Newsletter Articles

FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

This Term, our school will be undertaking our five-year School Review and Improvement process.

Next week, families in our Joey’s community who receive their newsletter electronically will receive an invitation to take part in an online survey for our SR&I process this year.

If you do not receive your newsletter electronically, and you wish to take part in the survey process, please feel free to come into the school office and give your details so we can send you a link.

Surveys will be open on Monday, 8th of May and close on Friday the 19th of May.

Well done to our Cross Country team who competed at Kalka Shaded last week. We had some great results with nearly all of our students finishing in the top fifty in each age group. Many thanks to Mrs Brennan and Miss Black who have trained the team every Tuesday and Thursday morning over the last six weeks. Congratulations to all of our students who ran on the day, not just for their effort but also for the way in which they behaved and competed on the day.

Congratulations also to our boys OZTAG team who won their grand final last Friday. This was a mighty achievement for our little school. Good luck to any of our other teams involved in finals this Friday.

Finally, we have had to reschedule the meal deal that was planned for this week. The meal deal will now take place next Wednesday, 10th May. Fitting in with our 2017 school theme, ‘Be the someone to someone in need’, money raised from this P&F event will contribute to helping a local Rockhampton family in their time of need. I hope you will support this worthwhile cause.

Don’t Forget …

  • Rescheduled Meal Deal Wednesday, 10th May
  • NAPLAN Year 3 & 5 Testing, Tuesday the 9th – Thursday the 11th May
  • NRL Development Cup Gala Day, Friday 12th May
  • Mother’s Day, Sunday 14th May

Have a great week.

Regards

APRE REFLECTION

Many countries celebrate the first day of May with rituals to ensure good crops and plentiful harvest in the agricultural field. Other countries associate May Day with honoring the labor movement. In 1955, Pope Pius XII established the feast of St. Joseph the Worker to also be celebrated on May 1st. All these customs are associated with great works and this week we recall that we are God’s great work.

Jesus,
We turn to you,
our model and mentor of giving and receiving.
We recall how you poured yourself out in service to those who
crowded around you.
we bear in mind, too, how you withdrew to the mountain-sides to
pray and restore what was depicted in your body and spirit.
Grant us,
giver of gifts,
the wisdom, inspiration, and discipline to cultivate a healthy
balance between generous service to others and compassionate
care of ourselves.

Amen

DANIEL MORCOMBE CHILD SAFETY CURRICULUM

Week 3

Prep – Year 2

Students will:

  • Understand the meaning of persistence
  • Understand the need for persistence
  • Identify a group of safety helpers they can report to

Years 3 – 6

Students will:

  • Identify that planning ahead can help them stay safe
  • Plan avoidance or exit strategies that can be used to keep themselves safe

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of Fluency.

Strategy – Voracious Reading

Readers become more fluent by increasing the amount of reading they do. The more a child reads the better they will become at reading. Encourage your child to read as often as possible. Please make sure though they are reading good fit books (books which are not too easy or difficult for them).

Spelling:

Strategy: Highlight Words

Write your words. Read each one and highlight any chunk which may be difficult for you. This strategy is important as it allows students to deconstruct words and think about the sections they find difficult and need to focus more attention on.

Deanne Senini

CLASSROOM NEWS

A look at a day in 3T

We thought we would share what a typical day looks like in 3T.

We choose Thursday 4-5-17.

After we organise tuckshop, message bag and the collection of homework and library books, we come together to talk to God in prayer. In Mathematics we are looking at the 2x and 3x tables and questioning to help us with the format for NAPLAN. Next is discussing our daily choices as part of our Reconciliation Unit in Religion. At 10.15am we visit the library where we select three best-fit books, one-chapter book to read in the classroom and a spot book and interest book to take home to read at our leisure. At 11am we have lunch and enjoy playtime with our friends. We settle back into class time with quiet reading. Some students attend a small Oral Language group as some participate in whole class lessons based on their Oral Language needs. In English we participate in word study then form our ability reading groups and enjoy reading in small groups. After afternoon tea we read quietly to settle back into the class routine.

In Humanities and Social Sciences, we are revising for our end of unit assessment on Celebration and Commemoration. Thursday afternoon we also attend choir and hymns. To finish our day, we collect the message bag and reflect on our day concluding with a prayer.

Hope you enjoy a little insight into our day.

From Mrs Tennyson and the students of 3T.
