FROM THE PRINCIPAL

This weekend a number of our students will be receiving the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist and we welcome Bishop Michael McCarthy who will be conferring these sacraments. I would like to congratulate these students, and their families, for making the commitment to take the next steps in their faith journey, through the preparation, acceptance and ongoing practice of these sacraments. These are certainly important steps in taking their place in the wider Catholic community. If you would like to come along and support these students, Mass will commence at 6.00pm in our parish church.

My sincere thanks to all of the parents and staff who had a hand in the preparation and running of our school athletics carnival last week. It was wonderful to see parents able to attend and cheer on the children and equally pleasing to witness the behaviour of the children and the great way in which they all participated. A special thank you and congratulations to Mr Bernard Fitzgerald for his organisation of the carnival and all of the 'behind-the-scenes' work to make the carnival a success.

As the term draws to a close with only a week and a half to go, I would like to draw your attention to a couple of important points. Firstly, we have a significant amount of outstanding school fees. Without payment of these fees, it is becoming increasing difficult to adequately resource the school as we would like and so I would ask that you give this matter your urgent attention. Furthermore, if you are having legitimate problems meeting these commitments I would encourage you to make an appointment to see me, prior to the end of term, so we can look at a way forward.

Failure to meet the financial commitment of school fees has a detrimental effect on the teaching and learning of all students.

I would also draw your attention to the fact that enrolment applications for Prep 2017 close at the end of this term. If you are yet to lodge your application, or know of a friend yet to do so, please call into the office and collect the paperwork.

No school tomorrow – Rockhampton Show Holiday

Don't forget….

  • Wed 15/6 - School Board Meeting;
  • Thu 16/6 - Rockhampton Show Holiday;
  • Sat 18/6 - Confirmation/Eucharist;
  • Fri 24/6 - Last day of Term 2.

Have a great week!

Alan

APRE REFLECTION

A Prayer for Guidance in Helping Those Around Us

Lord Jesus,
Some people in our world are hungry for food. They don't have enough to eat.
Open our hands, God. Help us to share what we have with others.
Some people in our world are hungry for care. They are sad or lonely. They need comfort and support.
Open our eyes, God. Help us to see the needs of those around us.
Some people in our world are hungry for friendship. They are excluded because others think they are "different" in some way.
Open our hearts, God. Help us to share your love with others.
Together, make a commitment to bring the love of Jesus to all who are in need.
Amen

Have a great week.

Bernard Fitzgerald

RELIGIOUS MATTERS

Prayer Assembly

4H will be leading us in Prayer this Friday at 11:40am in Our Lady Help of Christians Church. Year 4 have been learning about the Sacraments of the Catholic Church and in particular the Sacrament of Eucharist. This coincides with our students who are currently participating in the Confirmation & First Eucharist Sacraments that will be celebrated this weekend in OLHC Church. The Grade 4's will be exploring why the Eucharist is central to our ongoing Catholic Faith.

All are welcome to attend.

Hope to see you there.

Confirmation/Eucharist Sacramental Program

Just a friendly reminder that our celebration for Confirmation & First Eucharist will be celebrated with Bishop Michael & Father Don this Saturday evening at 6:00pm in OLHC Church. Practice for the celebration will be held in OLHC Church on Friday afternoon at 3:30pm. It is advisable that both the child and their sponsor attend. If the child's sponsor is unable to attend then another adult will need to attend in order to relay all of the relevant organisational information ahead of the celebration.

HASS

The introduction of the Australian Curriculum has brought with it many changes to the subjects taught at school. One of these recent changes is to do with the subjects of History and Geography. Previously these have been stand-alone subjects. They are still separate subjects however they have been joined with the new subjects of Civics and Citizenship (years 3-6) and Economics and Business (years 5 and 6) in a combined Learning Area called Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS). On this semester's report card you will see the learning area of HASS which will consist of a combined mark for History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship (years 3-6) and Economics and Business (years 5 and 6).

LITERACY CORNER

Reading

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week's skill comes under the heading of fluency.

Strategy – Adjust and Apply Different Reading Rates to Match Text
Readers use a constant rate for most texts they read but learn to use different speeds based on the types of tasks and their purpose for reading. Some readers have yet to learn how to adjust their reading rate to match their purpose for reading. Because these readers read everything at the same rate, they struggle to complete and comprehend lengthy readings.

Spelling

Strategy: Spell-er-size
Spell your words as you do jumping jacks. For each letter do one jumping jack. Then do one last jumping jack as you say the whole word you just spelled.

Deanne Senini
