APRE REFLECTION

Welcome back to Term 3. During the week I was sent a lovely email from Mr. Kevin Hogan our Parish Manager. In the email Kevin passed on the blessings of a happy birthday to our school reminding me that the school has just turned 87 years old. Every week I am reminded of the vast physical changes that our school has undertaken over the last few years as many of our OLHC parishioners ask if they can have a guided tour of the school before or after mass.

Even though our school has experienced many outward changes and the curriculum has evolved to meet our modern day demands with the uses of technology, there are sure to be a few things that have not changed over the last 87 years. Some of the things that I am sure have not changed is that St Joseph’s Park Avenue Catholic School continues to be committed to providing a relevant and faith nourishing education for our students and although too many to list individually, there is a great width and depth to the many contributing factors of the catholic nature of our school. One of the great characteristics of our school is the generosity of the community and their ability to support those in need. Whether this is regularly supporting St Vincent DePaul, Project Compassion, or just supporting those in need within our own community, the catholic character of St Joseph’s Park Avenue is ingrained within the community of staff, parents and students for all to see over the last 87 years.

We all need to grow and change with the times, but it is important to remember and appreciate the things that we preserve and keep the same that make our school community so great.

A Prayer for St. Joseph’s Catholic School Park Avenue

Lord Jesus,

Bless St Joseph’s Park Avenue school, which we have built
for the education of our young people.
Bless St Joseph’s students and teachers,
our parents, board members, P&F association, staff members,
and all who promote catholic education in our community.

May our youth grow in self-worth, mutual acceptance, and personal responsibility before You and all Your people.
May this school always be a home of truth and wisdom,
of faith and good will toward all.
Through the prayers of St. Joseph, Our Lady Help of Christians & Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, may this school help our community,
and build Your kingdom of justice, light, and peace.

Amen

Have a great week.

SPORTING MATTERS

ST JOSEPH’S PARK AVENUE CHALLENGE CUP 2016

Congratulations to both the Challenge Cup Netball and Rugby League teams that competed at a very rainy St Brendan’s College Yeppoon last week. Both teams performed very well with the Netballers coming 3rd after winning their pool and the Rugby League team also coming 3rd winning all of their pool games for a fifth year in a row. The students represented the school wonderfully and played with determination and sportsmanship.

St Patrick’s Emerald, being one of the largest schools in our Diocese, won both the Netball and Rugby League competitions and took out the overall Challenge Cup. The greatest accomplishment over the three days for St Joseph’s Park Avenue was the fact that Joeys ranked second overall in the Diocese out of 29 schools with both the combined 3rd place results in the football and netball. This for a school with just under 350 students is a truly mammoth achievement.

Well done again to all the players and coaches who trained and prepared for the event over many weeks. Thank-you to all of the parents who gave up their time over the three days to come down and support our school at such a wonderful event for Catholic Education. A wet, yet wonderful time was had by all.

JUNIOR TOUCH SEASON 2016

The Rockhampton Junior Touch Football Competition 2016 season commences on Saturday 20th August at the Cyril Connell Fields, North Rockhampton. The season runs to Saturday 19th November 2016 with breaks for school holidays.

The entire cost for the season is $60 per player with the third family member free. There is no extra to pay and the school will provide a playing shirt, which is to be returned to the team coach at the end of the season. We rely on parent volunteers t o coach our teams.

Each team must have an adult coach or manager. If there are insufficient coaches - teams will not be nominated. St Joseph’s has traditionally had a strong representation in this sport and hopefully with your support, this year will be no exception. Please consider helping out, even if you are new to the sport, there is a lot of help available for coaches.

Coaches and Managers need to have a current Blue Card, if you are not the holder of a Blue Card the school office will be able to assist with this.

If you have any queries please see Kerrie Tennyson at St Joseph’s.

Nomination forms will be coming home today (Wednesday 20-7-16) and are to be returned by Monday 1st August.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of comprehension.

Strategy – Ask Questions throughout the Reading Process

Readers are actively involved in reading by asking themselves questions before, during and after reading thus increasing their comprehension of the text. Readers who ask questions during reading are actively engaged and thus tend to remember important details and information. While asking questions, readers are monitoring their comprehension.

Spelling:

Activity: Stick Words
Form your words using paddle pop sticks, toothpicks or pipe cleaners

CLASSROOM NEWS

3A

Before the holidays, the children wrote a poem about space. Last week the children took great pleasure in memorising, rehearsing and presenting their poems to the class. Check them out!

Talking Planets and Astronauts

I think I saw a talking planet?

And I saw an astronaut.

Then I saw a spacemaggot

And then I had an astrothought.

“Ha ha ha” said a voice.

Anyway it doesn’t bother me.

No wait it’s Mr. Joice.

Oh no now I can’t see.

Bang! Help we’re spinning.

Our ship is losing.

Wait and now we’re winning.

We won with some bruising.

