FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

With us now midway through our Catholic Education Week celebrations, it is with great pride and admiration that I congratulate Mrs Katherine Howell on her nomination for the Queensland Spirit of Catholic Education Awards. This award that was presented during a mass last Saturday at the Cathedral to mark the opening of Catholic Education Week, is a way to say thanks and appreciate ‘Mrs H’ for her dedication and all that she has contributed to both Joeys and Catholic Education. Kath is also a state finalist in the Queensland College of Teachers Excellence in Teaching Awards, so on behalf of the Joeys community Kath, I applaud you and all you have given to our school community and wish you all the best of luck.

I would also like to congratulate the Emmaus community on the wonderful production of their school musical, ‘Joseph’. I was lucky enough to attend last Friday night’s performance and was amazed at the quality of the show and very proud of the number of past Joey’s students who were on stage performing. Well done to all the Emmaus community and especially our own Mrs Sarah Kateifides who was the musical director for the performances. Well done to all involved.

We have an extremely busy time coming up this Saturday as we will be holding the Year 6 Car Wash in the school car park between 9:00am and 12:00pm. This will then be followed by our 9-10 years’ footballers taking part in the Capras Cup competition at Victoria Park from midday till approximately 5:00pm. The day then culminates in a Children’s Mass in OLHC church at 6:00pm. Even though this will be an extremely busy day, it would be lovely to see many of our community come along to celebrate Eucharist together.

As a part of our Catholic Education Week, we will be holding our annual Harmony Day celebration tomorrow at school. Our school Indigenous Liaison Officer, Simone Giles has been working very hard on organising all of the different elements that make this celebration so wonderful. The day will begin with a Prayer Assembly in OLHC church at 9:00am. All are welcome to attend.

Due to the hard work of Amanda Ryan and our awesome P&F we now have our path and personalised pavers laid down at our Haynes Street access to the school near the Kindy. We invite you all to come along and have a look and see some of the people who have ‘walked the path with us’ so to speak. The entrance is really starting to take shape and there looks to be opportunities to add many more names in the future.

Finally, Fr Chris Schick has passed on a message of thanks for all the prayers and support he has received from the Catholic Education community. Acting APRE, Mrs Bernadette Brennan has included this as an image at the beginning of the ‘Religious Matters’ part of our newsletter for all to view.

Rockhampton Athletics Trials

Joeys had a very successful two days last week at the Rockhampton Athletics Trials. Many of our students placed in their heats and some placed in the championship finals. Based on our enrolments we are in the B Schools pool. The boys won the B Schools shield for most points and the girls placed third in the same pool. Overall Joeys came second for the aggregate B Schools points. Gabrielle Yarrow, Braydon Unwin, Seth Carpenter and Jai Cass will progress to the next stage and compete at the Greater Rockhampton District Athletics Trials next week.

Throughout the two days the children conducted themselves with true sportsmanship and pride for our school. Many thanks to Miss Foster, the team manager, for ensuring all our competitors were rested, fed and made it to their events. Thanks also to Miss Agius, for her help in time keeping and recording during the carnival.

To conclude the carnival many of the students competed in the 4x100m relays. Below are a few photos of our successful relay teams and some of the boys with the B Schools shield.

ICAS

Term 2 and 3 is when ICAS competitions will take place. If your child has nominated to participate in any of these competitions, they will receive a copy of a previous test which they can use as a practice. These practice tests will be sent home as each test gets closer. They do not need to be returned to school – they are merely a way of helping your child prepare for the ICAS competition they have nominated for.

Under 8s Day

Our annual Under 8’s Day morning will take place at St Joey’s on Thursday 10th August. This is a day where we celebrate the learning and development of our younger students. The day will begin with a short liturgy in the multi-purpose area. Following the liturgy the children will be free to investigate the various hands on activities prepared by our Prep – Year 3 teachers. Parents are most welcome to attend this part of the day. After first break students will head back to class where they will complete activities with their class for the rest of the day. Students in Prep to Year 3 are invited to come along to this day in free dress. It is essential that this free dress consist of clothing which is sun safe (no sleeveless shirts), a school hat and fully enclosed shoes. If you are able to assist your child’s teacher on the day please let them know as soon as possible. If you have any questions about this day please don’t hesitate to see me.

