FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

With the 2017 Challenge Cup concluding late last week, I would just like to mention how proud I am of the efforts of our netball & football teams. With our footballers & netballers placing 2nd & 7th respectively, I thought I should mention that Joeys came third out of the 29 schools in the Rockhampton Diocese. Congratulations to both Sacred Heart Yeppoon and St Pat's Emerald who placed 1st & 2nd, but I must point out that these schools are significantly larger than our own. Our football team continued to achieved some quite large milestones this year as they made the rugby league final for the third time in five years and have not lost a pool game in the last six years ensuring a top four finish at the carnival in each of those six years. Well done. However, what I am most proud of though was the way in which our students competed at the event. I realise that this is a really big call, but I believe that both teams of students this year were the best-behaved and showed the most sportsmanship and determination of any group I have attended with. The school staff have always held high standards for the behaviour of our students and both teams met and easily exceeded these expectations.

Well done to the parents, students and especially Mrs Tranberg, Miss Agius and Mrs Brennan for all your efforts in preparation for the event. You all represented our great school beautifully. Please know that for a school with just over 350 students, coming third overall is a tremendous achievement. I am hoping sometime in the not too distant future that we will come home with the major overall Challenge Cup trophy.

Congratulations to the McCrohon family who celebrated Year 2H student, Cooper’s baptism in Our Lady Help of Christians Church last weekend. Well done to the entire family as Cooper takes a huge step in his life long journey with Christ.

Next Wednesday afternoon on the 26th of July, we will be holding our first 2018 St Joseph’s Fete Meeting at 5:00pm. Please come along and contribute in any way possible as we prepare for next year’s big event. All are welcome to attend.

Finally, well done to the Queensland team last Wednesday night. There was never a doubt that they could do it. That was Queensland’s third series in a row and most likely on our way to winning at least eight in a row again.

We would love to have you join us.

Peer Support

We are starting our Peer Support sessions this week. The whole school will be working together in their Peer Support groups. These groups consist of 1 or 2 Year 6 Leaders with approximately 10-11 students from Prep to Year 5. Session One is about getting to know everyone in the group, setting rules for working well together and looking at what Peer Support is all about. We recommend that you talk to your children about Peer Support every week, as it will help them at home and at school.

JUNIOR TOUCH FOOTBALL

Junior Touch Season 2017

The Rockhampton Junior Touch Football Competition 2017 season commences on Saturday 19th August at the Cyril Connell Fields, North Rockhampton. The season runs to Saturday 18th November 2017 with breaks for school holidays.

The entire cost for the season is $60 per player with the third family member free. There is no extra to pay and the school will provide a playing shirt, which is to be returned to the team coach at the end of the season.

We rely on parent volunteers to coach our teams.

Each team must have an adult coach or manager. If there are insufficient coaches - teams will not be nominated. St Joseph’s has traditionally had a strong representation in this sport and hopefully with your support, this year will be no exception. Please consider helping out, even if you are new to the sport, there is a lot of help available for coaches.

Coaches and Managers need to have a current Blue Card, if you are not the holder of a Blue Card the school office will be able to assist with this.

If you have any queries, please see Kerrie Tennyson at school.

Nomination forms went home Tuesday 17-7-17

and are to be returned by Tuesday 25-7-17.

ICAS

Term 2 and 3 is when ICAS competitions will take place. If your child has nominated to participate in any of these competitions, they will receive a copy of a previous test which they can use as a practice. These practice tests will be sent home as each test gets closer. They do not need to be returned to school – they are merely a way of helping your child prepare for the ICAS competition they have nominated for.

Save the Date - Under 8s Day

Our annual Under 8’s Day morning will take place at St Joey’s on Thursday 10th August. This is a day where we celebrate the learning and development of our younger students. The day will begin with a short liturgy in the multi-purpose area. Following the liturgy, the children will be free to investigate the various hands on activities prepared by our Prep – Year 3 teachers. Parents are most welcome to attend this part of the day. After first break students will head back to class where they will complete activities with their class for the rest of the day. Students in Prep to Year 3 are invited to come along to this day in free dress. It is essential that this free dress consist of clothing which is sun safe (no sleeveless shirts), a school hat and fully enclosed shoes. If you are able to assist your child’s teacher on the day, please let them know as soon as possible. If you have any questions about this day, please don’t hesitate to see me.

Big Book Swap

Every second year during book week we have a big book swap morning. This is when we ask students to bring in an unwanted book (in good condition) and swap it for another pre-loved book. This activity has been very well supported in the past and I’m hoping it will be again this year. The aim is for every child to go home with a new pre-loved book. Any leftover books are distributed to classrooms and used as classroom readers. If you would like to donate a book (or multiple books) for this event, please drop them to the library to Mrs Roberts who will place them aside for our big book swap.

Science Week

Last week we celebrated Science Week which culminated with Science Day on Friday. The theme for Science Week 2017 is Future Earth. All through the week the kids were buzzing and very excited about what they were doing in class for science week. During lunch times we showed The Lorax in the library which was extremely popular with most sessions attracting up to 90 students.

I would like to thank and acknowledge staff from CQU who happily turned up on Friday with 5 very informative and fun activities for the students to do. I’d also like to thank the staff from Emmaus College who at the end of last term came and worked with our Year 6 students to help with their displays for Friday.

I would also like to thank the Joey’s teachers for the time and effort they put in to organising relevant engaging activities for Science Week. The children really seemed to enjoy the week and learned a lot both from their teachers and from other students.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of comprehension.

Strategy – Ask Questions Throughout the Reading Process

Readers are actively involved in reading by asking themselves questions before, during and after reading thus increasing their comprehension of the text. Readers who ask questions during reading are actively engaged and thus tend to remember important details and information. While asking questions, readers are monitoring their comprehension.

Spelling:

Activity: Stick Words

Form your words using paddle pop sticks, toothpicks or pipe cleaners
