FROM THE PRINCIPAL
While last weekend was a very busy one for many families with sporting grand finals and the like, it was wonderful to see the number of students and families who were able to attend last Saturday evening’s Children’s Mass. This is always a special celebration with parish and school and if you do not regularly attend this monthly celebration, I would encourage you to do so. This was our last Children’s Mass for this term, but there will be two more opportunities during Term 4.
Unfortunately, we have been notified that the Diocesan P&F meeting, which we were to host this evening Wednesday, 24th August, has been cancelled.
Congratulations to our 9/10 years league team who played in the Rockhampton division final of the Capra’s Cup on Monday afternoon. In what was a very tough, hard-fought match, in which the team was successful in defeating Frenchville State School 18-12. The Joeys team will now play the Capricorn Coast winner, Taranganba State School, this Saturday afternoon as a prelude to the last Capra’s home game for the season. The game will commence at 4.00pm at Browne Park and we would love to have your support to cheer on the team.
Also along the sporting theme, we have a number of our school teams playing in Netball and League grand finals this Friday and we wish them all the very best for their final games of the season.
Don’t forget that tomorrow; Thursday, 25th August we will have our Book Character Parade. So here’s a chance to dress up as your favourite character and have a bit of fun doing it. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s costumes.
The school Trivia Night is fast approaching and will take place on Friday week, 2nd September. This should be a really enjoyable evening, so why not get a table of 8-10 people together and come along. If you’d like to come and haven’t organised a table that’s no problem; pop in and speak to someone at the office. Hope to see you there!
Don’t Forget …
- Thu 25/8 - Book Character Parade;
- Fri 26/8 - Sporting Grand Finals;
- Fri 2/9 - Trivia Night.
Have a great week!
Alan
APRE REFLECTION
A PRAYER FOR THE PEACFUL SPIRIT OF THE OLYMPICS
Eternal God,
Giver of joy and source of all
strength,
we pray for those who prepared for the Rio Olympic and Paralympic
games.
For the competitors who have trained for the Games and their loved ones,
for the many thousands who have and will support them,
and for the Churches and others who are organising special events and who
continue to welcome many people from many nations.
In a world where many are rejected and abused, we pray for a spirit of care
and acceptance, of humility and respect
and for the health and safety of all.
May we at the last be led towards the love of Christ who is more than gold,
today and forever.
Amen
Best of luck to all of our Joey’s sporting teams during their Grand Finals this Friday. Have fun, play hard and enjoy yourself.
Have a great week.
Regards

Joeys in Jamas Evening |
Joeys in Jamas
This year sees the revival of the Joey’s in Jamas evening. The purpose of this evening is to provide an opportunity for parents and children to share stories together. The event will be held in the school library from 6pm until 8pm during Book Week on Thursday, 25th August. Children and parents who come along are asked to come in their pyjamas to celebrate a night of stories and their love of reading. It is not an expectation that you stay for the whole 2 hours, it is more a case that the library will be opened between 6pm and 8pm where people can come and go anytime during that time period. It is a requirement that all students attending have an adult with them whom they can share stories and conversations with. Tea, Coffee, Milo and biscuits will be on offer as a light supper.
Book Week Character Parade
Once again during Book Week we will be having our annual character dress up parade. Students are invited to dress up as a character from a book. The parade will be held in the multi-purpose area on Thursday, 25th August from approximately 10:30am.
LITERACY CORNER
Reading:
Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of fluency.
Strategy – Use Punctuation to Enhance Phrasing and Prosody
Clustering words together by using our knowledge of the spoken patterns in the English language and using punctuation enhances our understanding of what we read. Learning to read in phrases is important. The meaning of what is read is embedded in the chunk of words we read, not just in the isolated words themselves. The order and the way words are put together to make a sentence and then a paragraph create the meaning. It is important for readers to practice reading fluently in phrases.
Spelling:
Activity: Words within words
Write each spelling word and then write at least two words made from the same letters. For example: slide, side, lie, lid, led

CLASSROOM NEWS
PM
Prep M have been very busy this term learning whilst we play. Students have been very interested to learn about the work of Australia’s First Saint, Mary MacKillop. Feeling very thankful for all her dedication and hard work, we created special portraits of her to display in our classroom. They help to remind us to be good shepherds in this The Year of Mercy.
Students are also learning all about the weather and how it impacts on what we do and the clothes we wear. We have set up “The Prep M News Desk” and students are busy reporting on weather and classroom happenings as they break.
Students are also enjoying jumping into the land of Fairy Tales. We read that Jack successfully chopped down the Beanstalk, we’ve chased the Gingerbread Man, and watched as Little Red Riding Hood overcame the big bad wolf to save her Granny. Now we are embarking on discovering the best materials to use to build a house to protect The 3 Little Pigs. Will it be straw, sticks or bricks?
All through all this fabulous, fun learning, Prep M has been busy practicing for their Father’s Day Assembly coming up on Friday the 2nd of September. Can’t wait to see you there!