Big Book Swap

Every second year during book week we have a big book swap morning. This is when we ask students to bring in an unwanted book (in good condition) and swap it for another pre-loved book. This activity has been very well supported in the past and I’m hoping it will be again this year. The aim is for every child to go home with a new pre-loved book. Any leftover books are distributed to classrooms and used as classroom readers. If you would like to donate a book (or multiple books) for this event, please drop them to the library to Mrs Roberts who will place them aside for our big book swap.

Woolworth’s Earn and Learn

Once again St Joseph’s has registered to be part of the Woolworth’s Earn and Learn program. Through this program we will be able to get new educational resources for our school.

From Wednesday 26th July to Tuesday 19th September we are collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers. You will get one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco and gift cards). Place the Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker onto a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet and when it’s complete, the Sticker Sheet can be dropped into the Collection Box here at the school office.

At the end of the promotion we’ll be able to get some great new equipment. The range is extensive and offers lots of items ideal for our students – including resources for Maths, English, Science and some fantastic fun supplies for Arts & Craft, Sport and for our library. Last year through this program we purchased a variety of maths equipment including a teaching clock for every classroom, some stopwatches and sporting equipment.

You can get a sticker card from any Woolworths Supermarket and we will keep spare ones here in the office if you need an extra one. Please make sure you completely fill the sheet before you return it to school as partly filled sheets are not counted.

Skoolbo Awards

Congratulations to the following students who have made a substantial improvement in their Skoolbo scores over the past few weeks:

Kade Scott, Lilly Beal, Connor Batley, Denver Bazzacco, Audrey Smith, Lachlan Applewaite, Isabel Harth, Bronson Wall, Saba Schoneveld, Zaeleigh Hannah, Jorja Hallam, Mackenzie Zanette, Kobe Hannah, Oliver Smith, Lilly McLoughlin, Azariah Morrison, Katelyn Whiting, Ashlea Styles, Linkin Richardson-Burge, Angelina Halil, Mia Jahnke and Curtis Seierup.

Keep up the good work.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of accuracy.

Strategy – Flip the Sound

Children use their knowledge of letter sounds to decode words by trying out or ‘flipping’ the different sounds a letter can make until they hear a word they recognise. For example, the letter ‘a’ can make a long a sound or a short a sound. Students can flip between both sounds to help them decode words.

Spelling:

Activity: Syllables

Write out your spelling words but put spaces in between the letters that break up the syllables. For example, el e phant. Students should recognise that each syllable contains a vowel.

Deanne Senini

CLASSROOM NEWS

PREP M

Greetings from Prep M! We hope you all had a lovely restful break over the holidays. It’s been a busy start back to Term 3 in our Prep classroom.

Julie, an Education Officer from RACQ came to visit and taught us about the 3 P’s- Pedestrian, Play and Passenger. We learnt to Stop, Look, Listen and Think when crossing the road. We also talked about safe places to play and the importance of getting in the car using the safety door and remembering Slip, Clip, Clap when putting on our seatbelt.

We were very excited to celebrate Science Week! The upper school students came to visit us to see what we had learned about Sustainability. We created a healthy and polluted waterway for them to investigate, showcased our artistic abilities by creating Nature People and identified living and non-living things.

After lunch it was our turn to visit the upper school and see their wonderful ideas and creations around being sustainable. We even got to explore a scientific exhibition from CQ University. Such an exciting, busy day!

As we settle into the term, we are wondering about prayer with a visit from Prayer Bear to our homes, exploring the magic of Fairy-tales, learning new mathematical concepts, Under 8’s Day and our first school excursion to the Pilbeam Theatre to see “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt”. It’s going to be another fantastic term of learning, faith and opportunity!
