FROM THE PRINCIPAL

I trust everyone had an enjoyable Easter break with their respective families and found the time to reflect on the true meaning of Easter; the sacrifice Christ made for us. As we commence our second term, we will be gathering this Saturday evening for the first of our Children’s Masses for the term. Mass will be celebrated in the church at 6.00pm this Saturday and we would love to see you come along and join with the school and parish community.

On Monday week 25th April we will be celebrating ANZAC Day and I would like to invite all of our students to join us in marching at the Rockhampton ANZAC Day March as part of the St. Joseph’s School representation. The spirit of the ANZACs also highlight a sense of sacrifice and self-giving and we have the opportunity to show our respect for the many men and women who fought and died in the wars so as we can have our current way of life. I would encourage everyone to come along and give up just a small portion of their day off in our own sense of service by marching.

A final reminder about tonight’s parent seminar, ‘The Focussed Child’, being hosted at St. Mary’s School.

The Focused Child – Parenting Seminar – Live at St Mary’s Library

Wed 13th April - 7pm

Self-esteem is such a vital cornerstone for a child’s mental health and happiness, yet it is also widely misunderstood. Practising psychologists Jan Gudkovs and Jan Dugan, have been working for over 40 years helping people with stress, their personal development and relationships.

They have compiled a book, “The Focused Child”, and will share with us their Top 10 Ways to build our kids self-esteem, to improve everyday concentration & focus.

Come along to the Library, for this P&F sponsored event tonight @ 7.00pm bring a plate for supper.

After a number of years at St. Joseph’s, I have decided to take some long service leave this year and will be taking three weeks off in Term 2 and three weeks later in the year in Term 3. As such I will be on leave this term in Weeks 3, 4 & 5. During this time our APRE, Bernard Fitzgerald, will be Acting Principal in my place. Please feel free to address any concerns you may have with Bernard.

Don’t Forget….

  • Wed 13/4 - Parenting Seminar – The Focussed Child.
  • Sat 16/4 - Children’s Mass;
  • Wed 20/4 - School Board Meeting;
  • Mon 25/4 - ANZAC Day March.

Have a great week.
Alan

APRE REFLECTION

During Lent, the Joey’s community raised money to help those in the world who are less fortunate than us through Project Compassion’s CARITAS Australia.

With the goal of raising $1 per week, per student over Lent we raised just over $1500 for a school of around 340 students. This is a fantastic achievement which also highlights the generosity of the Joey’s community during a time when we also held our Country Fair and Grade 6 were very busy raising money for their Leadership Camp. All class groups were competing for the prize of an extra 1 Hour of PE with Mr. Fitzgerald as the prize for the class that raised the most during Lent.

In first place raising $271.25 was the Grade 2 class. However, we were so impressed with both Grade 6 raising $251.55 and Grade 4 raising $221.30 that we have decided to award both those classes with an extra PE lesson as well.

Thank-you and well done to all whom generously contributed to this worth cause. Our spare change can make life changing improvements to the quality of life for those in third world countries that struggle for food, education, clothing and water.

A Child’ Prayer for the Poor

Jesus, you were the friend of the poor,
and you did all you could to make their life happy.
Please be with the poor people all over the world today.
I know that you want us to care about them.
Help those who are poor
and have no family or home or friends,
help those who are poor
and sick and lonely,
help those who are poor,
and have no job or money,
help those who are poor
and are far from their homeland.
Please help me to bring some joy
in kind and loving ways to those less fortunate than myself.

Amen.

I hope you have a great week.

Bernard Fitzgerald

DANIEL MORCOMBE CHILD SAFETY CURRICULUM

Week 1

This week I will be covering the correct anatomical names for body parts considered ‘private’. This is an important part of the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum. It is a topic, however which causes a lot of talk amongst students so your child may come home this week saying that they discussed terms associated with correct body parts. It is important that students know the correct anatomical names for their body parts to assist with child protection

Prep – Year 2
Students will:

  • identify private parts of the body
  • identify rules about the private parts of the body
  • devise strategies that could be used if feeling unsafe

Years 3 – 6
Students will:

  • identify the private body parts using anatomical language
  • recognise appropriate and inappropriate touching of the private body parts

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of Comprehension.

Strategy – Monitor and Fix Up

During this strategy readers stop and think if what they are reading makes sense, whether they understand what is happening in the story, or what the section they are reading is about. Readers who monitor their own reading know and use specific strategies when meaning breaks down and fix their reading to enhance their comprehension. It is important to ask your child what strategies they can use if they get stuck on a word or don’t understand something they have read.

Spelling:

Strategy: Alphabetical Order

This strategy is about students writing their spelling words in alphabetical order. This is an important skill as it assists them to think about the letters in their words.

Deanne Senini

Thanks,
Ray Carrington
