FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

Last week we celebrated both our annual Under 8’s Day as well as our combined whole school and parish mass to mark St Mary of the Cross MacKillop’s Feast Day. It is wonderful to see our school community taking part in these vibrant events and I must congratulate everybody who worked behind the scenes in every facet of our Under 8’s Day. The great dedication of all involved not only makes events like this possible but also successful.

Friday’s mass was a delightful way to celebrate the important role that Mary MacKillop had in inspiring the Sisters of St Joseph to found our school 88 years ago. After mass I was approached by a number of parishioners, including Sr Margaret Smith who is a Josephite Sister, who wanted to commend our students on the way they read, sang and behaved during the mass and mentioned how lovely it was to share the mass with the school community.

Once again, I congratulate the staff and students on their part in this wonderful shared faith experience.

As the new touch football season approaches, I would like to take this opportunity to remind people that the Multi-Purpose Area and it’s corresponding toilet block will not be able to be accessed of an afternoon other than by the students attending our OSHC as per the law. Touch teams training on the school grounds will need to use the newer toilet and refrigerated drink facilities near the lower school eating area. This situation would only be reversed if the MPA court is being used for a school based activity and our OSHC group moves to the lower playground area for the afternoon. Please ask your children to keep an eye out for the bright yellow signs indicating if the toilets are not to be used. As our designated parent/disabled toilet is also situated in the MPA and should not be accessed of an afternoon, parents are asked to use the toilet facilities found in the administration block. Thank-you in advance for your consideration on this matter.

Don’t Forget …

  • School Board Meeting, Thursday 17th August @ 5:30pm

  • Book Week Character Parade, Thursday 24th August

Have a great week.

APRE REFLECTION

SAY ‘YES’

As we get busy and then even busier, it is easy to become selfish of our time. We can tend to isolate ourselves from family, neighbours and the community by claiming “I was too busy.” Our call to a Christian life is a call to say ‘Yes’ to life itself and by doing so, ‘Yes’ to others and all that life offers. Mary our Mother, is the ultimate example of saying ‘Yes’ to the service of others and life. This week we celebrate The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and may use this as a reminder that when we say ‘Yes’, we are saying ‘Yes’ to life, hope, love, God and ourselves.

Have a great week

Peer Support

This week in the Peer Support session, children will be focusing on the importance of support networks and the role that friends play in each other’s lives. Under 8s Day

Last Thursday St Joseph’s celebrated Under 8s Day for 2017. It was a very enjoyable morning with lots of playing and learning occurring. I would like to thank the following people for their contributions to the day:

  • Joey’s P&F for donating and cooking sausages for the students for lunch
  • Mr Fitzgerald for supplying the P-3 children with an ice block at second break
  • Mrs Anderson and 3A for leading us in prayer
  • Joey’s P-3 staff for planning, putting together and manning the activities
  • Parents and family members who assisted the teachers with activities
  • Josh our Adopted Cop for coming along
  • Michael Newman and the Rural Fire Brigade for bringing their trucks, Blazer the Koala and lots of goodies for the students
  • Miss Black and year 6 for their assistance with setting and packing up seats and tents and helping with face painting
  • Family members for coming along and joining in our celebrations

Self Defence Lessons

Over the past 4 weeks our Year 4 and 6 students have participated in self-defence lessons. During those lessons the students have learnt effective ways of getting out of holds and grabs. The students really enjoyed the experience. I would like to thank Mrs Ashleigh McNae along with her helpers (Chantal and Keegan) for instructing the students in such important lifesaving skills.

Big Book Swap

Every second year during book week we have a big book swap morning. This is when we ask students to bring in an unwanted book (in good condition) and swap it for another pre-loved book. This activity has been very well supported in the past and I’m hoping it will be again this year. The aim is for every child to go home with a new pre-loved book. Any leftover books are distributed to classrooms and used as classroom readers. If you would like to donate a book (or multiple books) for this event, please drop them to the library to Mrs Roberts who will place them aside for our big book swap. More books suitable for the upper grades are still required.

Woolworth’s Earn and Learn

Once again St Joseph’s has registered to be part of the Woolworth’s Earn and Learn program. Through this program we will be able to get new educational resources for our school.

From Wednesday 26th July to Tuesday 19th September we are collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers. You will get one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco and gift cards). Place the Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker onto a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet (which can also be downloaded, just head to the link below) and when it’s complete, the Sticker Sheet can be dropped into the Collection Box here at the school office.

https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/discover/earn-and-learn

At the end of the promotion we’ll be able to get some great new equipment. The range is extensive and offers lots of items ideal for our students – including resources for Maths, English, Science and some fantastic fun supplies for Arts & Craft, Sport and for our library. Last year through this program we purchased a variety of maths equipment including a teaching clock for every classroom, some stopwatches and sporting equipment.

You can get a sticker card from any Woolworths Supermarket and we will keep spare ones here in the office if you need an extra one. Please make sure you completely fill the sheet before you return it to school as partly filled sheets are not counted.

Book Week Character Parade

Once again during Book Week we will be having our annual character dress up parade. Students are invited to dress up as a character from a book. The parade will be held in the multi-purpose area on Thursday, 24th August from approximately 10:30am.

Write 4 Fun Competition

I have received an invitation for our students to participate in a writing competition. Entry is free and students can win money for themselves and the school as well as other great prizes. The competition is open to all students from Kindy - Year 12. Students can either write a poem or a short story. Entries are due by Friday 31st August. If your Joey’s child is interested in entering the competition, please ask them to see me for further details.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of fluency.

Strategy – Use Punctuation to Enhance Phrasing and Prosody

Clustering words together by using our knowledge of the spoken patterns in the English language and using punctuation enhances our understanding of what we read. Learning to read in phrases is important. The meaning of what is read is embedded in the chunk of words we read, not just in the isolated words themselves. The order and the way words are put together to make a sentence and then a paragraph create the meaning. It is important for readers to practice reading fluently in phrases.

Spelling:

Activity: Words within words

Write each spelling word and then write at least two words made from the same letters. For example: slide, side, lie, lid, led
