FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

Congratulations to Ava Geizler from Year 3 who celebrated her Baptism during our Children’s Mass last Saturday evening. Well done to Ava and her family on taking this huge step in becoming closer in their relationship with God and continuing their own special faith journey.

As energy prices continue to soar, the Diocesan Catholic Education Office has approached me about the installation of solar power to help meet the future needs our school community. With this in mind the installation of the proposed solar system will reduce our first year electricity costs by over $50,000 and is projected to have a 10-year savings total of just over $620,000. The installation will also save over 90 tonnes of carbon emissions each year. The total installation for this system is in two stages with the changing of our current lighting to energy efficient LED lighting and the installation of solar panels on the Multi-Purpose Area roof and an inverter.

We are lucky enough to secure the full installation of this solar system during the September holiday period. We have negotiated with all involved parties to ensure that there is minimal disruption to our Vacation Care program being run during this time. I am sure you will all agree that these savings are too good to turn away and I look forward to Joeys surging on into the future. If you would like to know more, please feel free to contact me on the matter.

Through this year the School Board and the P&F have been exploring the possibility of a long sleeve option of our current St Joseph’s sports shirt. The benefits of this long sleeve option in relation to both sun protection and cooler weather along with costing, were all taken into consideration. With this in mind, beginning with the start of Term 4 this year, St Joseph’s families will have the option to purchase a long sleeve shirt leading into the summer months. Please be aware that this is just an option open to our community and the long sleeve shirt is not compulsory. Inferno will begin taking pre-orders for this long sleeve option over the week so we can try and have them available for the majority of Term 4. If you are interested, please contact Inferno as soon as possible before they submit a bulk order. The long sleeve option will be priced at $50.00 by Inferno. I have included a photo of the long sleeve shirt option being worn by one of our students for your perusal. Thank-you to everyone involved in bringing this long process to fruition.

It is with great sadness that I inform you that Sue Clarke will be stepping away from the role of Tuck-shop Assistant for Joeys at the end of Term 3. With this sad news comes an exciting opportunity for someone within our community to fulfil this existing position. Sue has assured me that she will not be disappearing and will happily mentor the successful applicant. Information about the position was sent out via the school app and the P&F ‘Joeys Family and Friends’ Facebook group on Monday and is also included as an insert in this newsletter. If you know of someone who may be interested, please pass on this information. We look forward to Sue continuing to be an active part of our Joeys community and wish her the best for her future employment endeavours.

I realise that Term 4’s swimming program is still some time away, however to be prepared I am asking if there is any volunteers in our Joeys community who have a bus license and would be able to drive the multiple shuttle run from the school to the pool and back on Tuesday and/or Wednesday. Our swim program runs for 5 weeks beginning Tuesday the 10th and Wednesday the 11th of October and the ability to lower our transport costs have provided us with the opportunity to offer the program at a reasonable rate compared to private swim lessons. We are currently one of the few schools who still offer a swim program and with the safety issues around young children and water, I believe in the benefit of swimming being a skill for life and want to continue offering an affordable program to our Joeys families. Please let me know if you are able to assist.

APRE REFLECTION

In Isaiah 58 Jesus calls us to love everyone, with particular emphasis on the poor- the people who do not have what they need to live.

“..is it not to share your food with the hungry..
to provide the poor wanderer with shelter..
when you see the bare, clothe them.
Then you will call and the Lord will answer;
you will cry for help,
and he will say:
HERE I AM.”

Isaiah 58: 6-9

While it is sad to see the lives the poor may live, the good news is we can do something about it. This term let us all “Be The Someone to someone in need” and show preferential option for the poor by supporting our school’s involvement in the Samaritan’s Purse (more information later in the newsletter.)

RELIGIOUS MATTERS

Children’s Mass

Last Saturday we celebrated our Children’s Mass. The children who attended were witness to the baptism of one of our students Ava. We were able to celebrate this special occasion with Ava and he family, and we all participated in welcoming her to the church family and seeing her immersed in faith.

Samaritan’s Purse

We live in an amazing world with plenty of resources in our local and regional area. Yet many people around the world miss out. Caring for the poor is everyone’s responsibility. For the rest of this term we are going to make a greater effort to reach more people in remote regions of the world through the Samaritan’s Purse.

