FROM THE PRINCIPAL

An important message from Bishop Michael:

On Sunday 4 September, Pope Francis will declare Mother Theresa of Calcutta a Saint. I invite you to celebrate this occasion in your parishes. That day, the Church will proclaim four new Saints – one of whom is this extraordinary Religious Sister who worked for most of her life in the slums of Calcutta caring for the poor.

On Sunday 4 September, I will be presiding at the 10 am Mass in St Joseph's Cathedral and I invite all members of our Diocesan family to join with me in celebrating Mother Theresa being declared a Saint of the Church.

Bishop Michael

Congratulations to our Junior C netballers who took out their grand final on Friday. Well done girls! Congratulations also to the 5A footballers who played well in their grand final, but were beaten 10-6.

A fantastic effort was put in by our 9/10 years footballers on Saturday night as they battled for the overall Capra's Cup title. The team was challenged to back up and play three finals in six days and in the end they were victorious over Taranganba, the Capricorn Coast winner, 26-12. Well done team on a successful season.

Season 2 sport, incorporating Netball, Hockey & Rugby League, can be quite intensive and poses additional time commitments on players and coaches. As this season has now come to an end I'd like to thank all of the teachers who willingly give many extra hours to try and bring out the best in all our players, whilst fostering a love for the game. Thank you!

The school Trivia Night is on this Friday, 2nd September. If you haven't sorted a table yet, it's not too late; pop in and speak to someone at the office. Hope to see you there!

Don't Forget …

* Fri 2/9 - Trivia Night.

Have a great week!

Alan

APRE REFLECTION

'God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.

This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus.'

John 4:16-18

A PREP FATHER'S DAY PRAYER

Let us pray,
Thank you Jesus,
for our fathers who love us,
for our grandfathers who cares for us,
and for God, your father and mine,
who made us and is always with us.
How lucky are we!
Amen.

Have a great week and for all Dads have a great Father's Day.

SPORTING MATTERS

Rugby League 5A Grand Final

Our Grade 5A Rugby League team capped off a fantastic season by taking part in the 5A Grand Final at Browne Park last Friday afternoon. Our Joey's team represented the school extremely well and played wonderfully. Our team was involved in the best game of the day with the scores still locked at 0-0 all at half time, Joeys eventually went down 10-6 to an undefeated Frenchville side.

Player of the final for St Joseph's was Bodene Phillips from Grade 5.

Well done to all the students involved.

CAPRAS Cup Rockhampton & District Final

After a narrow loss in the Grade 5A Division Grand Final on Friday, ten of our 5A team combined with four other St Joey's students backed up to play the Rockhampton & District Capras Cup Final open to 10-9 years students.

After defeating Frenchville 18-12 last week, we progressed to the district final that was played as the main curtain raiser to the Capras final home game of the season.

Our team played exceptionally well against a very large opposition running out winners 26-12 against Taranganba State School in Yeppoon.

Thanks to all the parents and students who put in a tremendous effort throughout the tournament and especially Mr Barker and his son Ethan for helping with the team.

Well done to the 14 students involved in winning such a prestigious competition.

Capras Cup 'Player of the Match' for St Joseph's was Gabby Yarrow from Grade 5.

Netball Grand finals

This year two of our Netball teams made it through to the grand finals.

The Senior B team battled it out in a tough game against St Peter's and were unfortunately defeated 14-9. The girls had a wonderful season only losing 2 games.

The Junior C team played St Peter's in a tight game and came out victorious, winning the grand final 15-8. This team has had a wonderful season and should be very proud of their efforts.

Thanks to all of the supporting students, parents and friends who came out to cheer on these teams on Friday, your support was greatly appreciated.

CURRICULUM NEWS

Book Week

As many of you are aware, last week we celebrated Book Week. We held two official events to help celebrate our love of reading – the character dress up parade and Joey's in Jamas. I would like to thank everyone who participated in these events. It was truly a fantastic way to celebrate reading.

Character Dress Up Parade

As part of our Book Week celebrations for 2016 we held our annual book character dress up day which always culminates with joining together as a school to 'show off' our costumes in our character dress up parade. Once again we had a large number of students as well as staff participate in this dress up day which shows the Joey's Spirit is alive and well.