Oh no let’s run.

Our ship is gonna blow!

Quick save the bun.

Now we’ve got to go.

By Oscar

The Fight on Mars

I was about to go to space.

In my brand new spaceship.

I was flying to my base.

The ship started flipping then took a dip.

I finally landed on Mars.

I could see something in sight.

I saw an ALIEN around some stars. The alien saw me and wanted a fight.

Instead of fighting each other.

I thought of a race.

The alien took cover.

But I took the chase.

I won the race.

The alien started to chase.

But I locked my base.

And the alien locked himself in a case.

By Joshua

The Big Spaceship

I got into my spaceship.

And I travelled far.

Then my spaceship started to flip.

Then the spaceship started to fall on a star.

I can see the hot sun.

We are going to crash into the moon. We are going to crash into the sun.

The spaceship crashed into a star.

People saw me hit a bird.

Into the moon and the sun.

They gave me food and water.

My friend found me and we went back to the moon.

By Laria

Space

I got into my spaceship.

And I travelled far.

Then my spaceship started to drip.

The spaceship had a surprise inside, a car!

The spaceship was lost in space.

The space savers are coming.

The space savers made a base.

The space savers found the spaceship.

The space savers saved the day.

The space savers told the spaceship pilot to go back to earth.

They went to earth.

They were safe.

By Antwan

I Love Space!!

When I fly off into space.

I see lots of meteorites.

Ah look there’s more food I think I have space.

I’m a little hungry I think I’ll have some bites.

When I’m finished my eats.

I’ll get quite bored.

I think I’ll put on some music and dance to the beats.

Now I’m still bored.

When I’m finished dancing.

I get quite tired.

I think I’ll do some prancing.

Wow I’m very, very tired!

I’ll eat some donuts.

Mmmm yum.

Anyway I’m allergic to nuts.

Wow! this is so yum.

I Saw an Alien

I saw an alien.

On the moon.

Its name is Lien.

It looks like a baboon.

I saw an alien.

On venus.

Its name is lein.

It looks like a benus.

I saw an alien.

On Plurlo.

Its name is Lien.

It looks like a hero.

I saw an alien.

On the sun.

Its name is Lien.

With his son on the moon.

Going Into space

I got into my space ship.

And I travelled far.

Hope it doesn’t flip.

Hope there is no car.

Hope I don’t run out of fuel.

Hope I don’t crash.

It’s pretty cool.

I hope it doesn’t flash.

By Mia

Space Aliens

I want to go up to space.

I heard it is full of planets.

I hope to find a case.

I hope the aliens aren’t full of manners.

They live on a planet called Drool.

They are so dumb.

I hope they have a pool.

I hope they don’t have a funny looking thumb.

By Mikaela

Spaceship

I got into my spaceship.

And I travelled far.

I hope it doesn’t drip.

Hold on to the bar.

I can see the moon.

The moon is so cool.

I will listen to a tune.

I hope I don’t drool.

I feel like a tool.

What if it turns right.

I might even be a fool.

Are you going to the moon? I might.

By Sydney

Space Adventure

I wish I could fly.

Onto the moon.

In that sky.

I hope to soon.

Out to space.

I’ll shout I CAN FLY.

In that place.

I’ll be so happy to fly.

I would zoom up.

To the sky.

I’d take my pup.

Flying high.

But he’s too shy.

I’d love to fly.

In that sky.

Life would be very at ease.

I hate space that’s a lie.

All the people will be pleased.

The Black Hole

In a Black hole there is a mole.

It has lots of shoes.

It also has coal.

The black hole is in space

and it has tens

The hole has a face

and don’t forget your pens.

By Cooper

The Moon

On the Moon.

There are lots of rats.

And lots of doon.

And also lots of bats.

I don’t know how they survive

like a cow.

On the planet Pow.

They may as well take a dive.

I don’t know why they would take a dive. Maybe because they’re dirty.

Why would a bat take a waterslide.

To its cave, that is dirty.

By Riley

The Mystery Spaceship

I was flying in my ship.

I was going to jump out.

I just remembered I forgot to eat my chip.

I walked over I felt something.

I fell over and bit my lip.

I found my belt.

I put my belt on my hip.

My spaceship started to melt.

My spaceship started to drip.

My belt started to melt.

And so did my hip.

Even the moon started to melt.

The Rocket

The Rocket blasted off into space.

At the back there was a huge fire.

There was a huge space race.

There we found a huge wire.

We kept going but we were heading for the sun.

It was getting very hot.

We had to run.

And the wood in the space ship was starting to rot.

Then the wood caught on fire.

Then I saw a bun.

I caught a glimpse of a wire.

I had to stop the fire.

I had a whole lot of fun.

By Callan

The Space Rocket

I went to my Space Rocket.

I went to get some tea.

Oh no! It ripped my best pocket.

When I was starting to drink I saw a bee.

I went out of the space ship.

