brief induction regarding maintaining a safe environment for the children of St. Joseph’s.

These sessions only take about five minutes and are available after assembly on a Monday morning with Deanne Senini, and on Tuesday afternoons from 2:30pm - 3:00pm. Sue Clarke will also be conducting induction sessions in the tuckshop, if you are helping out in there.
