FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

Last week a number of our students received the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist during some lovely celebrations. We welcomed Bishop Michael McCarthy who, along with Father Matt, took part in the celebration of these sacraments. I would like to congratulate these students, and their families, for making the commitment to their faith journey and accepting their place in the wider Catholic community. Congratulations to Mrs Bernadette Brennan on all the work she has done in the preparation of these students and families.

My sincere thanks to all of the parents and staff for a very successful school athletics carnival last week. It was wonderful to see parents able to attend and cheer on the children and equally pleasing to witness the behaviour of the children and the great way in which they all participated. The carnival had a lovely relaxed, community feeling to it. Again, a special thank you and congratulations to Mrs Brennan for the organisation that made the carnival a success. Well-done Daly House on becoming 2017 Athletics Champions.

I would also draw your attention to the fact that enrolment applications for Prep 2018 close at the end of this term. If you are yet to lodge your application, or know of a friend yet to do so, please call into the office and collect the paperwork as soon as possible.

A reminder that Semester 1 Reports will be sent home this Friday so please keep an eye out for them in your children’s school bags.

Finally, thank-you for your support as a parent body in what has been a very busy term. Term 2 has seen our Joeys community take part in OSHC, Workplace Health & Safety and Catholic Ethos audits, a Block Grants Authority application, NAPLAN Testing, athletic and cross country carnivals, ANZAC celebrations, SR&I surveys and our One Day Validation visit plus many more events. Your support for both my staff and myself personally in all of these endeavors is always greatly appreciated.

Don’t Forget …

  • QLD to win State of Origin 2, Wednesday 21st June
  • Semester 1 Reports go home, Friday 23rd June
  • Term 2 concludes (no inter-school sport), Friday 23rd June
  • Term 3 commences, Monday 10th July
  • QLD to wrap up the State of Origin Series in Game 3, Wednesday 12th July
  • Challenge Cup, Wednesday-Friday 12th-14th July
  • Rockhampton School Athletics, 17th-18th July
  • 2018 Prep Enrolment Interviews, Weeks 2-4 Term 3

JOEYS TOUCH FOOTBALL

The Junior Touch football season will commence on the 19th August 2017.

We would like to purchase extra playing shirts so all teams are in the same shirt.

To be able to do this we are asking for sponsorship from businesses.

Names and contact details would be printed on the back of a set of playing shirts. We are looking at purchasing 6 complete sets of 12 shirts per set.

Sponsorship would be as follows:

GOLD – (single business name on shirt) – 12 shirts at $444 per set
SILVER – (two business names per shirt) – 12 shirts at 2 x $222
BRONZE – (three business names per shirt) - 12 shirts at 3 x $148

If you are interested in sponsoring please contact Kerrie Tennyson at school or via email kerrie_tennyson@rok.catholic.edu.au.

Nomination forms for individual players will be going home early term three.

We rely on parent volunteers to coach and manager our teams. Please consider helping out, even if you are new to the sport, there is a lot of help available for coaches. Each coach/manager will be required to have a Blue Card; the school will be able to assist with this.

Thank you
Kerrie Tennyson

CURRICULUM NEWS

ICAS

Term 2 and 3 is when ICAS competitions will take place. If your child has nominated to participate in any of these competitions, they will receive a copy of a previous test which they can use as a practice. These practice tests will be sent home as each test gets closer. They do not need to be returned to school – they are merely a way of helping your child prepare for the ICAS competition they have nominated for.

Save the Date - Under 8s Day

Our annual Under 8’s Day morning will take place at St Joey’s in Term 3 on Thursday 10th August. This is a day where we celebrate the learning and development of our younger students. The day will begin with a short liturgy in the multi-purpose area. Following the liturgy, the children will be free to investigate the various hands on activities prepared by our Prep – Year 3 teachers. Parents are most welcome to attend this part of the day. After first break students will head back to class where they will complete activities with their class for the rest of the day. Students in Prep to Year 3 are invited to come along to this day in free dress. It is essential that this free dress consists of clothing which is sun safe (no sleeveless shirts), a school hat and fully enclosed shoes. If you are able to assist your child’s teacher on the day, please let them know as soon as possible. If you have any questions about this day, please don’t hesitate to see me.

