FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

This week we farewell Mrs Leonie Mooney as she commences maternity leave on Friday. I am sure that we all wish Leonie God’s blessings as she prepares for the arrival of a new addition to her family. Thank you Leonie for all you have offered to our Year 4 students and we look forward to seeing you back in the not too distant future.

Mrs Senini will also be taking some well-earned leave beginning this week, but I am sure she will be back, well rested for the commencement of Term 3. We wish Mrs Senini all the best for her leave.

As you may be aware, Fr Chris Schick is currently in Brisbane undergoing some serious treatment for health issues. Fr Chris is a much beloved, former Parish Priest for OLHC church and St Joseph’s school. A special Novena Prayer has been distributed throughout the Diocese to Pray on Fr Chris’ behalf from the 11th – 19th of June. Acting APRE, Mrs Brennan will be including the Novena in this week’s newsletter and I have also posted a digital copy to the school app earlier this week. Please join us in sending these prayers to Fr Chris.

Our hard working P&F will be running another Meal Deal next Wednesday the 21st of June. Information about ordering will be sent home this week.

Just a reminder that our Outside of School Hours Care runs vacation care over the school holidays and currently has some vacancies available for the upcoming break. Our OSHC also has some spots available for their After School Hours Care program on weekday afternoons during the school term. If you are interested, please come and collect some information from the school office or contact Mrs Chelsea Holden on 49214922 after 2:00pm weekday afternoons.

CURRICULUM NEWS

Important Curriculum Dates – Term 2

Wednesday 14th June

ICAS - Spelling

Wednesday 14th June

ICAS - Writing

ICAS

Term 2 and 3 is when ICAS competitions will take place. If your child has nominated to participate in any of these competitions, they will receive a copy of a previous test which they can use as a practice. These practice tests will be sent home as each test gets closer. They do not need to be returned to school – they are merely a way of helping your child prepare for the ICAS competition they have nominated for.

Save the Date - Under 8s Day

Our annual Under 8’s Day morning will take place at St Joey’s in Term 3 on Thursday 10th August. This is a day where we celebrate the learning and development of our younger students. The day will begin with a short liturgy in the multi-purpose area. Following the liturgy, the children will be free to investigate the various hands on activities prepared by our Prep – Year 3 teachers. Parents are most welcome to attend this part of the day. After first break students will head back to class where they will complete activities with their class for the rest of the day. Students in Prep to Year 3 are invited to come along to this day in free dress. It is essential that this free dress consists of clothing which is sun safe (no sleeveless shirts), a school hat and fully enclosed shoes. If you are able to assist your child’s teacher on the day, please let them know as soon as possible. If you have any questions about this day, please don’t hesitate to see me.

Self Defence Lessons

As many of you would know, last year we employed Mrs Ashleigh McNae from McNae’s Taekwondo to provide our Year 3 – 6 students with a 4-week self-defence course. This activity was a huge success with the students learning simple yet effective ways of getting themselves out of unwanted arm grabs and shoulder grabs. This course complements the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum which talks about staying safe and being able to exit from unwanted and unsafe scenarios.

This year has seen our school develop a plan to implement the new Australian Health Curriculum. As part of that whole school planning we have invited Mrs McNae back to St Joseph’s to implement her self-defence course with all Year 4 and Year 6 students. Our hope is that this will continue into the future and all students when they are in Year 4 and Year 6 will be offered the opportunity to learn and practise these protective life saving skills.

This year these sessions will occur during normal Health lessons in weeks 2-5 of Term 3. A note has gone home with all Year 4 and Year 6 students. Please complete the permission forms and return them to school as soon as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns about this activity, please come and see me.

Big Book Swap

Every second year during book week we have a big book swap morning. This is when we ask students to bring in an unwanted book (in good condition) and swap it for another pre-loved book. This activity has been very well supported in the past and I’m hoping it will be again this year. The aim is for every child to go home with a new pre-loved book. Any leftover books are distributed to classrooms and used as classroom readers. Although this event won’t be happening until next term (22nd August), it takes time to collect the books so if you would like to donate a book (or multiple books) for this event, please drop them to the library to Mrs Roberts who will place them aside for our big book swap.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Last week you should have received a letter explaining our parent teacher interview process. If you would like a formal interview with your child’s teacher, please complete the form and return it to school by the end of this term. Once the requests are processed you will receive a letter with your interview times. Interviews will be held next term on Tuesday 18th July and Wednesday 19th July. Please note that your interview confirmation letter will not go out until early next term as I will be undergoing surgery during Week 9 and will consequently be on leave for the rest of Term 2.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of comprehension.

Strategy – Blend Sounds; Stretch and Reread

Children should be taking the individual sounds of letters and blending them together to read a word accurately. Beginning readers often learn their sounds in isolation. The leap from knowing letter sounds to reading words can be daunting. Taking the isolated sounds and blending them together can be a first step to becoming a reader for many children. As they are blending the sounds together encourage them to listen for a word they might have heard before. This will help them work out the word they are stuck on.

Spelling:

Strategy: Scrabble

Use Scrabble tiles to spell out your spelling words. For a little extra maths practice figure out the value of each of your words.

Deanne Senini

CLASSROOM NEWS

1M

1M’s Amazing Adventures

And so here we are nearly at the end of another Term. The year ones have had some incredible times this term including:

  • Our Mother’s Day Prayer Assembly – we evoked a lot of emotions from not only our own Mum’s there but from everyone in the Church. We love our mum’s and we were excited and happy to show them how much and to say thank you for being just who you are.

  • Visiting fireman – Mrs McCutcheon, Miss Brosnan and the Year Ones were very excited to see our visitors turn up to tell us all about fire safety. Fireman Steve and Fireman Warwick explained how we can stay safe in an emergency. Fireman Warwick even got dressed in his special fire safe uniform. We will be having a follow up visit in the last week of this term when they will be back with their fire truck.

  • During our HASS unit we studied Natural, Managed and Constructed environments. We got to make our own diorama explaining what one of these environments was and how we take care of it. We completed these on our own. Mrs McCutcheon was very happy with us.

  • Last week we had the ladies from Questacon Circus entertain us with many different science experiments. We are all buzzing with science knowledge and words and are ready to take on the science world when we get older.

And in between all these fun activities we worked hard with our school work. We have been working on our new programs on our Chrome books including Matific and Skoolbo. Mrs McCutcheon has stuck our logons on the back of our reading logs so we can enjoy these programs at home.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Congratulations to the following students and staff who will celebrate their birthday this week. They are: Quinn Rooney (1M), Harrison Yarrow (2H), Lachlan McHugh (PW), Nicholas Brook (4M), Sienna Muir (5T), Adelaide Seierup (3T) and Jack Wyland (6F).

Have a great day.
