FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

Welcome to Week 5 of our very busy Term 2. For those parents still wishing to take part in our SR&I survey, you still have three more days to do so before they close this Friday afternoon. All of the Year 3-6 students have taken part in the student surveys during school over the last 2 weeks. To have a more complete picture of St Joseph’s for our SR&I external team, we wish to have as strong of a representation of staff, students and parents as possible. To have your say, please do not hesitate to log on and take part in the survey before Friday

A reminder to all families that may have younger siblings and are looking to enrol at Joey’s for Prep in 2018, I strongly encourage you to drop into the office and pick up an enrolment package as soon as possible. In the last few years’ positions have been very competitive and with this in mind we need to know the number of siblings in order to properly prepare of the enrolment interview process that will begin in early Term 3. Please be aware that even if you have a child or children currently at St Joseph’s, we still follow school enrolment policy and interview all possible new students to the school.

Term 2 School Fees have been sent out a few weeks ago and are now due. Please see our Finance Secretary Mrs Megan Crosthwaite as soon as possible to make payment arrangements or book a time through the school office if you need to meet with myself. Thank-you in advance for your consideration in attending to this matter.

Prep parents are invited to attend a Parent Workshop on Oral Language Development presented by the school’s Learning Support Coordinator Kath Howell and your Prep Teachers Kirsty McLeod and Elli Whittaker. The Workshop will be held in the school library this afternoon at 5:30pm and cover the following topics

  • Children’s Speech and Language development - What skills are they expected to develop from 3 to 6 years old?
  • Language in the classroom – What kind of questions do teachers ask your children?
  • Strategies to improve your child’s speaking and listening skills at home to help them become better readers, spellers and writers.
  • How to promote your child’s language through books, games, conversations and following directions?

Well done to our NRL Development Cup team that played at Victoria Park last Friday. In what was a very successful day our team was victorious against both the Rockhampton Grammar School and St Anthony’s during the day on the way to qualifying for the Jake Granville Cup at the end of the day. Even though our team played extremely well, a strong Frenchville team defeated our valiant team in the final. Our team played with great heart, skill and sportsmanship throughout the day and again, Joey’s was by far the smallest school taking part in the A Division. Well done to the team in making the Rockhampton final.

Finally, a thank-you must go to the Islamic School of Canberra and their Principal David Johns whom I personally both wrote to and spoke with this week. David told me that his students from the ACT saw worrying reports about the effects of tropical Cyclone Debbie in the media late last Term and sent Joeys a care package a few weeks ago filled with cards containing prayers of support, care and concern. It was very touching to open the package and read all of the correspondents from their Prep to Year 6 students and it was wonderful to see another school take part in an outreach program in the same way that our very own community does.

This fits in very well as an example of our school theme this year.

APRE REFLECTION

Changing Times

The children in the sacramental program are experiencing first hand some changes that are occurring in our parishes. Sacramental meetings this year are with all the children and parents from the north-side parishes. Sometimes there are over 160 people gathering together for this formation. This experience allows our children and their families to build new relationships and widen the spiritual support network.

During this time of transition in our parishes we are seeking spiritual support to guide the welcoming and uniting of the three churches. All members of the community are invited to participate in saying the special prayer to Our Lady Help of Christians.

Have a wonderful week

SPORTING MATTERS

NRL Development Cup

Last Friday, 16 of our students competed in the NRL Development Cup at Victoria Park. The students represented SJPA proudly and with plenty of enthusiasm. Throughout the day, the team won two round games to qualify to play in the grand final against Frenchville State School. Even though we did not bring home the Jake Granville Trophy all players should be congratulated on their individual performances and the effort they put in to work and play together as a team. Thanks to Mr. Fitzgerald for coaching the team this year. Looking forward, these players will continue training in preparation for Challenge Cup later in the year.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of comprehension.

Strategy – Retell the Story

A story retelling usually includes characters, setting, problems and solution or the main ideas of the text. It involves telling what is important in the story without telling too much. Retelling helps readers recall what is happening in the story, develop a sense of story structure and become more accurate in monitoring their understanding. They can transfer this knowledge of story structure to their own story writing.

Spelling:
Strategy: Letter Writing

Write a friendly letter to a teacher or a friend using at least 10 of your spelling words. Underline the spelling words that you use. This activity is useful as it allows the student to use their spelling words in context. It will allow them to think about the meaning of their words.