I went out of the door.

I went to Mars I saw the ship flip.

And I got my pocket.

I came back from Mars.

I got favourite pocket.

But I brought back too many bars.

I love my old rocket.

By Ayla

The Planet Zoon

I search for the Planet Zoon.

But there is no sight of it.

Planet Zoon is near the Moon.

People there like to knit.

I finally found it.

Also a friend called Doom.

And I saw people knit.

But Doom liked to Zoom.

So I went to zoom.

I also knit a jumper.

I followed Doom.

And saw a Dumper.

I went back to Planet Zoon.

But I got stuck.

I was near the Moon.

Now I’m in a muck.

I was in sticky goo.

I called for Doom.

The goo started turning blue.

Then Doom went to zoom.

Finally he found me.

He started pulling.

I also had a cup of tea.

Then some Aliens started bullying.

There is a black hole.

The black hole is up in space.

How Earth, Sun and Moon Became Fat.

Bang! What was that?

Earth come over here.

Sun it was you getting fat.

And by the way I’m drinking beer.

Bang! what was that?

Earth you’re in trouble now.

Because you’re getting fat.

And I don’t care how.

Moon is getting fat now.

Don’t ask me why.

No one cares how.

Go ask a fly.

Mars says no one cares why you are fat.

As you can see I’ll whack you with a bat.

And don’t say no to me.

Sky, Space and Jokes

Moon, Earth and Sun are all in the middle of space.

When I figured that out I made a joke.

I thought of a super alien race.

Until someone gave me a poke.

It was my big sister Drum.

She’s some how drunk.

She’s a little dumb

and she’s a little space punk

I turned around and I poked her back.

An alien appeared and I called the exterminator.

The exterminator pulled out a dirty old sack.

He was famous that space terminator

His name was Jack.

Onto mars the ship fluttered.

Lets hope I don’t drip.

I think space has a dome around Mars.

Oh no there is something wrong with the ship.

I think I can see the stars.

I think the ship is starting to dip.

We were going to fix the ship.

I hope isn’t wet.

I think we should find a clip.

Before we leave on our jet.

The Alien on the Moon

I read a book last night.

It was all about an alien.

It got a bit scary. I got a fright.

My favourite alien was Nailen.

In my dream I got a rocket.

And I blasted off into space.

Then I felt something weird in my pocket.

On the moon I found an alien with some lace.

I thought he was going to wrap me up.

But he wasn’t, he was a nice alien.

He even had a cool alien pup.

The pup’s name was Lalien.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK MASS – SATURDAY, JULY 23RD

To mark the commencement of Catholic Education Week, there will be a special Mass for all Rockhampton Catholic Schools held in St Joseph’s Cathedral on Saturday the 23rd of July.

The Mass will commence at 6.00pm and each school in our Diocese is asked to have representation from both the Staff and Student Body in order to mark the occasion.

Our attendance as a school community at this Mass is recognition of the invaluable contribution of Catholic Education in both our Diocese and the St. Joseph’s Park Avenue community.

This particular mass does tend to run a little longer than a regular weekend mass and in the past it has tended to run for approximately and hour and a half. A light supper consisting of pizza and a sausage sizzle will be on offer in the Cathedral Close after mass.

Parents are more than welcome to attend and it would be lovely if we could all sit together as a school community, however it would be preferable that students attending the Mass be dressed in their formal school uniform.

Hope to see you there

ST JOSEPH’S ANNUAL HARMONY DAY - THURSDAY 28TH JULY

Once again our Annual Harmony day is on; this day is all about celebrating, recognizing and increasing awareness of Indigenous culture. Our day begins with a morning liturgy presented by our Indigenous students in the church at 9am. Throughout the morning all classes will attend sessions by a variety of guest speakers and local community organizations. The school will provide each student with a sausage on bread for first break but we would still encourage our students to bring along their own lunch and afternoon tea.

During the second session our students will watch some traditional dance performed by Emmaus College students.

Just a reminder that there will be no tuck-shop available on the day.

If possible parents and friends are encouraged to come along and help celebrate.

LOST PROPERTY

At the end of last term and last week, a large amount of lost property has accumulated. If your child or children has misplaced their shirt, shorts, shoes, socks, jumpers, lunch boxes or water bottles, this is where they will be. Lost property is located at the back door of the office.

Please name ALL of your child’s belongings, so when it is “misplaced’, it will be easier to return to them.

WPH&S Volunteers Inductions are necessary for the safety of your children. Therefore we ask that all parents who generously volunteer their time to the school, either in a classroom or in the tuckshop, attend a very brief induction regarding maintaining a safe environment for the children of St. Joseph’s.

These sessions only take about five minutes and are available after assembly on a Monday morning with Deanne Senini, or with Ray Carrington on Thursday afternoons from 1:30pm - 3:30pm. Tracy Wren will also be conducting induction sessions in the tuckshop, if you are helping out in there.
