FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

This week we have had some visitors to our school who are carrying out our National School Improvement Tool audit. Both Gayle Cunningham and Carmel Ryan have been looking at all facets of our Joey’s community in an effort to identify what we do very well and also to provide us with some feedback for potential future goals. It has been lovely to see both Gayle and Carmel meeting with so many staff, students and parents invested in our school and them seeing first hand just how wonderful our Joey’s community is.

One of, if not the biggest day in the Joey’s annual calendar is our St Joseph’s whole school Feast Day Mass followed by our Grandparents Morning Tea. This will be held next week on Friday, the 17th of March commencing with the mass in OLHC Church at 9:00am followed by the morning tea in the MPA till 11:00am.

We must also be aware that we share Friday’s mass with the Parish so I request that we leave the parking spaces directly outside the church vacant for the use of our parishioners.

Please remember that during all of these celebrations that we do not use the parking in the mall car park as retailers in the mall have previously complained that there is no parking for their patrons. In an effort to try and alleviate these parking issues we will be making parking available on the grassed area beyond the end of the Multi-Purpose Area for next Friday’s celebration.

Last weekend the North side Parish held an assembly to address issues facing the future of our combined faith communities with only one priest being available after Easter. At this assembly the following schedule of masses was proposed as a sustainable model moving forward.

OLHC Weekday mass

  • Friday, 9:00am

Weekend masses

  • Saturday 6:00pm Holy Family Church
  • Sunday 7:00am Our Lady Help of Christians Church
  • Sunday 9:00am Holy Family Church
  • Sunday 11:00am St Mary’s Church

This new schedule will not change our major school celebrations over the course of the year, however this will affect our school faith community moving forward in terms of our celebration of the Sacraments and of our Children’s Masses.

We will provide our school community with more information about these changes after the school’s leadership team has deliberated on the matter.

Our Year 6 class will be holding a free dress day on Thursday the 16th of March next week. The theme for the day will be ‘Sporting Colours’. Students are asked to wear colours from sporting teams they represent or support. As this is a fundraising activity for the Year 6 Camp Fundraiser, we are asking for a ‘gold coin’ from each of the students on this day.

Finally, farewell to Mrs Deanne Senini who is taking some well-earned long service leave for the last three weeks of the Term. Deanne will be taking part in a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land with Bishop Michael and Fr Noel Milner as her guide. We wish her a wonderful, faith filled experience.

Don’t Forget

  • P&F Meeting – Tues, 14th March
  • School Board Meeting – Wed, 15th March
  • Free dress day – Thurs, 16th March (Sporting Colours Theme)
  • St Joseph’s Day/Grandparents Day – Fri, 17th March
  • St Patrick’s Race Day – Sat, 18th March
  • Dance Fever Showcase – Tues, 21st March

Have a great week.

Regards

Bernard Fitzgerald
St. Joseph’s PA Acting Principal

APRE REFLECTION

Pope Francis says “Dear friends, Lent is the favourable season for renewing our encounter with Christ, living in his word, in the sacraments and in our neighbour. The Lord, who overcame the deceptions of the Tempter during the forty days in the desert, shows us the path we must take. May the Holy Spirit lead us on a true journey of conversion, so that we can rediscover the gift of God’s word, be purified of the sin that blinds us, and serve Christ present in our brothers and sisters in need. I encourage all the faithful to express this spiritual renewal also by sharing in the Lenten Campaigns promoted by many Church organizations in different parts of the world, and thus to favour the culture of encounter in our one human family. Let us pray for one another so that, by sharing in the victory of Christ, we may open our doors to the weak and poor. Then we will be able to experience and share to the full the joy of Easter.”

CURRICULUM NEWS

Capricorn Educational Resources (CER) Donation

I would like to acknowledge our Parent Community for supporting our school by purchasing school supplies from CER. I was presented with the news that Joey’s has over $2000 of store credit to spend at CER on resources for our school. I also thank the ladies from CER for offering this opportunity to our school.

Volunteer Inductions

There will be no volunteer inductions for the rest of this term as I will be on Long Service Leave. These inductions will be available again from the beginning of Term Two.

Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum

Throughout Semester One, our school will be implementing the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum with students in all year levels. The curriculum is based on principles of best practice in child safety education and centres around three key messages: Recognise, React and Report. Through a series of lessons, students will learn how to recognise, react and report when they are unsafe or find themselves in situations that can have a significant detrimental effect on their physical, psychological or emotional wellbeing. The Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum links very closely with the Australian Health Curriculum. Therefore these lessons will be delivered by Miss Tennille Kerrisk as part of our Health Curriculum on a Tuesday and Wednesday. The Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum has been mandated by our Diocese to be actively taught in all of the Rockhampton Catholic schools each year.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this program please don’t hesitate to contact either Miss Kerrisk, Mrs Senini or Mr Fitzgerald.

Information about the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum can be found via the link below:

http://www.education.qld.gov.au/child-safety-curriculum

Week 7 Lesson Objectives:

Prep – Year 2

Students will:

  • identify rules about the private parts of the body
  • devise strategies that could be used if feeling unsafe.

Years 3 - 4

Students will:

  • identify relationships between rules, laws and safety
  • discuss how rights, rules and responsibilities can all play a role in our ability to stay safe
  • consider if and when people should take responsibility for their own actions.

Years 5 – 6

Students will:

  • identify the private body parts using anatomical language
  • recognise appropriate and inappropriate touching of the private body parts.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of accuracy.

Strategy – Cross Checking……Do the pictures and /or words look right? Do they sound right? Do they make sense?

Cross Checking is a strategy for ensuring the words (and sometimes pictures) make sense and match the letters on the page. When a word doesn’t make sense in the sentence they cross check the word with the pictures and look at the letters and sounds in the word. This concept is usually used for beginner readers.

Spelling

Strategy: Definitions

Knowing and understanding the meaning of a word is an essential part of any spelling program. Whether your child looks up the word in a dictionary, asks you for the meaning, draws a picture to illustrate the meaning or writes out the meaning, it is important that they understand what their spelling words mean. They can then confidently use any new words in their speaking and writing.

CLASSROOM NEWS

News from Yr 4

We are off to a flying start in Year 4! We are settling in well to our Flexible Learning Environment and starting to develop an understanding of how we can work to the best of our ability.

In HASS, we have been reading ‘The Lorax’ and discussing environmental issues such as water pollution, air pollution and deforestation. This week we also recreated the river story demonstrating the journey of the river through a variety of scenarios and the effects of various human resources on the river system. In English we have been writing a variety of persuasive texts relating to environmental issues. Next week we will start writing our oral presentations.

One of our favourite activities in Year 4 is ‘Kicking It Maths’ and we are well on the way to improving our multiplication facts. We have also been busy estimating, adding larger numbers, measuring in millimetres and using problem solving strategies.

In Science we have been busy doing lots of hands on activities looking at forces around us. We are excited to start planning and creating our games demonstrating forces in action in a few weeks.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone at our Year Four Liturgy next Friday.

SCHOOL TOILET SAFETY

The students are very aware that the toilets are for just that… going to the toilet. They are not places to hang out with buddies, eat or play. They have one important purpose and that is what it should be used for.

Posters have been placed around the toilet blocks as a visual reminder to students. The safety message of ‘Recognise, React and Report’ is one well used at school. We would appreciate families discussing these themes and phrases at home. We need our students to understand and be aware that toilets are not a social place, that going to the toilet is private and that these procedures are put in place for the safety of themselves and others.
