APRE REFLECTION
Welcome to Week 3 of the Term with a few ‘Big Ticket’ items on the agenda. This week we have a busy one with many 2017 Prep interviews still taking place. This seems quite fitting as we bring new prospective families in to see our lovely school as we celebrate Catholic Education Week.
As a part of Catholic Education Week we will be celebrating Harmony Day this Thursday with many presenters and past students coming to Joeys and reinforcing the wonderful culture and tradition that our indigenous people have and are willing to celebrate and share with the community.
What a big and exciting week for our school to showcase our school values of SELF WORTH, MUTUAL ACCEPTANCE & PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for all to see.
This is truly a wonderful community to be a part of.
Harmony Day Prayer
O God,
You create all people in your image.
We thank you for the astonishing variety
of races and cultures in this world.
Enrich our lives by ever widening circles of friendship
and show us your presence
in those who differ most from us,
until our knowledge of your love is made perfect
in our love for all your children;
Through your son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
Have a great week.

RELIGIOUS MATTERS
Prayer Assembly
1N will be leading us in Prayer this Friday at 11:40am, However due to a funeral being held in Our Lady Help of Christians Church, the assembly will now be held in the St Joseph’s MPA instead. The Year One class will be focusing on Catholic Education Week, and important role that a faith enriched, catholic education has in the lives of our students.
All are welcome to attend.
Hope to see you there.
Catholic Education Week Mass
Thanks to all the staff, students and their families who attended last Saturday evenings Catholic Education Week Mass at St Joseph’s Cathedral.
It was wonderful to see representatives from so many of our schools coming together to celebrate the significant role that Catholic Education plays in our church community.

SPORTING MATTERS
JUNIOR TOUCH SEASON 2016
The Rockhampton Junior Touch Football Competition 2016 season commences on Saturday 20th August at the Cyril Connell Fields, North Rockhampton. The season runs to Saturday 19th November 2016 with breaks for school holidays.
The entire cost for the season is $60 per player with the third family member free. There is no extra to pay and the school will provide a playing shirt, which is to be returned to the team coach at the end of the season. We rely on parent volunteers to coach our teams.
Each team must have an adult coach or manager. If there are insufficient coaches - teams will not be nominated. St Joseph’s has traditionally had a strong representation in this sport and hopefully with your support, this year will be no exception. Please consider helping out, even if you are new to the sport, there is a lot of help available for coaches.
Coaches and Managers need to have a current Blue Card, if you are not the holder of a Blue Card the school office will be able to assist with this.
If you have any queries please see Kerrie Tennyson at St Joseph’s.
Nomination forms will be coming home today (Wednesday 20-7-16) and are to be returned by Monday 1st August.
St Joseph’s Annual Harmony Day - Thursday 28th July
Once again our Annual Harmony day is on; this day is all about celebrating, recognizing and increasing awareness of Indigenous culture. Our day begins with a morning liturgy presented by our Indigenous students at 9am in the St Joseph’s MPA (due to a funeral being held in the church this Thursday).
Throughout the morning all classes will attend sessions by a variety of guest speakers and local community organizations. The school will provide each student with a sausage on bread for first break but we would still encourage our students to bring along their own lunch and afternoon tea.
During the second session our students will watch some traditional dance performed by Emmaus College students.
Just a reminder that there will be no tuck-shop available on the day. If possible parents and friends are encouraged to come along and help celebrate.

LIFE EDUCATION VAN
Over the last couple of weeks all classes had the opportunity to visit the Life Education Van for a session related to what they are currently studying in Health lessons. Liz Hills from Life Education approached me at the end of the sessions and told me how impressed she was with the attitude, behaviour and willingness of our students to participate in the sessions. I thank the students for their behaviour whilst in the van and congratulate them on making such a good impression on a visitor to our school.
LITERACY CORNER
Reading:
Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of accuracy.
Strategy – Flip the Sound
Children use their knowledge of letter sounds to decode words by trying out or ‘flipping’ the different sounds a letter can make until they hear a word they recognise. For example, the letter ‘a’ can make a long a sound or a short a sound. Students can flip between both sounds to help them decode words.
Spelling:
Activity: Syllables
Write out your spelling words but put spaces in between the letters that break up the syllables. For example, el e phant. Students should recognise that each syllable contains a vowel.

CLASSROOM NEWS
2H
We are now well into the swing of term three and it’s going to be a big term for us. Our prayer assembly last Friday was a momentous occasion and we all spoke so well. Thank you to Ms Lavender for her help in practising our reading of our lines and to our parents and carers for helping us learn our parts at home and for also coming to see us. We were proud to share our enthusiasm for caring and respecting God’s creation with the school. As a class we have made a decision to take more time in our busy lives to appreciate, care for and protect our planet and all God put on it for us.
Last Thursday we went to the Pilbeam Theatre to see Emmaus’ production of Peter Pan. It was amazing and even more uplifting to even see some past Joey’s students up on stage with pride. Upon returning to school many of us changed our future life ambitions to include singer, actor or stage director.
Make sure to check in with us for our next article at the end of the term. We have loads of learning, fun activities and exploring to do over the next 7 weeks. We look forward to sharing it with you then.

CHOIR NEWS
As we celebrate Catholic Education Week for 2016 we thought we’d share some of the amazing things our choir has done this year. It was decided that during this Year of Mercy the St Joseph’s Choir wouldn’t attend Eisteddfod but reach out to the elderly in our community to share our talents and to share our time with some people who at times don’t get to have many conversations.
And so with this in mind we have visited our local aged care facility Leinster Place. We have been there twice now and both times both residents and students have come away with beaming smiles and an awe that a simple hello can brighten up someone’s day.
We performed a number of modern (sneaky Jesus) songs that had a message of love. We sang a couple of songs by The Seekers and then some of our songs we sing during our prayer assemblies. Our audience fell in love with the singing and then with the students after they engaged them in conversation.
The students were exemplary with their behaviour and did us proud as students of St Joseph’s PA. We have been asked to keep coming back.
Please enjoy the photos as much as we enjoyed making the memories.
LOST PROPERTY
At the end of last term and last week, a large amount of lost property has accumulated. If your child or children has misplaced their shirt, shorts, shoes, socks, jumpers, lunch boxes or water bottles, this is where they will be. Lost property is located at the back door of the office.
Please name ALL of your child’s belongings, so when it is “misplaced’, it will be easier to return to them.
VOLUNTEERS INDUCTION SESSIONS
WPH&S Volunteers Inductions are necessary for the safety of your children. Therefore we ask that all parents who generously volunteer their time to the school, either in a classroom or in the tuckshop, attend a very brief induction regarding maintaining a safe environment for the children of St. Joseph’s.
These sessions only take about five minutes and are available after assembly on a Monday morning with Deanne Senini, or with Ray Carrington on Thursday afternoons from 1:30pm - 3:30pm. Tracy Wren will also be conducting induction sessions in the tuckshop, if you are helping out in there.
Thanks,
Ray Carrington