Joey's in Jamas

The Book Week celebrations ended with our Joey's in Jamas night last Thursday evening. After talking to people who have been around Joeys for quite a while we ascertained that it has been 10 years since we last held a Joey's in Jamas night. It was a very successful night with a lot of families joining us to spend time reading, colouring in, completing puzzles and playing games together as a family. Many people commented on what a wonderful, relaxing night it was. I don't think I saw anyone who wasn't having a good time or smiling throughout the evening. I would like to thank Trudy Agius for all the work she put in to organising the event. I would also like to thank the staff members who came along to help out with serving tea, coffee, milo and biscuits, helping to supervise the library activities and helping to sell items from our Book Fair. Once again it was very clear that the Joey's Spirit is alive and well.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week's skill comes under the heading of comprehension.

Strategy – Use Text Features

Nonfiction texts contains common features such as titles, headings, subheadings, captions, maps, diagrams, charts, graphs, legends, bold and italicised text, glossaries and indexes. Readers recognise and use these features to help them understand what they are reading.

Spelling:

Activity: Words without consonants

Write your spelling words in a list but replace all the consonants with a line. Then go back to the beginning of your list and see if you can fill in the correct missing consonants.

The Extraordinary Adventures of 1M

We are buzzing around busy as little bees this term. We have been learning all about Zacchaeus how we can follow Jesus' example by being forgiving and being better friends. Ask us how we can be forgiving friends. We have taken time to look at the wonderful work of St Mary of the Cross Mackillop. We have drawn our portraits of her and talked about how we can be more like her - when we see something that needs to be done we just do it.

We are busy starting to write our stories with some amazing sizzling starts. Can't wait to show you our finished products. Our Art this terms has taken us on an adventure of colour, cutting, gluing and storytelling. We have many budding artists in the room.

We've just had our amazing book week where we read lots of different books and then last Thursday, we dressed up as the character from our favourite books. Check out our photos – we are truly amazing

Show and Share has changed format this term, where we now have a roster and particular themes for each week. This week we were very lucky to have Dominic demonstrate his sport of Jujitsu. Dominic's Dad came in to help Dominic demonstrate his moves. Thanks to all the Mum's and Dad's, grandparents, aunties and uncles, brothers and sisters who have helped Year 1M to gather their show and share stories.

SCHOOL COUNCILLOR

As a follow up from book week, it is timely to share some books that you may like to read, purchase or view for your little ones which address issues that many children experience. Reading to children has many benefits which include:

  • Create a good opportunity to foster a positive relationship with their parent/carer. Making time to read on a regular basis can allow a child predictable time with their carer. This can help reinforce a nurturing relationship between the parent and child.
  • Better communication skills can be nurtured. Going through a book and looking at pictures and asking open ended questions like, "what do you think will happen next?" or "what's your favourite part of the book" can help create further conversation the subject matter.
  • Reading a relevant story to ease life transitions is a great way to provide support to a child. A child who may be experiencing some worries about starting school, or feeling overwhelmed by different feelings can often be highlighted by reading a book which talks about these paralleling themes.

Here are 5 books which can be used as a starting point to discuss social or emotional themes to children:

  1. Bossy Bear by David Horvath: Bossy bear is a little bear who enjoys to boss his friends around until he realises that he has no one to play with. A simple story which can create further discussion around friendships and manners. –Aimed at younger children.
  2. The Grouchies by Debbie Waggenbach: A story about a young boy who learns how to handle his anger by focusing on positive thoughts. A special note to parents is written to generate conversation about the subject matter.
  3. My Many Coloured Days by Dr. Suess: Great little rhyming story which associates different colours to moods.
  4. When I'm feeling series by Trace Moroney: These series offer great information to little ones about their feelings, thoughts and experiences. A note to the parents is also provided in the back of the book to further extend learning and dialogue.
  5. Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Kimberly Kirberger: Written for the teenager in the home. Inspiring, uplifting short stories about friendships, school and life which promote values and positive well-being.

*All books can be purchased through online bookshops.
