FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

Last Thursday our P&F association held a fund-raiser for Anthony & Rebecca Farr’s family. The generosity of our community and the support shown for The Fancy Farr Free Dress Day was truly humbling. I have always mentioned just how proud I am to be a part of a community that places so much emphasis on looking after those in need. We truly are a community that values the pastoral care and wellbeing of others. Our Joeys community is a true family.

In response to ‘being the someone to someone in need,’ our community generously raised $1700. To all those who supported the P&F by supporting this event, thank-you very much for your generosity. The P&F will again hold another fund-raiser for the Farr family in Week 10 of this Term by holding another Meal Deal day on Wednesday the 21st of June.

This week we will be welcoming visitors to our school who will be conducting a one-day school SR&I Validation Day. While we have done much preparation for this day, all the feedback we have received from our Catholic Ethos Audit, NSIT report and the various surveys conducted by our community members have all been extremely positive. I am sure this will also be the case tomorrow, as we will celebrate all that makes Joey’s such a great place and identify key items that we need to work on that will make us even better in the future.

In saying this, while I was looking through all of the data and creating a School Improvement Plan for the next few years, I was sent the following note written to me by Madalyn McKay from Year 4.

Even though we have a tremendous amount of tools and data at our disposal to analyze the many wonderful things our school offers the community, sometimes a simple, lovely note from one of our students can put a lot of things about our beautiful school into perspective. Thanks to Madalyn for such a wonderful note.

APRE REFLECTION

Common Good

What is ‘true community’? The common good is reached when we work together to improve the wellbeing of people in our society and the wider world. The rights of the individual to personal possessions and community resources must be balanced with the needs of the disadvantaged and dispossessed. At Joeys, we like to give priority to collaborating with the wider community to promote the ‘common good.’

RELIGIOUS MATTERS

Peer Support Training

On Monday and Tuesday this week, the Year 6 students participated in the Peer Support Training. The purpose of the training is to prepare the students for their role as Peer Support Leaders and highlight the structure of the Peer Support Program. It also assists in developing the skills, which are necessary for the effective facilitation of the program.

What is Peer Support?

The Peer Support Program provides a fun and engaging environment for young people to address social issues. Modules are designed to equip young people with skills to deal proactively with life experiences. The Peer Support Program promotes wellbeing, which encourages positive relationships, connectedness and sense of responsibility.

Once the leaders are trained, under the supervision of a teacher, they facilitate structured activities with multi-aged groups of up to 12 students. Once the program starts, an outline of the session for the week will be posted in the newsletter. Parents are invited to discuss with your child the activities, asking questions about the concepts and understandings they are developing each week.

Year 2H Prayer Assembly

This Friday 2nd June, Year 2H will be leading the prayer assembly in OLHC church at 11:30am. The year 2 students will be presenting ‘Live like Jesus’ themed assembly. Parents, families and friends of the school are all welcome to come along and share this prayer celebration.

ICAS

Term 2 and 3 is when ICAS competitions will take place. If your child has nominated to participate in any of these competitions, they will receive a copy of a previous test which they can use as a practice. These practice tests will be sent home as each test gets closer. They do not need to be returned to school – they are merely a way of helping your child prepare for the ICAS competition they have nominated for.

Questacon Science Circus

On Thursday the 1st June, the Questacon Science Circus will be visiting St Joseph’s. They will present three different interactive science sessions – one for Prep and Year 1, one for Year 2 and Year 3 and one for Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6. As part of this visit, each child receives a complimentary ticket for free entry to the Shell Questacon Science Circus’ public exhibition. This exhibition will be at CQU Community Sport’s Complex on Sunday, 4th June from 11 am – 4 pm. Admission for this event is adult $6, students/concessions $5, family $18, children under 5 free.

