APRE REFLECTION

With the celebrations of both Harmony Day and Catholic Education Week taking place last week and Friday’s beautiful rendition of the 2016 Catholic Education Week song being performed by Grade 1N and the School Choir, I was reminded of this lovely prayer that I was given by a Parishioner a couple of weeks ago. The prayer was printed on a card celebrating 50 years of Priesthood for Fr. Noel Milner.

Even though we had met beforehand, I really remember the impact Fr. Noel had on me during my time attending St. Brendan’s in Yeppoon. So much was his positive influence on myself that I have invited him to speak to the Joey’s staff on numerous occasions and attended many of his Bishop’s In-service day workshops. Fr. Noel is truly a person who spreads God’s love and message of peace to all who he meets.

Congratulations to Fr. Noel on an immense achievement in what you have given to Catholic Schools, Catholic Parishes and the Priesthood. With St Mary of the Cross MacKillop’s Feast Day this week in which she too promotes Peace in the communities in which she visited, I thought this was a lovely prayer.

‘Come ring out our joy to the Lord’ Psalm 95/1

Peace Prayer

Lord make me an Instrument of Your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope,
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that
I may not so much seek
to be consoled, as to console:
To be understood, as to understand.
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen

Have a great week.

RELIGIOUS MATTERS

No Prayer Assembly in Week 4

Due to our whole school mass celebrating the Feast Day of Australia’s first Saint, Mary of the Cross MacKillop, we will not be holding a prayer assembly in OLHC this Friday morning. Our next prayer assembly will be presented by 3T on Friday the 12th of August in Week 5.

Week 4 – St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Feast Day Mass

We will be celebrating a whole school mass for the Feast Day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop this Friday morning in OLHC Church at 9:00am. St Mary’s call to follow Jesus’ Gospel message and ‘never seeing a need without doing something about it’ was instrumental in the establishment of catholic education throughout rural Australia.

All are welcome to come along and attend this celebration of St Mary’s contribution to our Joey’s community.

Children’s Mass – Save the Date

Thank you to all who came along and celebrated our Children’s Mass last Saturday evening. It was wonderful to have a chat with people from both our school and parish communities after the mass. With this time of year being extremely busy for all families I thought you may wish to circle Saturday the 20th of August at 6:00pm in OLHC Church as the date of our next Children’s Mass in Term 3.

Hope to see you there.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of comprehension.

Strategy – Predict what will happen; Use text to confirm

To predict, readers tell what they think will happen in the story; to confirm, readers find out whether their predictions were true, partially true or way off. Using this strategy helps readers make connections to the text, think ahead and become more engaged.

Spelling:

Activity: Pass a Word

Pass or roll a ball back and forth with a partner. You say the 1st letter of the word and then pass the ball, your partner says the 2nd letter and so on.

CLASSROOM NEWS

Yr 5

What’s happening in Year 5 this term?

We are off to a busy start this term in year 5. Here’s a quick snapshot into what we will be covering this term.

In HAAS we are studying how Australia has changed over time through immigration and significant events throughout our history such as colonization, the gold rush, and wars and how these events have made Australia what it is today.

In Science, we are studying Properties of matter. The students will be investigating elements of physical and chemical changes of liquids, solids and gases through hands on experiments.

In Religion, we are learning about Mary the mother of Jesus and exploring her influence on Jesus’ life and what it might have been like to be Jesus’ mother.

Our Arts unit this term we are looking at images and film and how they are portrayed to an audience for a particular purpose. The students will create digital sequences using different camera angles to focus on characters relationships, power or mood. They will design and create animated sequences that personify objects and consider viewpoints of artworks.

Parents make sure you get your child to show you our class webpage regularly to see the work we are covering each week and what assessments are coming up.

Thanks,
Year 5
