FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL
Tonight we culminate our Term 4 swimming program with our annual swim carnival at the Southside Memorial Pool. The carnival will commence at 5:30pm on the dot, with our youngest students and our grade 6 helpers in the middle 25m pool first. We realize that it is a school night so we ask that you be at the pool by 5:00pm in order to be ready for our carnival to begin as scheduled.
Our hard working P&F Association will be running a BBQ for dinner as the carnival does tend to be run over the usual evening meal period.
As the majority of our Year 6 students will be at an Emmaus orientation day on Thursday, age championship medals and the overall trophy winner will be presented in the MPA on Friday morning at a whole school assembly.
Well done to Mrs Bernadette Brennan for what I know in advance will be a great carnival.
Classes are starting to prepare for our annual Presentation Night which will be held on Thursday night next week. Please look for individual correspondence from your child’s teacher as to what may be needed for the evening. We will begin with our Kindy kids first but please remember our big four awards are handed out at the end of the evening. A lack of chairs have sometimes been an issue, so if you are able to bring one along that may help alleviate the problem.
A reminder that the theme is ‘Carols by Candle Light’ and the special LED candles can be purchased for $3.00 from the classroom teacher.
It should be a wonderful night and I can’t wait to see the multi-coloured candles when the sun finally decides to set.
Please also take the time to peruse the Fee Discounts – 2017 Initiative insert from the Diocesan Catholic Education Office that has been included in this newsletter.

APRE REFLECTION
WHEN THE DOORS CLOSE – WHAT WILL YOU DO WHEN THE YEAR OF MERCY FINISHES?
From November 20, the Holy Door that Pope Francis opened 12 months ago will close and the Extraordinary Year of Mercy will end. Pope Francis continually reminds us of our Christian calling to go out and be witnesses of mercy. The Year of Mercy has provided our whole church with the chance to be renewed in this mission and to become more aware of Christ in our midst. The greatness of this year is that it was not only a call to experience God’s mercy but to experience the exercising of mercy. As this Year of Mercy is ending and the door closes, God opens a window. Let’s keep this window open to the mercy that this year has allowed us to experience.
Gracious God, you are full of mercy and compassion.
As we come to the end of the Year of Mercy
may it not be an end to mercy
but only a beginning,
where we continue to show love,
forgiveness and compassion to all.
We ask this prayer through Jesus our Lord.
Amen

RELIGIOUS MATTERS
No Prayer Assembly
Due to our final Children’s Mass for 2016 being held this weekend, there will be no class led prayer assembly in OLHC Church this Friday morning.
Final Children’s Mass for 2016
Our final Children’s Mass with the Our Lady Help of Christians Parish will be held this Saturday evening the 19th of November. It would be lovely to have as many of the Joey’s community come along to celebrate. It would be especially great to have as many of our Year 6 students as possible as it will be their last mass as St Joseph’s Park Avenue students. Hope to see you there.
‘Vinnies’ Christmas Hampers – Term 4 Joeys Giving Plan
As a school community we are continuing to collect items for the ‘Joey’s Christmas Hamper Appeal’ over the next two weeks. Families are asked to donate an item each week to their child’s classroom hamper where possible. Please ensure that all items have an expiry date that would reach into early 2017 allowing ample time for the St Vincent DePaul society to distribute the food to those who are less fortunate than us in our own local community.
If you are able, please help support this worthwhile cause.
Peer Support – ‘Moving Forward’ Last Session
This is the last session of the Peer Support module Moving Forward. In this week’s final session of the Peer Support module children will reflect on what they have learned over the past seven weeks. The students will make a cube to remind them to draw on their strengths, achievements and people who support them when faced with challenging situations. These protective factors promote confidence and motivate students to approach new situations where they can then apply the Pause, Plan, Proceed Model.

SPORTING MATTERS
2016 Swimming Carnival
Our annual St Joseph’s Park Avenue swimming carnival will be held this Wednesday, the 16th of November at the Southside Pool.
The carnival will be held in the evening, commencing at 5:30pm sharp with the Prep races and finish at approximately 8:00pm. The 25m races will be held first in the short course pool. Following the completion of all 25m races we will commence the 100m and 50m races in the main pool. The program will be completed with the open house relays.
As it may be a late night for some of our younger students, age championship medallions will be presented in the MPA at 8:35am Friday morning in front of the entire school.

CURRICULUM NEWS
BOOKLISTS
2017 Booklists were sent home last week. Please check with your child that they have received it. Once again Capricorn Educational Resources (CER) in Alexandra Street have offered to give a generous amount of money back to the school when Joey’s parents purchase their school supplies from them. Of course you are able to purchase your child’s supplies from wherever you wish, however, I have worked closely with the ladies from CER and they guarantee supply of the correct equipment.
Teachers put a significant amount of thought and time into developing the booklists, so I ask that you provide your child with all the equipment listed. If purchasing from CER you are welcome to drop your order into school before the end of Term or take it directly to CER.
PREMIERS READING CHALLENGE
Earlier in the year students were given the opportunity to participate in the Premiers Reading Challenge. St Joey’s has been selected as a winner in the 2016 Premier’s Reading Challenge lucky draw for schools. The school was presented with $20 vouchers from Booktopia who was a major sponsor of the challenge. Each child who completed the challenge and handed their forms on time to their teacher has received one of these vouchers. These vouchers were presented on assembly on Monday. Congratulations to:

CASSEROLE CLUB
We are in need of some frozen meals for our Casserole Club. These meals can be Stews/casseroles, mild curries, Spaghetti Bolognese, etc – whatever can be made, frozen, defrosted and heated.
We distribute these meals to families who are finding things a little tough from time to time. And as little as a frozen meal for dinner goes a long way. If you could help us out, please see Sue in the Tuckshop for some containers for the meals to go in. We do ask that you put the name of the meal and the date that it was cooked on the lid. Your help is greatly appreciated by all who receive.
Thank you
