APRE REFLECTION

This week we will be holding our Prep Orientation Day as we welcome a number of new students and families to our Joeys community. It is always wonderful to see new students that are keen to begin their educational journey, but it is also a time to reflect on the many great gifts that we as a community can offer to those seeking our Gospel values.

Well done to our Netball team who travelled all the way to Ipswich last weekend to compete in The Samsung Primary Schools Cup. This competition is a Netball Queensland initiative open to all primary school children in Years 4 – 6. The weekend provided an opportunity for students from all over Queensland to come together and experience competitive netball in a fun and safe environment.

The team had been training regularly over the past term in preparation. Well done to Mrs Tranberg & Miss Agius for training the girls as well as all of the parents and staff involved in fund raising for the trip. Also a big thank-you to Mr Barker and Mrs Brennan for being chauffeurs over the weekend and driving the bus. All had a good time.

On Thursday evening a number of our students will celebrate their Reconciliation/First Penance at Holy Family Church. Thursday night's celebration will be a culmination of a three-month journey that aims to strengthen our student's faith and remind them of the support they receive from God, their family and the Church as they continue their own life journey.

Well done to all the families who will be involved in Thursday night's celebration and thank you for letting me be a part of both your family's faith journey.

A Child's Reconciliation Prayer

Loving God
You are our friend always.
We are good people but sometimes we mess things up
and hurt one another.
We are sorry for the uncaring things we do.

Thank you for loving us all the time,
even when we hurt one another
and make one another unhappy.

Help us to be more caring and thoughtful towards one another.

Amen

I hope you have a great week.

RELIGIOUS MATTERS

No Prayer Assembly

Due to our first Children's Mass for Term 4 being held this weekend, there will be no class led prayer assembly in OLHC Church this Friday morning.

Term 4 Children's Mass

Our first Children's Mass for Term 4 with the Our Lady Help of Christians Parish will be held this Saturday evening the 22nd of October. It would be lovely to have as many of the Joey's community come along to celebrate. Hope to see you there.

Peer Support – 'Moving Forward - Resilience' 4th Session

This week in Peer Support children will revise what they have learned about resilience and discuss the people who show them support. Through a story the children identify where the character has used her personal qualities, strengths and skills to help her overcome challenges. They identify times when she needed support to continue. The children discuss a range of challenges and determine the best person to approach for support. The children consolidate the protective factors for resilience by revising their own strengths and skills and identifying 5 people they can go to for support.

Remind your child of their qualities and skills and encourage them to ask for help in challenging situations.

SPORTING MATTERS

SAVE THE DATE - 2016 Swimming Carnival

Our annual St Joseph's Park Avenue swimming carnival will be held on Wednesday, the 16th of November at the Southside Pool.

We have selected this date in the hopes of avoiding a date clash with the Rockhampton Christmas Parade.

The carnival will be held in the evening, commencing at 5:30pm sharp with the Prep races and finish at approximately 8:00pm. As it may be a late night for some of our younger students, age championship medallions will be presented in the MPA at 8:35am the following morning in front of the entire school.

DAY FOR DANIEL

Once again this year we will be inviting students to participate in the annual 'Day for Daniel'. 'Day for Daniel' is a National Day of Action to raise awareness about child safety and protection. Parents, carers and guardians are asked to start a conversation about personal safety in the real world and in an online environment.

Students are asked to wear a red shirt to school on Friday, 28th October with their normal sports uniform shorts. Students are also asked to bring a gold coin donation to go towards a special fundraising project associated with Day for Daniel for 2016.

Teachers will be talking to the students and completing activities as a way of remembering how to stay safe. Please reinforce the important messages of Recognise, React, Report with your children.

What does RECOGNISE, REACT and REPORT mean?

  • RECOGNISE encourages students to be aware of their surroundings and to recognise body clues in situations where they don't feel safe.
  • REACT helps students to consider choices that may keep them safe or help make them safe again as quickly as possible.
  • REPORT encourages students to report unsafe incidents to an adult.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week's skill comes under the heading of comprehension.

Strategy – Use Main Idea and Supporting Details to Determine Importance

Readers understand the most important idea about what is being read. This idea is often stated in a sentence in the passage, whereas other sentences comprise pieces of information that tell more about the most important idea. Identifying and understanding main ideas along with determining importance are prerequisite skills to summarising text. Readers summarise the most important aspects of the text by determining the details that are significant and discard those that are not while stating the main idea in their own words, thus improving comprehension and understanding what is read.

Spelling:

Activity: Upper and Lower Case

Write your spelling words two times each. The first time, write them in uppercase letters and the second time write them in lowercase letters.

CLASSROOM NEWS

PREP W

Here we are in our final term of Prep and what a fantastic year it has been. Although we have come so far from the beginning of the year, we aren't quite finished yet. We have one of our biggest terms ahead including our very first excursion, swimming program, Christmas activities and of course lots of learning still to do.

This term we will be going on our very first excursion to the Rockhampton FLOW Centre. We are extremely excited to be able to go and learn about our very own waterways and look at living specimens through microscopes. There are lost of interactive activities we will be participating in and stories shared with us that have been written by local authors.

In Religion this term, we are very excited to be learning about the Christmas Story. We have been discussing the events in which happened during the birth of Jesus and the special people in his lives. We have really enjoyed sequencing the events of the story and are beginning to develop a play area in our classroom where we can retell the story using dress ups.

Our Math's rotations have seen us doing lots of hands on activities in relation to 'Quantity' this term. We have been working together in small groups to discover different ways of showing numbers, numerals and quantities. We have also been working on simple addition and subtraction problems.

This term we have begun an Author Study on Eric Carle. Each week we are going to look at one of his books in detail and complete activities. So far we have read The Tiny Seed, Does a Kangaroo have a Mother Too? And The Very Busy Spider. We have learnt that Eric Carle is quite a special man as he is not only an Author but he also Illustrates his own books. We look forward to learning much more about this Author.

That is a quick snapshot of Term 4 for Prep W. We look forward to finishing of our year well.

SAMSUNG PRIMARY SCHOOLS CUP NETBALL

On Friday the Joey's Samsung Cup netball team travelled away to Ipswich to compete in the Samsung Primary Schools Cup. This year 110 teams from all over Queensland came together for this competition.

The Joeys team won 7 games out of the 9 games played. Finishing the weekend in first place of their finals pool and 41st overall.

The girls battled out tough games, played extremely well and demonstrated fantastic team spirit and sportsmanship. It was a very enjoyable experience for the girls who really improved as a team throughout the weekend.

A very big thank you goes out to Mr Barker and all of the parents who supported and helped out over the weekend and Trudy Agius for umpiring all of our games.

CASSEROLE CLUB

We are in need of some frozen meals for our Casserole Club. These meals can be Stews/casseroles, mild curries, Spaghetti Bolognese, etc – whatever can be made, frozen, defrosted and heated.

We distribute these meals to families who are finding things a little tough from time to time. And as little as a frozen meal for dinner goes a long way. If you could help us out, please see Sue in the Tuckshop for some containers for the meals to go in. We do ask that you put the name of the meal and the date that it was cooked on the lid. Your help is greatly appreciated by all who receive.

Thank you