Save the Date - Under 8s Day

Our annual Under 8’s Day morning will take place at St Joey’s in Term 3 on Thursday 10th August. This is a day where we celebrate the learning and development of our younger students. The day will begin with a short liturgy in the multi-purpose area. Following the liturgy, the children will be free to investigate the various hands on activities prepared by our Prep – Year 3 teachers. Parents are most welcome to attend this part of the day. After first break students will head back to class where they will complete activities with their class for the rest of the day. Students in Prep to Year 3 are invited to come along to this day in free dress. It is essential that this free dress consists of clothing which is sun safe (no sleeveless shirts), a school hat and fully enclosed shoes. If you are able to assist your child’s teacher on the day, please let them know as soon as possible. If you have any questions about this day, please don’t hesitate to see me.

Self Defence Lessons

As many of you would know, last year we employed Mrs Ashleigh McNae from McNae’s Taekwondo to provide our Year 3 – 6 students with a 4-week self-defence course. This activity was a huge success with the students learning simple yet effective ways of getting themselves out of unwanted arm grabs and shoulder grabs. This course complements the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum which talks about staying safe and being able to exit from unwanted and unsafe scenarios. This year has seen our school develop a plan to implement the new Australian Health Curriculum. As part of that whole school planning we have invited Mrs McNae back to St Joseph’s to implement her self-defence course with all Year 4 and Year 6 students. Our hope is that this will continue into the future and all students when they are in Year 4 and Year 6 will be offered the opportunity to learn and practise these protective life saving skills. This year these sessions will occur during normal Health lessons in weeks 2-5 of Term 2. A note will go home this week with all Year 4 and Year 6 students. Please complete the permission forms and return them to school as soon as possible. If you have any questions or concerns about this activity, please come and see me.

Big Book Swap

Every second year during book week we have a big book swap morning. This is when we ask students to bring in an unwanted book (in good condition) and swap it for another pre-loved book. This activity has been very well supported in the past and I’m hoping it will be again this year. The aim is for every child to go home with a new pre-loved book. Any leftover books are distributed to classrooms and used as classroom readers. Although this event won’t be happening until next term (22nd August) it takes time to collect the books so if you would like to donate a book (or multiple books) for this event please drop them to the library to Mrs Roberts who will place them aside for our big book swap.

Skoolbo Achievement Awards

Congratulations to the following students who received certificates on assembly this week. These certificates were to acknowledge significant improvement in their Skoolbo scores. These students obtained significant personal best scores over the last week. Skoolbo is an app/website which St Joseph's uses right across the school. It assists students with improving both literacy and numeracy skills.

Congratulations to: Denver Bazzacco, Nate Barber, Harlem Pope, Layla Whittaker, William Farr, Cairon Smith, Taylor Dives, Cooper McCrohon, Oliver Smith, Mitchell Lentell, Kobe Hannah, Estelle Hunt and Lachlan Senini.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of fluency.

Strategy: Reread Text

To try to increase a child’s fluency they can reread a selection of text several times until they can read it smoothly, accurately and with expression. Rereading also assists a student when they are having trouble understanding a passage.

Spelling:

Strategy: Pyramid Words

This activity involves writing spelling words in a pyramid shape. Start with the first letter. On the next line write the first two letters. On the next line write the first three letters. Continue until you have written the entire word.

CLASSROOM NEWS

YR 5

We have been very busy in year 5 this term.

In Religion, we have created beautiful prayer journals.

Last week we had a visit from Fr Noel Milner who came to teach us about the history of prayer and the meanings behind some of the important prayers we say.

In HASS, the students have researched the History of Rockhampton and learnt about the Historic Buildings we have along Quay street. In response to developing Rockhampton for the future, the students have had their designer hats on and have created plans for a new theme-parks for Rockhampton and are beginning to replicate their plans with models of their parks. We have some very impressive models emerging.

In media arts, we have been investigating graffiti and street art and their purpose in society. We have discovered that there is some really impressive street art all over the world. We have created our own cityscape designs too.

We are hoping to have an expo in the last week of term for you to come and check out our masterpieces.

These sessions only take about five minutes and are available after assembly on a Monday morning with Deanne Senini, and on Tuesday afternoons from 2:30pm - 3:00pm. Sue Clarke will also be conducting induction sessions in the tuckshop, if you are helping out in there.