Self Defence Lessons

As many of you would know, last year we employed Mrs Ashleigh McNae from McNae’s Taekwondo to provide our Year 3 – 6 students with a 4-week self-defence course. This activity was a huge success with the students learning simple yet effective ways of getting themselves out of unwanted arm grabs and shoulder grabs. This course complements the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum which talks about staying safe and being able to exit from unwanted and unsafe scenarios.

This year has seen our school develop a plan to implement the new Australian Health Curriculum. As part of that whole school planning we have invited Mrs McNae back to St Joseph’s to implement her self-defence course with all Year 4 and Year 6 students. Our hope is that this will continue into the future and all students when they are in Year 4 and Year 6 will be offered the opportunity to learn and practise these protective life saving skills.

This year these sessions will occur during normal Health lessons in weeks 2-5 of Term 3. A note has gone home with all Year 4 and Year 6 students. Please complete the permission forms and return them to school as soon as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns about this activity, please come and see me.

Big Book Swap

Every second year during book week we have a big book swap morning. This is when we ask students to bring in an unwanted book (in good condition) and swap it for another pre-loved book. This activity has been very well supported in the past and I’m hoping it will be again this year. The aim is for every child to go home with a new pre-loved book. Any leftover books are distributed to classrooms and used as classroom readers. Although this event won’t be happening until next term (22nd August), it takes time to collect the books so if you would like to donate a book (or multiple books) for this event, please drop them to the library to Mrs Roberts who will place them aside for our big book swap.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Last week you should have received a letter explaining our parent teacher interview process. If you would like a formal interview with your child’s teacher please complete the form and return it to school by the end of this term. Once the requests are processed you will receive a letter with your interview times. Interviews will be held next term on Tuesday 18th July and Wednesday 19th July. Please note that your interview confirmation letter will not go out until early next term as I will be undergoing surgery during Week 9 and will consequently be on leave for the rest of Term 2.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of fluency.

Strategy – Adjust and Apply Different Reading Rates to Match Text

Readers use a constant rate for most texts they read but learn to use different speeds based on the types of tasks and their purpose for reading. Some readers have yet to learn how to adjust their reading rate to match their purpose for reading. Because these readers read everything at the same rate, they struggle to complete and comprehend lengthy readings.

Spelling:

Strategy: Spell-er-size

Spell your words as you do jumping jacks. For each letter do one jumping jack. Then do one last jumping jack as you say the whole word you just spelled.

Deanne Senini

CLASSROOM NEWS

PREP

This term we have had some very exciting events happen down in Prep including our very first Sports Day, Mother’s Day Picnic, A visit from Questacon and a very special visit from Bishop Michael and Father Matt to name a few.

In History we have been discussing the Past Vs the Present and discussing how things have changed over time. We did a fantastic job at collecting items to add to our class ‘Museum’. We really enjoyed exploring how things had changed and comparing to what we have now.

Our very first sports day was full of excitement. We all showed fantastic sportsmanship and contributed points to our house colours. We participated in 60m sprints, ball games and novelty races.

Our Mother’s Day picnic was a lovely afternoon where we could spend some time with our Mum’s and Grandma’s to show them how special they are to us. We made pasta necklaces, lots of colouring in and presented them with some very special Mother’s day gits that we had been working hard on.

We also received a visit from The Questacon Circus. This was a team from Canberra who came and spoke to us about many different science topics such as Friction and Solids Vs Liquids. They demonstrated lots of experiments and even chose some of us to help them conduct their experiments.

We also received a very special visit from Bishop Michael and Father Matt. They came and introduced themselves to us and spent some time talking to our classes.

We hope everyone enjoys your holidays and look forward to Term3!

