FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

As we enter our second week of the Term, can I take this opportunity to mention how proud I am to be a part of this lovely community. This was reinforced yesterday as we saw many of our student body come together to march on ANZAC Day. I quite often mention to our students that by marching on ANZAC Day we are not glorifying fighting or war, but we are showing our appreciation for all those who fought for the freedoms we enjoy today. I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s with people openly saying that; ‘We live in the lucky country.’ Even though we tend not to hear this term as much anymore, I still believe that we are very lucky to be living in this great land and the life we lead today is in no small part due to those who stood for what they believed in, many of which paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Greater love has no one that this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.’ John 15:13

LEST WE FORGET

In the next couple of weeks, all families in our Joey’s community will receive an invitation to take part in an online survey for our School Review and Improvement process this year. The surveys will be collated with responses from both our staff and student body to help form a report that will provide us with data that will help us celebrate the things we as a school community do well but to also identify the things we need to work on in the future. Working in partnership has always been an important part of the Joey’s community and if you can take the time to complete this survey it would be much appreciated.

This week Brooke Black, Ray Carrington and I will be attending the Diocesan Student Protection Conference. As we have mentioned many times, student protection is a top priority for our school community and we are constantly striving to make St Joseph’s a safe community, where care and concern for our students goes well beyond our curriculum studies. On Monday’s assembly I reintroduced Brooke, Ray and myself to our student body as our official student protection officers. I also pointed out that even though it is these three people’s names that appear on our student protection posters around the school, that in reality, it is our entire staff that is trained in, and committed to, the safety and wellbeing of our greatest asset, our children.

Just a friendly reminder that now Dance Fever has finished we will revert to our normal PE times on our curriculum roster. This means that on Tuesday it will be our Years 1-2 and 3T that are required to wear their sports uniform while on Wednesday it will be Years 4-6 and 3A. Preps continue to wear their uniform as per usual and now that we have returned from our Year 6 camp, our senior students are required to wear their senior shirts on a Friday only.

APRE REFLECTION

On Tuesday April 25th, all around Australia at various War memorials, people gathered at dawn or marches to honour those men and women who have gone off to war. It is a day of remembrance of the deaths and sufferings in war, the bravery of fighting men and women and the hope for the people of the world to live together in peace. We think of the people who currently live the reality of war each day. We remember those who are striving to bring peace to those parts of the world that are war torn at this time. This Anzac Day, let us pray for a peace filled world.

RELIGIOUS MATTERS

Project Compassion

The annual appeal at Joey’s was a huge success. The generosity of the children and the families is a testament to the compassion and faith our school community has in this appeal, that strives to promote justice and put an end to poverty. Your support will bring lasting changes to less fortunate communities around the world. The Joey’s Project Compassion appeal raised $1626.25, which will be forwarded to Caritas Australia.

SPORTING MATTERS

RDS Cross Country Trials

23 of our students were selected to participate in tomorrow’s Rockhampton and District Cross Country trials at Kalka Shades. After a very wet start to the training season last term, the students were able to hit the grass last week for a few solid practice runs. We wish all our competitors the best for a successful day on the course.

Hats for Athletics Season

In the lead up to the athletics carnival in week 9, PE lessons will focus on the various track and field events. It is imperative students have hats for PE lessons as most of the lesson will be on the oval. Please check your child has a clearly named school hat on their PE day.

Wednesday – Year 4, Year 5, Year 6 and 3A

Interschool Sport Fixtures

As Season A sport is coming to a close, several teams will not be competing on Fridays unless they are in finals. Please check the draws carefully for fixtures and finals.

Sports preference notes will be sent home soon for Season B sport. The choices are Rugby League, Netball and Hockey. Please discuss these options with your child and return the forms promptly so teams can be selected and training can commence.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN tests will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of Week 4 for Year 3 and 5 students. Teachers have been preparing the students for these tests and will continue to do so until week 4. NAPLAN tests are important for our school as it gives us a good ‘snapshot’ of the areas we are doing well in and also the areas where we as a school need to focus on in the future. The staff at St Joseph’s do our best to make this time as stress free as we can for the students. If you have any concerns about your child sitting the NAPLAN tests, please see me before the end of Week 2. I recommend that all students who are participating in the tests have a good night sleep the night before each test and a good hearty breakfast each morning of the tests.

DANIEL MORCOMBE CHILD SAFETY CURRICULUM

Week 2

Prep – Year 2

Students will:

  • Understand the meaning of persistence
  • Understand the need for persistence
  • Identify a group of safety helpers they can report to

Years 3 – 6

Students will:

  • Identify that planning ahead can help them stay safe
  • Plan avoidance or exit strategies that can be used to keep themselves safe

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of Accuracy.

Strategy – Using beginning and ending sounds

When reading a word, students should be using the sounds at the beginning of the word as well as at the end of the word. Often children will look at the beginning letter or letters and guess a word that may fit in the sentence without looking at the rest of the word. They may not even know there is an end to a word. It is important that children slow down enough to be able to look at the whole word before making a guess. They would then cross check the word to make sure it makes sense with the pictures and the rest of the sentence.

Spelling:

Strategy: Hidden Words

Draw a picture and write your spelling words in the picture. Try to hide the words.

Deanne Senini

CLASSROOM NEWS

Yr 4

Welcome back to another exciting term in Year 4. We have had a very busy start to the term and it does not look like it is going to slow down. This term in Literacy we will be focusing on writing narratives using the 7 Steps to Success program. Even though we only started looking at these last week, we are already seeing hints of some fantastic story writers in Year 4.

In Science this term the students will be participating in a unit called Plants in Action. In this unit students will investigate the process of germination, the stages in a plant’s life cycle and what plants need for growth. In HASS we will continue our It’s Not Easy Being Green unit from last term now turning the focus onto how we can look after our environment. Towards the end of the term we will start looking at life in Australia before Settlement.

Our excursion to the FLOW centre has been rescheduled for Tuesday the 9th of May. A new permission note will be sent home this week.

We hope you all have a fantastic term and feel free to drop in and see us at any time.