The Samaritan’s Purse is an organisation that provides emergency relief and development assistance to suffering people around the world. It focuses on the needs of people who are victims of war, famine natural disaster, poverty and disease with the aim of demonstrating God’s love and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. The aid is given without regard to the race, creed, gender, religion or ethnicity of the people who benefit.

Operation Christmas child is a giving program designed to reach children in poverty around the world. Each class in our school will be given two shoeboxes to fill (one boy & one girl) with something from each of the following six categories:

  • something to wear
  • something to play with
  • something for school
  • something to love
  • something special
  • something for personal hygiene

Details about the shoeboxes, gift suggestions, prohibited items and general information will be sent home later this week. At the end of term once the boxes are filled, they will be shipped to the Samaritan’s Purse for distribution to children in poverty around the world in time to celebrate Christmas.

All netball and rugby league players will be attending these finals to support and cheer on Joey’s. Good Luck Girls!!

Hats for PE

Over the last few weeks I have noticed an increasing number of students who are coming to PE lessons without hats. Primarily, PE lessons are held on the oval and as the days are certainly heating up, it is imperative all children have a hat on their PE day. Please remind your child/ren to check their bags before school for a school hat.

Woolworth’s Earn and Learn

Once again St Joseph’s has registered to be part of the Woolworth’s Earn and Learn program. Through this program we will be able to get new educational resources for our school.

From Wednesday 26th July to Tuesday 19th September we are collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers. You will get one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco and gift cards). Place the Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker onto a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet and when it’s complete, the Sticker Sheet can be dropped into the Collection Box here at the school office.

At the end of the promotion we’ll be able to get some great new equipment. The range is extensive and offers lots of items ideal for our students – including resources for Maths, English, Science and some fantastic fun supplies for Arts & Craft, Sport and for our library. Last year through this program we purchased a variety of maths equipment including a teaching clock for every classroom, some stopwatches and sporting equipment.

You can get a sticker card from any Woolworths Supermarket and we will keep spare ones here in the office if you need an extra one. Please make sure you completely fill the sheet before you return it to school as partly filled sheets are not counted.

Book Week Character Parade

Once again during Book Week we will be having our annual character dress up parade. Students are invited to dress up as a character from a book. The parade will be held in the multi-purpose area on Thursday, 24th August from approximately 10:30am.

Write 4 Fun Competition

I have received an invitation for our students to participate in a writing competition. Entry is free and students can win money for themselves and the school as well as other great prizes. The competition is open to all students from Kindy - Year 12. Students can either write a poem or a short story. Entries are due by Friday 31st August. If your Joey’s child is interested in entering the competition, please ask them to see me for further details or get the website from the poster displayed in the window of the drama room.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of comprehension.

Strategy – Infer and Support with Evidence

Readers figure out what the author is saying even though it might not be written down in the text. Using their background knowledge, clues from the text, illustrations and captions the reader makes meaning of the text. Not all authors tell the reader everything they want you to know. Students learn to be detectives by looking for clues or evidence in the text to figure out the meaning.

Spelling:

Activity: Rainbow Write

Write your words using a lead pencil. Then trace over your words with a crayon. Then trace a second time with a different coloured crayon. Finally trace a third time with a different coloured crayon. If you have traced neatly you should now see a rainbow.

Deanne Senini
Assistant Principal Curriculum

All entries are due back by Thursday 24th of August.

CLASSROOM NEWS

2F

We have had a super busy term in 2F starting off with Science week and learning about how we can look after our Earth and save it so that it will be around in the future. The students loved the University displays where they got to experience robotics and take their own fingerprints. We have also got to experience the Aboriginal culture during Harmony Day, celebrated be young at Under 8’s Day and presented our prayed assembly at church.

This term in Science we have been learning about lifecycles and examining close up the life stages of the mealworms we are growing in class. The students have enjoyed coming in each morning to see if their mealworm has shed its skin or changed into a pupa. We will be culminating this unit with a visit to the Rockhampton Zoo next week and researching our own animal and its lifecycle to create a slide show presentation using our Chromes.

We are starting to learn about how the World is divided into continents and oceans and where these are in relation to Australia. The students have enjoyed seeing where some of the animals they have read about are found throughout the world and are amazed how some are found in only one area for example lemurs on Madagascar and Penguins in Antarctica.

There are many more learning experiences to come this term.