YR 1

1F

This term, 1F students have had a very busy time. Learning has been exciting and hands on. We have listened intently to the people who have come into the school to share their passion. The local firemen visited our classroom and made a very important point to the students that a fireman who is dressed up in protective clothing is there to help us. Even though they have a husky, breathy voice when they call to you they are not someone to be frightened of and you shouldn’t hide. We are looking forward to seeing the enormous fire truck when they return.

The Shell Questacon science team came on a very cold day and showed us some super cool investigations. The students were involved in these interesting experiments. The Questacon team explained that science starts with a question and some ideas of what might happen, which are called predictions. Therefore, anyone can be a scientist. Even us!

During Religion, Year 1 students have wondered about God and His creations. We went outside and listened to and looked at God’s creations around our school. We shared our ideas and meditated quietly for a while. Then at a recent mass at Our Lady Help of Christians church we also listened intently to Bishop Michael share stories about the wonders of God. Lastly, on Friday Week 10, it is our turn to perform the liturgy. The students are very excited and think it is fantastic. I hope you are able to join us.

The sports carnival was a great day at Emmaus College! The students practiced their ball games prior to the day and at the carnival looked very professional indeed. They supported and cheered on their fellow students all day. It was a day to remember.

The students have enjoyed the term. I hope they all have a great holiday and are ready to return to more active schooling next term.

Last week we had our Sports day at Emmaus and what fun we had. I was very proud of the children who participated and received points for their teams. The children were extremely well behaved on what was a very very long day.

First week back next term Year One will be participating in Science Week. Our focus will be on what we can and can’t recycle and f we can’t recycle can we reuse the item? At the end of the week we will have created some wearable art to demonstrate our understanding of sustainability for our future earth. We will be asking for the Year 1 families to send their washed recyclable items into to school this week in anticipation for a quick start in Term 3.

Tuesday this week we had another visit from the Fire brigade. This time they visited with their big red truck to give us an up close and personal view of the workings of a fire truck.

I wish you all a relaxing and enjoyable two weeks with your most precious of gifts – your children. I will be enjoying my time out and getting myself ready for an extremely busy Term 3.

What a busy term we have had. Here are some of the things we have worked on:

  • In Religion lessons we have been learning about the Sacrament of Baptism.
  • In English we have been writing narratives. We’ve been using ‘sizzling starts’ to hook the reader and make our writing more interesting. We’ve also built up our reading stamina and are proud to say that most of us can maintain reading stamina for over 10 minutes now!
  • During Mathematics we learned about using Australian currency, reading the time using digital and analogue clocks and addition and subtraction. We loved completing our first investigation called ‘Show Time’ where we had to plan a day at the show for us and a friend using a price list, a show guide and a $60 budget.
  • During Science lessons we have been investigating push and pull forces and had a visit from Shell Questacon.
  • We delved right into using our new Chromebooks and are having a ball using Google Slides and Google Docs as well as the apps we were familiar with on the ipad- Seesaw, Matific and Skoolbo!
  • In HaSS we’ve focused on identifying places within our school that have changed over time and why. We’ve also investigated significant places to us within Australia and had a blast designing and re-creating a landmark for Technology.

What a great term we have had. In Religion we have learnt how all people have the freedom to make choices and the choices made can help people to grow in their relationship with God and others. This was also our theme for our prayer assembly on Friday.

Students used their understanding of materials and the behaviour of heat to suggest explanations for everyday observations in our Melting Moments Science unit. We were also fortunate this term to take part in the Questacon Science Circus and attend a forensic science presentation.

As part of technology we have been designing magazine covers and learning about coding using the Tynker program to complete a project on the chrome books.

In The Arts we presented an art piece to the class discussing the choices of design and application.

As part of our HASS unit we are focussing on Geography and learning to label maps of Australia and the world as well as examining some of Australia’s natural and human features.

With our daily/weekly English and Mathematic studies we have been very busy learning. We would like to wish everyone a happy restful holiday break.
